Background / History

Hongjun survived as a Great Dao Demon God and later became the Dao Ancestor of the Mystic Gate. During the Dao-Demon conflict, he joined Luohu in destroying the West, leaving Mount Sumeru as its remnant; the resulting karmic debt to the Primordial Era became central to his later designs. 10 28

He manipulated the Witch-Demon Calamity by intervening when the Twelve Ancestral Witches manifested Pangu’s True Body. With a single finger, Hongjun shattered the manifestation and imposed the division in which demons governed Heaven and witches governed Earth, setting the two races on the path toward mutual destruction. 19 24

To repay his karmic debt and prepare for the West’s prosperity, Hongjun engineered the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. He created the separation of the Three Realms and the Heavenly Lock, limiting mortal cultivation and regulating ascension between realms. 7 10

Tongtian’s unexpected insight exposed the broader purpose behind the calamity: weakening the Mystic Gate while laying foundations for the West. Hongjun investigated Tongtian by attaching divine sense to him, but the master of Penglai Immortal Island erased it completely, exposing a being beyond Hongjun’s perception. 5 6

Hongjun had also refined Yang Mei into a puppet while allowing him an independent existence, intending to use him as a controllable Western Dao Ancestor. Yang Mei’s death at Tongtian’s hands severely disrupted this contingency. 33 36 39

After the Investiture of the Gods, Hongjun pushed the Journey to the West and the Rise of the West, intending to clear his remaining karma. His ultimate objective was to eliminate the Saints, seize the Heavenly Dao, and use it to ascend to the Great Dao. 40 57 144

The Heavenly Dao ultimately revealed that it had consciousness and had permitted Hongjun’s schemes only until he neared success. It resurrected and empowered Luohu as a counterweight, forcing Hongjun toward an unavoidable Dao-Demon conflict. 145 147

Appearance

Hongjun appears as a Daoist in coarse hemp robes, suspended above the Blood Sea and surrounded by an overwhelming, domineering radiance. 148

Hongjun is calculating, patient, and intensely ambitious. He plans across vast spans of time, treats calamities as instruments, and is willing to manipulate sects, disciples, and entire realms to repay karma and pursue control of the Heavenly Dao. 14 40 144

He maintains an aloof, authoritative exterior as the Dao Ancestor, but becomes visibly unsettled when events escape his calculations—particularly Tongtian’s growth, Penglai Immortal Island, and Luohu’s return. 5 6 36 144
