Background / History
Itachi was a gifted but initially naïve Uchiha who believed in peaceful resolution and village leadership. During the escalating conflict between Konoha and the Uchiha clan, he became Shisui Uchiha’s friend and shared his desire to prevent a coup. Shisui’s betrayal and death led Itachi to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. 43
He became a double agent, attempting to protect both Konoha and his clan. When village leadership ordered the Uchiha’s extermination to preserve peace, Itachi complied. He spared Sasuke, presenting himself as a power-hungry killer and directing his younger brother to pursue hatred and strength. 32 43
Although he publicly claimed to seek Sasuke’s eyes and eternal light, Itachi’s underlying concern for Sasuke persisted. While traveling with Kisame, he secretly returned near Konoha because he was worried about Sasuke’s safety and wished to warn the village leadership against acting rashly. 151
Personality
Itachi is controlled, rational, and exceptionally skilled, but Kakashi recalls that he struggled to communicate with others. 34 He can maintain an unreadable expression even while deceiving Kisame, yet his composure breaks when confronted by a parallel-world Sasuke and evidence of his brother’s future family. 151
His defining trait is self-sacrifice taken to a destructive extreme. He tried to shoulder the village-clan conflict alone, massacred his clan under orders, and shaped Sasuke through cruelty rather than trust. Even after surviving Sasuke’s challenge, he considers death necessary atonement for his actions. 32 194 335
