Background and History
Jiraiya grew up alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade. He regarded Orochimaru as both a companion and a rival, pursuing his strength since childhood. The three fought together in the Land of Rain, where their battle with Hanzō ended in a draw and earned them the name Konoha Sannin 2 9 10.
After meeting the war orphans Yahiko, Konan and Nagato, Jiraiya stayed to care for and train them. He initially wanted to understand Yahiko's aims before accepting him as a disciple; after discovering Nagato's Rinnegan, he came to believe Nagato was the Child of Prophecy described by the Great Toad Sage 10 11. His other disciple, Minato Namikaze, remained in Konoha. Jiraiya later transferred his combat merits to Minato so he could choose a technique from the Scroll of Seals 18.
Jiraiya continued to serve Konoha during its wars, including commanding the defense of Hot Spring City and fighting the Third Tsuchikage, Ōnoki 59 104 105. After Hiruzen Sarutobi's death, he returned to the village. Though uneasy with Orochimaru's plan for war, he agreed to lead the force sent against Sunagakure, with Shisui Uchiha as his deputy 204. Their forces breached the village's defenses and defeated Ebizo 214 216.
Appearance
Jiraiya has long white hair, which he can extend and use to bind or shield others. In Sage Mode, his face develops frog-like features and eye markings 9 105 233.
- Wore a green frog suit, complete with a round frog head, as a teaching prop for his pupils 11.
Personality
Jiraiya is boastful and prone to teasing his friends, especially Orochimaru and Tsunade. He also has a lecherous streak that repeatedly draws their criticism 2 3 18.
He takes responsibility for people affected by war. He fed the three Land of Rain orphans and stayed to teach them partly because Konoha had brought war to their country 10. As a commander, he favors cautious defense and places great value on each comrade's safety 59. His wish for peace persists, though years of travel leave him increasingly doubtful that mutual understanding alone can bring it about 207.
