Background

Fang Yan was born in the secluded Fang Village, where the Fang clan lived peacefully for generations. His childhood ended when black-robed attackers massacred the village, killed his father, and captured the survivors. A purple-eyed masked figure arranged for the surviving Fang clansmen to be handed over to the Nangong Family as slaves. 21

While sparring with Nangong Qi at the age of ten, Fang Yan awakened the Fang clan's ancient bloodline and inherited the Blood God Art. As the only known awakened Fang survivor, he became valuable to the Nangong Family. They made him Nangong Qi's bodyguard and enforcer, while using the continued survival of his imprisoned clansmen and gravely ill sister to ensure his obedience. 21

At Qinglan Academy's inter-class competition, Nangong Qi ordered Fang Yan to defeat Hao Meng at any cost. After Fang Yan was badly injured, Nangong Qi forced him to consume the Blood Demon Pill by threatening his family. The pill amplified his blood energy but consumed his life force and stripped away his self-control; Hao Meng ultimately defeated him. 19 20

Nangong Qi then tried to kill Fang Yan for failing, but Li Mu intervened publicly and forced Nangong Qi to take him for treatment instead. 21

Nangong Bo later assigned Fang Yan an impossible assassination mission against Li Mu or Li Yue, intending to dispose of him regardless of the outcome. Fang Yan discovered that the Nangong Family had already slaughtered his remaining relatives in the mansion's sewers. Their deaths drove his Core Formation breakthrough and turned his loyalty to the Nangong Family into a vow of vengeance. 81 82

After leaving Qinglan City, Fang Yan advanced through constant battle. He later saved the severely injured Li Mu and Lin Qingzhu from a peak Level 2 Badger Beast. Upon learning the truth of his past, Li Mu persuaded Fang Yan to pursue not only revenge, but the restoration of the Fang clan; Fang Yan joined Li Mu and Lin Qingzhu on their journey. 79 82 83

Appearance

Fang Yan is a sharp-featured young man whose contained presence conceals intense blood energy. He usually dresses in black and carries an exposed saber; in battle, his Blood God Art can cover him in crimson armor and turn his eyes blood-red. 17 18

The slaughter of the remaining Fang clan initially left him fixated on revenge. Li Mu's intervention redirected that purpose: Fang Yan accepts that he must preserve and restore the Fang family's legacy rather than live solely to kill the Nangongs. 82 83

He is direct in conflict and intensely focused on cultivation, but he is dependable toward companions. He protected Lin Qingzhu from Hua Aotian, remained vigilant during dangerous investigations, and repeatedly fights beside Li Mu's group without hesitation. 91 96 144
