Background / History

Yorktown was found mortally wounded in an unknown location by Gwen. While treating her with telekinesis, Gwen discovered that she could absorb his power; after fifteen minutes of treatment, she awakened with no understanding of why she had survived. She instinctively addressed Gwen as “Commander,” then identified herself as the lead ship of the Yorktown-class aircraft carriers. 56

Because Ship Girls require a Commander with exceptional mental strength to form a deep spiritual bond and amplify their combat abilities, Yorktown understood Gwen's status almost immediately. Gwen apologized for benefiting from her vulnerable condition, but Yorktown accepted his apology and admitted that her sisters would likely envy her for finding a Commander. 57

Gwen brought Yorktown to the Brest Shipyard in France, where she manifested her heavily damaged historical hull. Otto agreed to fund repairs and investigate upgrades based on Yorktown-class blueprints.
