Background / History

Stark is the head of Stark Industries and a celebrated weapons inventor. While demonstrating company weapons in Afghanistan, he is captured by terrorists and left dependent on a chest-mounted power source after shrapnel threatens his heart. During three months of captivity, he secretly builds a crude armored suit, escapes the cave, and reaches the desert exhausted and injured. 97

He encounters Li Feng—introduced to him as “Austin,” a wizard—outside a concealed RV. Li Feng heals Stark's external injuries, but cannot immediately resolve the damage around his chest reactor. Stark remains skeptical of magic and quietly orders Pepper Potts to investigate Li Feng, suspecting that his rescuer wants something in return. 97 100

After returning to New York, Stark shuts down Stark Industries' weapons-manufacturing division and asks Li Feng to serve as a temporary bodyguard while identifying the traitor responsible for his abduction. Though Li Feng warns him about Obadiah Stane, Stark ultimately battles Stane's Iron Monger armor and is left near death before Li Feng saves him with Eternal Spring. 102 108 130

Stark later uses Eternal Spring to survive surgery removing the shrapnel from his chest.
