Background / History
Jiraiya is one of Hiruzen Sarutobi's three personal disciples, alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade. During the Ninja Academy’s inter-grade matches, the three observe the students through Hiruzen’s Telescope Technique. Jiraiya’s immature behavior regularly earns Tsunade’s violence, including being punched into a wall and later through a window after staring at her chest. 34 40
At some point, Jiraiya was accidentally reverse-summoned to Mount Myōboku. He became its representative in the Shinobi World and pursued the Sage Arts taught there. 42 47
When the Hidden Rain Village declares war, Jiraiya joins Orochimaru, Tsunade, Kagami Uchiha, and Kato Dan on Konoha’s front line. He participates in Orochimaru’s attempted decapitation operation against Hanzō, using a giant toad as a diversion and helping infiltrate the Rain camp. 62 63
After Kato Dan is incapacitated by Kou and Otsu, Jiraiya refuses to abandon him. He and Kagami attempt a rescue despite Orochimaru’s order to retreat; only Jiraiya returns, while Kagami is captured. 64 65 67
Jiraiya later opposes sending Yuzuru, Akeshi, and Maple on a high-risk mission against the Hidden Rain Village, regarding the younger shinobi as insufficiently experienced for such enemies. 69 71
During the subsequent confrontation with the Rain forces, Jiraiya enters Sage Mode to confront Kou. His Sage Art: Goemon seriously injures Kou but cannot overcome Kou’s enhanced resilience, forcing Jiraiya to retreat with Orochimaru and Tsunade. 83 84
Intercepted by Hanzō while protecting his exhausted comrades, Jiraiya refuses to flee alone. With Fukasaku and Shima’s assistance, he defeats Hanzō through Sage Art: Demonic Illusion: Toad Song. Xuanming then emerges as Hanzō’s temporary contracted Divine Beast, captures Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade, and sends Gamabunta back to Mount Myōboku. 85 86
Appearance
Jiraiya is a white-haired man. During his battle with Hanzō, his Sage Mode gives his face pronounced toad-like features and markings. 34 84
- White hair. 34
- Sage Mode produces dense bumps and distinctive facial markings. 84
- Suffers a rib injury after Tsunade strikes him during Yuzuru and Orochimaru’s sparring match. 41
Personality
Jiraiya is playful, lecherous, and frequently irresponsible in casual situations. He exposes Nawaki to adult material, openly stares at Tsunade, and once shifts a mission onto Orochimaru so he can prepare Tsunade’s birthday gift. 39 40
Beneath this behavior, he is deeply compassionate toward comrades. He sympathizes with Hiruko’s inability to keep pace with stronger peers, attempts to save Kato Dan despite the danger, and refuses Orochimaru’s suggestion to escape without Tsunade and Orochimaru. 63 65 85
His experiences with Dan and Kagami leave him unwilling to repeat a retreat he considers regrettable. When Hanzō threatens his injured allies, Jiraiya chooses to remain and fight despite the risk to himself. 67 85
