Background / History

Shiryu served as an Impel Down officer alongside Magellan and King. He was introduced as the prison's Deputy Warden, though later accounts also identify him as Vice Warden and Chief Guard. He treated the execution of prisoners as preventative security, claiming to be eliminating potential escapees rather than indulging in murder. 76 78

After a chief warden died and Hancock proved unreliable, Shiryu voluntarily expanded his patrol territory from Level 3 to cover Levels 1–3 of Impel Down. Escaped prisoner “Giant Bar” was confirmed dead after encountering him. 78

He repeatedly sought a duel with Longinus. Longinus had refused his challenges twelve years earlier, prompting Shiryu to identify the Admiral's concern for allies as a weakness. 428

Personality

Shiryu is cold, violent, and openly drawn to killing. He considers the screams of sinners proof of justice and regards prison patrols as opportunities to hunt. His conflict with Magellan stemmed from his habit of executing prisoners without authorization. 76 79

He is also calculating. To force Longinus into a duel, Shiryu endangered Domino and executed prisoners, betting that Longinus would intervene to protect innocents. 428

Despite his cruelty, Shiryu recognizes overwhelming strength without denial. He called Longinus a “monster among monsters,” later acknowledged that Longinus had become far stronger than eight years prior, and warned Blackbeard not to underestimate the Admiral's ability to create miracles. 79 561 559

After being released from isolation during the prison riot, Shiryu ignored Magellan's orders and defected. He joined Blackbeard's crew, becoming its principal swordsman during the escape and subsequent Marineford conflict. 558 571

Shiryu fought alongside Blackbeard against Dragon's Revolutionary Army, but the encounter became another disastrous setback for the crew. He later remained with Blackbeard while the captain pursued further Devil Fruit power. 593 594 592

Death

During a later confrontation, Shiryu was killed after inadvertently witnessing something he should not have seen and being overwhelmed by Longinus, Bullet, and Redfield. Bullet and Redfield told Blackbeard that Shiryu had sacrificed himself by restraining Longinus so the others could escape. 668
