Traps
In the early morning, the morning mist in the forest had not yet dissipated.
The weeds were covered with dew, and a beam of light shone through the morning mist onto the leaves of the withered grass, making the glistening dewdrops shine with a faint luster like crystals.
As the elves passed through the tall grass, the dew would wet everyone's trousers. The wet trousers clung to their calves, making them feel cold and uncomfortable.
Instructor Eleanor hid in the weeds, her body pressed against the grass, her hair wet with dew. She dared not move, blending into the surrounding weeds.
Before her, several adult dire wolves, each larger than a rhinoceros, silently followed the caravan's tracks.
Instructor Eleanor carefully counted them; there were seven dire wolves in total.
Seven dire wolves were already deadly enough for the caravan in front of them, but that wasn't all the dire wolves that were following behind.
This was the third group of dire wolves to pass by Instructor Eleanor, and of course, the largest group. Among them was even Wolf King, who had just glanced suspiciously in the direction where Instructor Eleanor was hiding.
Instructor Eleanor's stealth skills allowed her to blend seamlessly into the grass, but the Wolf King's instinct for danger made it glance in the direction where Instructor Eleanor was hiding...
Fortunately, Instructor Eleanor remained calm enough to stay hidden in the bushes without moving an inch...
Once she's spotted by these dire wolves, she probably won't be able to get back to the Adventure Group safely.
Once all the dire wolves had passed, Elinore counted them—there were sixteen in total. She couldn't help but wipe the dew from her face, quickly took a detour to catch up with the caravan, and told Instructor Nora the news.
Instructor Nora was startled. She had guessed that a few dire wolves might be following the caravan, and she was also thinking about whether to set up some traps along the way and then ambush them to hunt down the dire wolves one by one.
If the Adventure Group were to fight the dire wolves head-on, they could probably stop two of them.
If three dire wolves were to charge at the same time, the pressure on Instructor Nora, Instructor Virgil, and Instructor Eleanor would be immense.
If they can't be stopped, it will become incredibly troublesome if the dire wolves charge towards Instructor Gru, Miss Christine, and the Magician Scarlett at the back of the squad.
But now there are more than just a few dire wolves behind them. If all sixteen dire wolves charge at them at the same time, they could tear their Adventure Group to shreds in an instant.
Of course, these dire wolves weren't just targeting Adventure Group; their biggest prey was caravans and the accompanying Half-Elf.
Instructor Nora immediately informed Commander Sindji about the matter.
Commander Sindji was also shocked. How could so many dire wolves suddenly appear? The caravan had passed through this Magic Beast Forest before and had also encountered dire wolf attacks, but those dire wolves had never formed a large group. There were also several Warrior Class in the caravan, and Mercenary Group had accompanied them, so the previous times they had passed through this jungle without any major incidents.
But now, sixteen dire wolves have appeared behind the group, which is a real problem.
These dire wolves might just devour them, leaving not even bones and fragments. Thinking of this, Commander Sindji wiped the sweat from his brow and looked at Instructor Nora Instructor Nora with a nervous expression, asking, "Instructor Nora, do you have any good ideas?"
Instructor Nora also looked troubled.
Just now, the Adventure Group had its first disagreement.
Instructor Nora wanted to run over to Commander Sindji to discuss how to deal with the dire wolves, but Instructor Virgil disagreed. He wanted to leave the caravan quietly before anyone knew about the news.
"If we go ourselves, we won't have so much trouble," Instructor Virgil whispered to everyone.
Instructor Nora frowned and said seriously, "If even we give up, who else will be willing to save them?"
The instructors fell silent, and even Magician Scarlett, who had always sided with Instructor Nora, did not immediately offer her support.
Instead, it was the usually taciturn Instructor Gru stepped forward and spoke:
"Nora is right. If even we think we can abandon these compatriots, then what will Roy, Sabrina, Christine others do when they encounter the same problem in the future?"
We are elves, and we will not easily abandon any of our companions. They are our companions too.
Instructor Gru pointed to the large group walking ahead and said solemnly.
Roy then mustered his courage and said, "I'm going to stay and fight those dire wolves together!"
"Me too!"
"Me too!"
Sabrina and Miss Christine spoke almost simultaneously.
"The minority must obey the majority, so I'll stay too. Virgil, you don't have much of a choice. Join us in figuring out how to deal with the dire wolves behind us. As long as they don't all charge at once, we still have a chance," Instructor Eleanor said, patting Instructor Virgil on the shoulder.
It was under these circumstances that Instructor Nora came to see Commander Sindji. Clearly, Commander Sindji hoped that Instructor Nora could provide a solution to the problem.
"I will lead the Adventure Group to try to take them down one by one. Hopefully, these dire wolves won't all rush up at once..." Instructor Nora said to Captain Sindji, "The caravan should also be prepared for battle. In addition, I would like to select some skilled elf hunters from among these Half-Elf to fight against these dire wolves with us."
"I'll go find someone right away. I've found out in the last few days that there are indeed quite a few experienced hunters among these Half-Elf."
Commander Sindji immediately said.
He then hurriedly walked towards the main force, constantly communicating with the elf hunters in the Half-Elf group.
It must be said that this kind of thing is more effective when done by professionals.
Under the persuasion of Commander Sindji, nearly thirty Half-Elf hunters expressed their willingness to fight the dire wolves together. They were all experienced hunters who usually hunted low-level magical beasts such as Wind Fox and Abdominal Poison Spider in the jungle and would almost always avoid dire wolves.
Now I have no choice but to bite the bullet and step forward.
These Half-Elf hunters almost exclusively use Forest Bow made of hardwood, equipped with Fletched Arrow with Fine Steel arrowheads. However, these hard bows are ineffective against dire wolves; unless they hit the dire wolf's eyes, they cannot penetrate its tough leather, especially given its bristles that are as hard as steel needles.
"Who is good at setting traps? We can set some traps along the way," Instructor Nora asked the assembled Half-Elf hunters.
One of the Half-Elf hunters stepped forward and said, "We can make some simple traps, but it takes a while to set them up. And these traps probably won't be very effective against dire wolves. They're hot-tempered, but they're not mindless..."
"If we can trap them, even for just a short while, we'll have a chance to kill them," Instructor Nora said confidently.
"Alright, let's set up a few traps ahead and use them to deal with these dire wolves once the main force passes by," the Half-Elf hunter said to Instructor Nora.
After saying that, he led more than a dozen companions and ran quickly to the front of the group.
Instructor Nora then looked at Instructor Eleanor.
"Alright, stop talking. I know what you want me to do. This is my job," Instructor Eleanor agreed without letting Instructor Nora speak.
"Roy, Sabrina, you two still need to protect Gelu, Christine, and Scarlett in the upcoming battle. It's best if you all stay together and don't spread out. Once the fighting starts, Virgil, Elinore, and I probably won't be able to protect you all..."
Instructor Nora gave Instructor Gru some instructions.
After saying this, Instructor Nora went among the Half-Elf hunters, asked them what they were good at, and then assigned them tasks.
One by one, the Half-Elf hunters stepped forward and began to introduce themselves.
These Half-Elf hunters use relatively primitive hunting methods, generally employing traps and bows and arrows, only rushing in to finish off monsters when they are on the verge of death.
The group of hunters who just left were more skilled at making traps, while the elven hunters who remained were better at archery.
Only seven Half-Elf hunters were equipped with waist knives, but they were all jungle rangers and not enough to confront these dire wolves head-on.
One thing that pleased Instructor Nora was that these Half-Elf hunters were quite skilled with arrows and had a wealth of experience in jungle hunting.
At this moment, Instructor Gru and Miss Christine took out their spare Battle Shortbow and lent them to the two best Half-Elf hunters. Even their spare Battle Shortbow were much better than the hardwood Forest Bow that the Half-Elf hunters usually used.
Instructor Nora asked the Half-Elf hunters why they didn't buy a better hunting bow. Half-Elf hunters' answer made Instructor Nora feel a lump in her throat. She never expected that in the southern Pattington Plane, the hunting and war bows used by the elves were regulated, and even if the hunters wanted to buy them, they couldn't.
Only a few half- Half-Elf who had served in the army brought back the longbows used in the army...
The atmosphere inside the caravan was somewhat tense, clearly because everyone knew that a pack of dire wolves was following them.
The Half-Elf were all navigating the marked forest paths.
In the trees, a group of elven hunters were setting traps in the woods. These traps were not animal traps, as the elven hunters' animal traps were not enough to restrain these dire wolves. Instead, they set up some nets in the trees. Although these nets could not withstand the dire wolves' bites, they could still cause them considerable trouble.
After the main force passed through the trap zone, Instructor Eleanor ran towards the dire wolves behind them.
She needs to lure one of the wolf packs into the trap area beforehand...
She didn't target the smallest wolf pack, nor did she provoke the pack with the Wolf King. Instead, she set her sights on a pack of six adult dire wolves, which appeared to be in a cooperative relationship, with no Chieftain or female wolf present.
Instructor Eleanor ran towards the pack of dire wolves, and only when she was within arrow range did she crouch down in a tree and fire an arrow at the dire wolf in the lead.
Instructor Eleanor was also an excellent archer.
That's what a wandering knight is like: skilled in close combat, skilled in archery, skilled in tracking and reconnaissance...
The arrow, imbued with Wind Element, flew silently toward the dire wolf at the front, and Instructor Eleanor chose to conceal the trajectory of the arrow among the dense foliage.
The arrow pierced through countless dense branches and leaves, and after piercing a leaf, it suddenly appeared in front of the dire wolf. The dire wolf didn't even have time to dodge; driven by instinct, it suddenly shook its head, and in the instant it raised its head, the arrow pierced its jaw and entered its mouth.
That was the most vulnerable spot on the wolf's fur, and the bullet pierced its mouth.
The first dire wolf let out a pitiful howl, and its companion immediately pounced on Instructor Eleanor in the tree branch.
Instructor Eleanor grabbed a vine that had been prepared beforehand, leaped, and ran forward.
As expected, the six dire wolves instantly flew into a rage, their manes standing on end. These dire wolves, which were even larger than rhinoceroses, were extremely terrifying as they ran through the jungle.
The other two wolf packs were not far behind the six dire wolves; they simply lagged far behind, observing the situation, and did not charge forward together...
Instructor Eleanor released the vines with both hands, and her body flew forward more than ten meters using the momentum. She landed on a horizontal branch of a large tree, and with a single step, she leaped up again. Her body was incredibly agile. The dire wolves behind her could only follow Instructor Eleanor's back. Although they were constantly closing the distance, they could not catch up with her easily.
When Instructor Eleanor Instructor Eleanor rushed into the ambush zone of the trap and saw that each tree had some symbols drawn on it, she ran forward according to the safety instructions.
The six dire wolves seemed to have sensed the danger ahead. Just then, Instructor Eleanor stopped on a large tree ahead, picked up her longbow, and fired another arrow at the dire wolves chasing after her.
Although the arrow had no lethal force, it was full of provocation.
Unable to contain their rage any longer, the six dire wolves roared and charged forward. As they rushed into the forest clearing, they found that dust suddenly billowed up in front of them, and a large net was falling from above.
The dire wolves immediately scattered in all directions, but just then, a layer of sharp ice crystals grew out of the ground beneath their feet.
' Icy Path '
Magician Scarlett's Ice Magic covered the entire forest clearing. The dire wolves didn't notice when they ran in, but as they prepared to turn, they immediately felt a stinging pain in their claws, and due to inertia, they all fell down on the Icy Path.
A large net fell instantly, completely trapping five of the dire wolves inside.
Only one dire wolf managed to escape the net. Just as it was enraged and thinking of turning back to save its companion, an arrow imbued with Wind Element shot through the air and struck it squarely on the forehead.
