Background / History
Three years after the KV Virus outbreak, Darkseekers dominate Manhattan at night. Nearly 70% of the city’s pre-evacuation population became Darkseekers; continual cannibalistic conflict reduced their numbers from hundreds of thousands to only tens of thousands. 56
They survive by hunting other Darkseeker tribes, since they cannot use or digest human food and Manhattan’s remaining animal population cannot sustain them. 56
Li Wei initially encounters increasingly organized Darkseeker groups around Manhattan. Their recovering brain function grants them judgment, communication, leadership structures, and the ability to retreat from unwinnable fights rather than blindly attacking. 47
Robert Neville captures a male Darkseeker for his 87th vaccine trial. The first injection briefly improves the subject’s condition before it dies; after Li Wei proposes cooling the subject and administering the vaccine through an IV drip, a later trial successfully reduces its aggression and restores sensitivity to light without causing a harmful reaction. 51 52
The treated subject is subsequently taught simple words through reward-based conditioning and is able to move under sunlight, though it remains volatile and attacks Anna after seeing her. 53 54 It later travels with Robert, Anna, Yinsen, Sam, and Li Wei when they leave Manhattan. 58
Outside New York, Robert and the others encounter a new daylight-active type of Darkseeker. Its existence threatens the survivors’ former daytime safety and undermines Robert’s hope that his vaccine can secure humanity’s future. 59 60
Appearance
Darkseekers are infected humanoids with gray or gray-white skin, manic movement, and unusually high body heat. Their appearance and coloration can partially normalize after successful vaccine treatment. 47 52 53
- Gray-skinned normal individuals are commonly active after sunset. 47
- Their average internal temperature is approximately 42°C; one test subject measured 108°F. 47 51
- A captured adult male required roughly six times a normal human sedative dose, had a heart rate of 200 beats per minute, and blood-oxygen levels around three times normal. 51
- Li Wei’s Blacklight-modified Darkseekers have pale-red skin and are physically stronger than ordinary Darkseekers. 51 55
- A later variant can remain active in daylight. 59
Abilities & Characteristics
Enhanced Physicality
Darkseekers combine wolf-like ferocity with monkey-like agility. They are somewhat stronger than ordinary humans and can sprint, leap, climb, shove, headbutt, claw, and bite with extreme aggression. 55 56
- They can launch themselves four-legged at targets and overwhelm unarmed humans through superior strength. 54 56
- Their combat is primarily instinctive and brutal rather than technically refined. 56
- Some muscular leaders are significantly more powerful than ordinary members and can command large nests. 56
Heat and Metabolism
Their elevated temperature and rapid metabolism affect both their behavior and medical treatment. 50 51
- High body temperature weakens the effectiveness of Robert’s vaccine unless the subject is cooled first. 51
- Ice packs and slow IV administration allow the vaccine to stabilize a treated subject. 52
- Normal Darkseekers fear cold conditions. 50
Nocturnal Adaptation
Darkseekers are primarily nocturnal and normally avoid sunlight and ultraviolet exposure. 53 59
- Nightfall triggers large-scale hunting activity and territorial expansion. 55 56
- A vaccine-treated subject can tolerate ultraviolet light and sunlight after its condition improves. 52 53
- Daylight-active Darkseekers emerge later, eliminating humanity’s former daytime refuge. 59 60
Intelligence and Communication
Darkseekers are not wholly mindless. Their intelligence results from gradually recovering brain function rather than an independent evolutionary leap. 47
- Leaders issue commands through roars and posturing. 47 56
- Tribes maintain strict hierarchies, nests, territories, and small factional communities. 47 55
- They recognize overwhelming threats and retreat when defeat is certain. 47 57
- Some groups employ rudimentary tactics, including throwing debris and concentrating around defended territory. 47
- A vaccine-treated subject can learn simple words and actively cooperate with training. 53
Tribes and Variants
| Type | Description | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Darkseeker | Gray-skinned, nocturnal KV Virus mutant driven by hunger and manic aggression. | 47 55 |
| Tribal leader | Larger or more muscular Darkseeker capable of directing a nest through roars and withdrawing when outmatched. | 47 56 57 |
| Pale-red modified Darkseeker | Darkseeker altered by Li Wei’s Blacklight Virus; stronger than average and responsive to his radio-like mental command. | 51 55 |
| Vaccine-treated Darkseeker | A captive subject stabilized by Robert’s vaccine and cooling treatment; calmer, light-tolerant, and capable of basic learning, but still unstable. | 52 53 54 |
| Daylight-active Darkseeker | A new infected type encountered outside Manhattan that can move during the day. | 59 60 |
Behavior
- Darkseekers hunt living creatures and other Darkseekers for food. 47 56
- Territorial tribes fight nightly to seize or defend nests, with conflicts often ending in mass cannibalism. 56
- Their aggression is not absolute; intimidation, leadership, and perceived strength influence whether they attack or flee. 47 55 57
- Their poor eyesight leaves them reliant on other senses, while their body heat makes them highly visible through thermal sensing. 47 55
- A treated individual retains strong instinctive reactions despite recovering cognition, including fixation on video stimuli and aggression toward Anna. 53 54
Story Role / Major Arcs
Manhattan Tribal Conflict
Li Wei encounters a horde of evolved Darkseekers, learns that their intelligence stems from recovering brain functions, and follows their leader toward the Empire State Building, where a much larger and more tactically capable group controls the area. 47
Robert’s Vaccine Trials
Li Wei helps Robert capture a Darkseeker for human testing. His recommendation to lower the subject’s temperature helps turn a failed trial into a temporary success, giving Robert evidence that the KV Virus may be treatable. 51 52
Training of the Treated Subject
Robert and Li Wei condition the recovering Darkseeker with video rewards and word cards. The subject learns basic commands and tolerates daylight, but its behavior remains dangerous when Anna arrives. 53 54
Li Wei’s Modified Horde
Li Wei maintains more than five hundred pale-red, Blacklight-enhanced Darkseekers under his influence. They attack the Times Square tribe, whose fighters outnumber them, beginning a large-scale territorial battle. 51 55 56
Daylight-Active Outbreak
While leaving Manhattan, Robert’s group discovers Darkseekers capable of daytime activity. The swarm attacks their convoy in Vermont, forcing the survivors into a desperate escape before Li Wei later decomposes the infected remaining in the town. 59 60 61
Trivia
- Li Wei calculates that assimilating 16,341 Darkseekers raises his Key’s energy to 56.88%. 49
- Darkseekers near the Empire State Building are numerous enough to register as thousands of heat sources through Li Wei’s thermal and pulse sensing. 47
- The Times Square tribe fields more than 1,000 members, including roughly 800 capable fighters. 56
