Personality

Yan is straightforward, proud, and intensely emotional. His long-standing feelings for Hu Liena make him deeply hostile toward Sun Sheng when Sun Sheng rapidly gains her trust and affection. 10 11 His jealousy drives him and Xie Yue to exploit the Goliath Ant swarm as an opportunity to eliminate Sun Sheng. 11 13

Despite this ruthlessness, Yan is capable of remorse and change. Once Sun Sheng spares him from exposure over the Star Dou Great Forest incident and offers reconciliation, Yan confronts his resentment, dispels his Heart Demon, and recommits himself to the Golden Generation. 23 27 He later responds strongly to Sun Sheng’s generosity, regarding the gifted Soul Orb as proof of Sun Sheng’s tolerance. 47

Star Dou Great Forest conflict

Yan joins Hu Liena and Xie Yue’s expedition to obtain his ten-thousand-year Soul Ring. He immediately resents Sun Sheng’s closeness with Hu Liena and views him as a burden and romantic rival. 9 10 He and Xie Yue arrange for Sun Sheng to be surrounded by Goliath Ants, then abandon Hu Liena and leave Sun Sheng to face the Goliath Ant King. 11 13

When Sun Sheng survives, kills the Goliath Ant King, and obtains its Soul Ring, Yan realizes the danger of having made such a powerful enemy. 15 19

Integration into the Golden Generation

After Sun Sheng becomes Bibi Dong’s disciple, Yan’s status and relationship with Hu Liena are further threatened. 22 Sun Sheng chooses not to reveal Yan’s role in the forest incident, instead seeking to recruit him. 19 23

Before the group’s next forest expedition, Sun Sheng, Xie Yue, and Hu Liena confront Yan with an offer of unity. Yan accepts their support, overcomes his Heart Demon, and formally joins Sun Sheng’s effort to strengthen the Golden Generation. 27

Later expeditions

Yan fights alongside Xie Yue and Hu Liena against the ten-thousand-year Death Mantis, serving as the group’s principal attacker. 45 Afterward, he receives a Soul Orb from Sun Sheng, further strengthening the trust between them. 47
