Mysterious Origins

Wei Lanshan did not keep watching. After that, she no longer viewed Subject 99's live surveillance footage either. She wanted to stop the feelings quietly spreading through her heart.

Even so, during her breaks, she did several things that Wu Yuan could not understand.

When Sixi needed an energy replacement, she used her authority to upgrade Sixi.

Subject 99 merely wondered how Sixi had suddenly gained so much more knowledge. She guessed that perhaps she had grown older and could now learn more things.

It never occurred to her that Wei Lanshan would do something so unbecoming of her position.

Life in the facility was exceptionally dull. Every three Tianning Star days, Subject 99 had to endure a bout of excruciating torture that lasted two days.

No one could lessen her pain. Subject 99 could only grit her teeth and endure it. Several times, she had been on the verge of death, only for Wei Lanshan to save her.

This inhuman torment continued until she was four years old.

During those three years of constant drug injections, genetic testing, and gene recombination experiments, Subject 99 had once thought she would not make it. Her body had repeatedly stood on the brink of collapse. The pain was worse than death.

The tests grew more numerous, and the drugs became more frequent and more complex. Yet in the end, she survived, relying on her own tenacious willpower to hold on. Whether that was fortunate or unfortunate, she did not know.

Whenever she was in pain, Sixi told her stories, played music, and spoke of happy things to soothe her. Usually, Sixi also taught her, brought her Nutrient Paste, and played with her.

From the time she learned to speak and communicate with others, Sixi had always been by her side.

If not for Sixi's presence, and for the fact that her mind could sneak out to play, Subject 99 figured she would have gone mad or become an idiot long ago.

Over those four years, Sixi taught her language—the most basic Alliance language—as well as writing. Sixi divided all the knowledge infants and young children were required to master into several stages and taught her systematically.

There was also some advanced knowledge. Everything stored in Sixi's chip was taught to Subject 99.

Through Sixi's chip, Subject 99 caught a glimpse of one corner of this world.

After learning language and writing, Subject 99 came to understand this vast world even better.

At the end of the second star year, when Subject 99 was four years old, Wei Lanshan obtained an exhilarating result.

After Subject 99 endured the final set of drug tests, the M Virus in her body had completely died out. Neither her Mental Power nor her physical abilities had been damaged. Moreover, her Mental Power showed signs of extending further.

Wei Lanshan stared at the testing instruments, her face filled with disbelief. She checked five times in total. The instruments were not broken.

She used her authority to consult extensive records, yet there was no relevant documentation. No data showed that Mental Power could continue to extend after reaching 3S.

The Alliance had always believed that 3S was the pinnacle. In the Alliance's 2,802-year history, there had never been a case that surpassed this boundary. Even including the 6,000 years of the chaotic era, there had been no relevant records in 8,802 years.

Wei Lanshan walked out of the laboratory. After closing the door, she looked at the lively Subject 99 in the facility, and a mad idea arose in her heart.

She did not immediately report the experiment's success to Ye Yunhan. Instead, she shut herself in her room alone for three full days. No one knew what she had done inside. When Wei Lanshan emerged, her face held the courage of someone who had burned all her bridges.

When Wei Lanshan stepped out of her room, she had changed her mindset.

She went to the laboratory where Subject 99 was staying and shared the experimental data with Lin Zeyu. She instructed them to follow the procedure, the drug formula, and the sequence for adjusting, adding, deleting, and overwriting the test subjects' genes. Afterward, she destroyed everything in Subject 99's laboratory.

She took the initiative to speak to Subject 99. "Stay here and do not run around. I will completely seal off this laboratory. Neither Mental Power nor instruments will be able to detect this place. You will continue living here for now. Sixi will stay with you, and I will come find you later. Do you understand?"

Subject 99 nodded. Wei Lanshan's expression was unexpectedly grave. She did not know what had happened for the moment, but she felt that it concerned her life and death.

While wandering around over the past few days, she had learned that Wei Lanshan and the others had succeeded in their experiment. Success meant that, as test subjects, they had lost their usefulness.

The outcome was obvious.

Wei Lanshan carried out more secret work. Even Wu Yuan did not know what she was doing.

After completing these preparations, Wei Lanshan sent the news back to Tianning Star. Ye Yunhan was beside himself with joy when he received it.

He immediately rushed to the subsidiary planet Q68 with his wife Tang Yongyu and Ye Zhenwei. However, Ye Yunhan received orders to head to the front lines midway through the journey, so in the end, Tang Yongyu brought their daughter Ye Zhenwei to the subsidiary planet Q68.

When Tang Yongyu arrived, she did not urgently demand that Wei Lanshan begin Ye Zhenwei's treatment at once.

She had Wei Lanshan take her to see the other test subjects. Wei Lanshan told Lin Zeyu and the others to bring over Subjects 95 through 98.

Tang Yongyu was very satisfied. The condition of these test subjects was unexpectedly good, and their Mental Power levels were quite outstanding. What a pity.

Tang Yongyu asked, "Are you certain the M Virus in these bodies has disappeared, rather than merely gone into hiding?"

Wei Lanshan replied, "We conducted several tests. We can already confirm that they have recovered completely."

Lin Zeyu said, "Yes. These are the experimental data. Ten days have passed since their final test, and there has been no discomfort whatsoever. Miss Ye's Mental Power is powerful, so her recovery will be faster."

Tang Yongyu looked at her listless daughter nearby, and pain flooded her heart beyond measure.

After Ye Zhenwei fell ill, she spent most of her time asleep. Although she possessed talent that the entire Alliance envied, if this continued, that talent would only become a burden to her.

How could a mother not hurt? She could feel every bit of her daughter's suffering as though it were her own.

Tang Yongyu said, "Doctor Wei, then let us begin. We'll leave Zhenwei in your care."

Wei Lanshan replied, "You are too polite, Madam Ye. If you have any other questions, you may ask them before treatment begins."

Tang Yongyu said, "Not for now. I'll ask you if I think of anything."

At present, she cared only about her daughter's treatment. Everything else could be discussed later. In any case, this laboratory was already under her control. No one would escape her grasp.

Ye Zhenwei opened her eyes and looked at the unfamiliar surroundings before her. She was already twelve years old and had long known that something was wrong with her body. This time, however, her mother said it could be cured completely.

She would no longer have to spend every day asleep. Once she recovered, she would head straight to Capital Star Gaia of the Alliance, where she would receive the best education. Her mother said that she would become the brightest star in the entire Alliance.

Hearing this, Ye Zhenwei began to look forward to the future. She forced her eyes open and looked at the test subjects before her. They were all adorably fair and delicate, and their gazes held nothing but curiosity.

They were still young and probably did not understand the meaning of their birth. Yet Ye Zhenwei could not shake her discomfort.

Her life had actually been saved by these little children, and they even shared the same bloodline as her.

During her illness, Ye Zhenwei sometimes found it difficult to control her emotions and often threw tantrums for no reason. Tang Yongyu always let her vent and never stopped her.
