Excited Robert

Robert gripped a hand that still held warmth, and suddenly, he felt like crying; it had truly been too difficult.

He had lived alone in this deserted city for three years!

While climbing over piles of debris, he started a conversation: "Li Wei, where are you from? I don't mean your hometown, but how did you get here after the disaster broke out?"

He had been trapped in this place of sorrow for so long, and now that he had met Li Wei, he naturally wanted to know more.

"I used to think there was no one left in the world, but seeing you now proves that there are still survivors! So, have you encountered any others?"

The two walked at a slow pace while Li Wei thought about how to answer this question in his mind.

Should he say he was an alien from another world?

Better not; it would be too troublesome to explain, and there was no need for such a complicated explanation here. 95% of the world was gone, so he could just make something up and no one would be able to verify it!

"I was working here in Manhattan before, but when the disaster hit, I went to Yellowstone National Park. After living there for a while, I went to a small town, lived there for a bit, and then came back here. I did encounter some survivors during that time."

Hearing that there were actually other survivors, Robert's expression became even more excited. From thinking he was the only one left in the world to knowing there was a small group, the news was very encouraging.

"Oh! Really? What about the survivors you met? Didn't they come with you?"

Robert immediately asked with excitement, stumbling as he walked because he wasn't watching his footing.

"Watch your step," Li Wei reminded the overly excited Robert before continuing his fabrication: "They are still staying in that small town and don't want to leave. I came back here because I'm planning to head further north."

Robert continued walking, curious as to why Li Wei wanted to head north. "What's in the north?"

"I don't know what's there, but the body temperature of the Darkseekers is always on the high side. Without insulation, they become sluggish in the north. Haven't you noticed this trait during the winter?"

Darkseekers feared the cold; this was a reasonable deduction Li Wei had made after assimilating and absorbing them.

Robert opened his mouth, then shook his head and said, "I haven't observed them closely. Every day at 16:00, I return home, where it's safe."

Although he had been researching the Darkseekers, he had never carefully observed their reactions in winter because he never dared to step out of his house at night; those crazed creatures would tear apart any living thing they saw.

Devoted to developing a vaccine, Robert wouldn't risk his life, at most setting traps during the day to catch a Darkseeker to bring home for study.

So, he really didn't know that Darkseekers feared the cold!

As they spoke, they reached the intersection where the tank was located.

Robert pointed to the crater that had almost tripped him and warned, "Oh! There's a hole here. I almost tripped over it just now, be careful."

Looking at the massive pit created by the giant pig, Li Wei silently curled his lips into a wicked smile, then immediately returned to normal, signaling that he understood.

After clearing the debris, Robert had his dog, Sam, sit in the back seat, then smiled and gestured for Li Wei to sit in the passenger seat.

When Li Wei sat down, the car sank noticeably, but Robert, still in a state of excitement, didn't notice the anomaly.

Robert simply got into the driver's seat, ended his day's activities, and drove toward his villa.

With his foot on the gas and his hands on the wheel, he glanced at Li Wei with a smile from time to time, thinking about how they could have a tea party like girls and chat all night once they got back!

This bizarre state made Li Wei's mouth twitch. "Hey, Robert, don't do that. Your look makes me feel like you're gay!"

Hearing this, Robert felt a bit awkward, but he was just so happy to have met someone after three years.

"Sorry, I'm just... so happy. I haven't seen a living person in three years!"

His voice was slightly choked, prompting Sam, who was sitting in the back, to poke his head forward and lick Robert's face for comfort.

Only then did Robert realize he had forgotten to introduce the dog to Li Wei. He stroked Sam's head and said with a smile, "I forgot to introduce him. This is Sam, my good partner!"

Li Wei also reached out to pet Sam's head and said with a smile, "I understand how you feel... that kind of loneliness. But there are over seven billion people in the world. Even if 99% have disappeared, the base number is still large. There will be people where there should be people; you just haven't gone looking for them."

Robert fell silent for a moment upon hearing this, then shook his head helplessly. "I can't... this is the ground zero of the KV virus outbreak. I have to stay here to research a vaccine."

"How is the vaccine research coming along?"

Li Wei knew this; he still remembered the plot of I Am Legend!

So he asked about the progress of the vaccine, intending to help finish it quickly so Robert could take his dog and run, saving them both from further trouble.
