Power Progression
Monster Beasts have individual ranks rather than a shared cultivation level. The following records document transformations and advancements among their members.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary dog → Monster Beast | 3 | After staring at blood, a small white dog rapidly enlarges, sheds its fur, and becomes a calf-sized, blood-colored predator. Its rank is not stated. |
| Newly transformed examination beasts → stronger evolved beasts | 14 | Some beasts devour corpses left by examinees and evolve during the examination. Their resulting ranks are not specified. |
| Silver Claw Rat King → Fourth Order | 64 | Eats other Monster Beasts to advance. Its limbs and belly fur turn silver, while its fluctuating aura shows incomplete control of its new strength. |
| Peak Sixth Order → Seventh Order | 87 94 | Li Yuqing explains that the victor of a duel between two Peak Sixth-Order beasts can advance. A newly advanced Seventh-Level beast subsequently commands Mount Tai’s defenders. |
| Local creatures → newly transformed or evolved Monster Beasts | 217 | The silver giant pillar’s spiritual energy storm produces more beasts as it spreads. |
| Battlefield beasts → further evolution | 269 | Increasing spiritual energy during the A-Class Beast Tide causes some participating beasts to evolve. |
| Special beasts on Helan Mountain → evolved forms | 332 | A spiritual energy eruption strengthens the creatures involved in trapping Feng Xiaotian’s rescue party. Individual ranks are not stated. |
| Flame Mountain Divine Sparrow: Late Ninth Level → Peak Ninth Level | 418 | Sheds its feathers and regrows a more vibrant crimson plumage. Its combat strength multiplies, bringing it close to a Restricted Zone overlord’s strength. |
Biology and Behavior
Transformation and Evolution
- Spiritual energy eruptions can create new Monster Beasts and accelerate the evolution of existing ones 17 217 332.
- Devouring other beasts is another route to advancement. Corpse consumption strengthens examination-ground beasts and allows the Silver Claw Rat King to reach Fourth Order 14 64.
- Transformation can be extremely rapid. The dog in Bigui Residential Area changes within a few breaths, accompanied by cracking bones, swelling flesh, and fur loss 3.
- Pets are a potential source of danger. The witnesses associate the dog’s transformation with its lack of preventive shots, despite its owner’s earlier claim that it had been vaccinated 3.
Feeding and Attraction
Monster Beasts prey on humans, particularly warriors whose bodies contain absorbed spiritual energy. Blood-rich bodily residue can reveal a warrior’s location to a hunting beast 7.
- Blood scent: Beast blood attracts additional predators and is deliberately used as bait by Shi Yan, Gu Feng’s team, and Li Yuqing 14 82.
- Spiritual energy: Dense energy can draw low-level beasts into danger even after a powerful human has frightened them away 217.
- Cannibalism: Beasts consume their own kind and other species to grow stronger 14 64 250.
- Natural treasures: Powerful beasts compete over resources such as Sacred Healing Fire, even when doing so leaves them severely injured 167.
Intelligence and Temperament
Low-level beasts commonly attack humans with little judgment. Higher-ranked beasts can assess opponents, maintain territories, command subordinates, and retreat from threats they cannot overcome 82 83 165 445.
- Fourth Order: The Golden Bear evaluates Shi Yan before attacking; beasts of this rank and above can resist the lure of blood 82 83.
- Fifth Order: The Ghost Shadow Leopard Cat displays humanlike disdain and mockery. Fifth-Order beasts also possess territorial awareness 84 165.
- Seventh Order: Intelligence is stated to be no lower than that of an ordinary adult human 94.
- Emperor level: The Snow Leopard Demon Emperor considers its dignity, the risk posed by Po’s flying dagger, and whether to send subordinates against the humans 176.
- Instinct can override training: Lingnan Martial School’s trained beasts lose coordination when frustration and rage overwhelm their reason 137.
- Ferocity is not universal: Kunlun’s beasts possess greater spirituality, seek safety, and can cooperate with human martial artists 418.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Natural Weapons
- Monster Beasts generally become stronger as their rank rises and win more often than humans in same-level, one-on-one fights 48.
- Fangs, claws, speed, and durable bodies are common weapons. A Fifth-Order Ghost Shadow Leopard Cat can defeat B-Grade alloy armor with a single claw strike 57 84.
- Size does not reliably indicate rank: the Fifth-Order leopard cat is less than a meter long, while a Fourth-Order Golden Bear stands approximately six meters tall 82 84.
- Some retain animal instincts. A Second-Order green python flees from Shi Yan’s flames, apparently retaining a snake’s fear of high temperatures 16.
Demon Cores
Reaching Fourth Order transforms a beast’s body and generally produces a Demon Core, increasing physical strength, power, and endurance severalfold 64.
- Usual location: Inside the head 64.
- Strength-type exception: Cores are generally near the heart; the Golden Bear’s core is recovered there 82.
- Form: The Golden Bear’s core is an irregular dark-red crystal, larger than the Silver Claw Rat’s core 82.
- Power control: A newly advanced beast may not immediately master its increased strength, as shown by the Rat King’s unstable aura 64.
Species-Specific Powers
| Beast | Documented ability or trait |
|---|---|
| Gold-Devouring Rat | Eats metal and attacks in groups, threatening the metal frameworks and pipes of cities 7. |
| Golden Bear | Possesses exceptional strength and defense. Its berserk state further enhances both while reducing clarity and sensitivity to pain 82. |
| Ghost Shadow Leopard Cat | Uses extreme speed and afterimages to evade attacks and strike through armor 84. |
| Blizzard Bear Demon | Turns surrounding snow into a storm when attacking 167. |
| Black Scale Demon Snake | Uses a massive tail and venom capable of inflicting severe injuries on Sixth-Order opponents 167. |
| Snow Sword Silver Eagle | Combines wind blades with an ultra-low-temperature environment; Shi Yan’s flames counter these advantages 209. |
| Long-armed Ape Demon | Uses wooden spikes, one of which pierces Shi Yan’s thigh during the Mount Tai battle 94. |
Emperor Domains
Monster Emperors possess domains that impose control over an area and diminish the effectiveness of an opponent’s martial arts 338.
- Their domains are generally inferior to those of human Martial Emperors; roughly half their strength comes from their bodies and innate abilities 338.
- An opponent without a domain can use physical strength to carve out room to move and restore the effectiveness of their attacks 338.
- An Emperor’s aura can overwhelm much weaker fighters before the creature itself appears 175.
Beast Tides
A Beast Tide is a mass movement of Monster Beasts. Its danger depends on leadership, organization, and collective pressure—not simply the strength of individual members 172 174 399.
| Feature | Effect |
|---|---|
| Collective aura | Bloodthirsty pressure disrupts concentration, slows reactions, and weakens army morale. Shi Yan is affected despite possessing Martial General-level Spiritual Power 174. |
| Low-level vanguard | Low-ranked beasts ordinarily charge first as expendable cannon fodder 228 269. |
| Powerful rear guard | A genuinely threatening tide has a Monster King or Monster Emperor holding the rear 172. |
| Species organization | Ordinary tides arrange different beast types in an orderly fashion; a muddy, mixed swarm near the border instead appears to be fleeing underground danger 215. |
| Militarized command | Clear divisions of labor and disciplined advances and retreats maximize the horde’s strength. Such tides are difficult to create and require an exceptional commander such as the Silver Arm Ape Emperor 399. |
| Leadership collapse | Cheng Batian’s killing of a Beast Emperor spreads fear through the surviving beasts and triggers a rout 270. |
Documented Large-Scale Tides
- Mount Tai: A Seventh-Level ruler uses Fourth-Order commanders and Third-Order troops to exhaust Shi Yan and Li Yuqing before summoning beasts from across the mountain 94.
- Monkey Country border: A B-Class tide crosses into Huaxia. Its vanguard dies in Shi Yan’s Divine Decay Fire, while three Seventh-Order beasts attempt to attack him directly 228 229.
- Annan Country direction: An A-Class tide brings hundreds of thousands of beasts against Huaxia’s martial artists. Six Martial Emperors engage the enemy Emperors while Shi Yan blocks the largest wave 269.
- Hundred Thousand Great Mountains: Local Emperors mobilize an unusually relentless horde. After Shi Yan disrupts its advance, they replace the vanguard with Fifth- and Sixth-Level beasts 395 396.
Habitats and Restricted Zones
Monster Beasts occupy mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, seas, underground passages, and even urban buildings. Human patrols suppress their numbers and prevent powerful beasts from lingering near base cities 3 7 25 62 277.
| Location | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Baiyun City | Rats, cats, and other beasts appear throughout residential areas despite inspections by the Monster Suppression Bureau 6 7. |
| Mount Tai | Contains varied, numerous beasts and territorial rulers. Higher-ranked creatures are more common around Middle Heaven Gate than on the lower slopes 82 83. |
| Tianshan Mountains Restricted Zone | Houses several Monster Emperors; the Snow Leopard Demon Emperor ranks second within the zone 175. |
| Changbai Mountains Restricted Zone | Its rulers and remaining beasts are eliminated during Huaxia’s conquest 349 350 351. |
| Kunlun Restricted Zone | Has more Seventh-Level-and-above beasts than Tianshan and Changbai combined. Many resemble mythical creatures and do not initiate attacks on outsiders 391 418. |
| Hundred Thousand Great Mountains | Regarded as the world’s most dangerous Restricted Zone. Beast density is at least a hundred times that of Changbai, and its inhabitants are unusually fearless and aggressive 391 395 396. |
| Azure Lotus True God’s Secret Realm | Contains creatures trapped after the god’s death. The Nine-Turn Divine Cicada has hunted and devoured its strongest beasts for ten thousand years 655. |
History
During the early Spiritual Revival, countless Monster Beasts attacked and devoured humans. Thermal weapons proved of little use, and humanity suffered repeated defeats. The emergence of warriors ended the Era of Chaos and enabled the construction of defensive lines 3.
As warriors increased in number and strength, humanity built Great Base Cities. After beasts were driven into mountains and waterways, these cities divided into smaller settlements. City-destroying attacks became rarer during the Small Base Era, but fatal encounters continued 3 7.
Organized resistance could provoke wider retaliation. During the early Defense Line Era, Huaxia’s establishment of nationwide defenses was followed by a worldwide beast uprising that included marine creatures. The later discovery that killing beasts increases spiritual energy raised the prospect of another all-out war 231.
Huaxia eventually pursued the broader goal of making the beast threat controllable through suppression, captivity, and medicine against demonic transformation. Most countries declined to join its initiative at the Global Martial Arts Leaders Summit. Huaxia nevertheless conquered the Changbai Mountains Restricted Zone, while anticipating retaliatory attacks elsewhere 283 351.
Human Interaction and Uses
Suppression and Training
- Monster Suppression Bureau: Responds to urban incidents, restricts access to affected residential areas, and collects blood, fur, and other samples 6 7 8.
- Martial education: Beast hunting forms part of examinations, university operations, and talent assessments. Lingnan Martial School maintains a restricted range containing trained, cooperating beasts 14 57 136 137.
- Shi Yan’s system: Killing beasts grants Martial Virtue Points. Rewards vary with the target and whether the kill exceeds his own level: a First-Level Gold-Devouring Rat grants 2 points, while a Fifth-Level beast killed above his level grants 1,000 7 138.
- Taming: Beasts are notoriously difficult to tame, but Kunlun’s more spiritual inhabitants can cooperate with Huaxia. Shi Yan also binds the Spatial Rift Python as a servant 418 655.
Harvested Resources
- Hide: Shi Yan uses beast hide as more durable clothing after ordinary outfits are ruined during prolonged hunting 31.
- Construction materials: Monster Beast materials are incorporated into Magic Martial University’s gates 31.
- Demon Cores: Supply energy to Shi Yan’s saber and Li Yuqing’s machinery; Mu Yuqing uses a core to reach Eighth Tier 82 86 283.
- Heart blood: Feeds the Blood Pattern Geng Gold Grass, supporting its growth and advancement 332 337.
- Bones and remnant souls: Alloy Emperor assembles them into an unfinished colossal skeleton animated through Soul Flame 411.
