Background

The Unsullied are Astapor’s elite slave soldiers. They are castrated in childhood and endure ten years of training, learning three spear disciplines and their associated formations. Their training is deliberately lethal: candidates are forced through brutal eliminations, including the killing of infants and dogs. 202 204

From the day of their castration, they drink “Courage Wine” with every meal. The mixture gradually numbs their senses and gives them the Fearless ability, rendering them immune to pain. It does not make them immune to injury or death. 99

Their prestige is heavily associated with the “Three Thousand of Qohor,” but Ian argues that Astapor’s sales narrative exaggerates the feat: Qohor had surviving defenders, prepared positions, and Dothraki opponents already weakened by earlier fighting and depleted arrows. 203 204

Ian initially dismisses an individual Unsullied data card as strategically insignificant, reasoning that their greatest strength lies in massed formations rather than individual combat. He later makes acquiring Astapor’s Unsullied the centerpiece of his Slaver’s Bay strategy. 99 108

Spear Mastery and Formations

Unsullied are trained to use three distinct spear types and switch formations according to the battlefield role required. 203

Discipline and Obedience

Unsullied are trained to fight and obey rather than think independently. Blue Maggot accepts Ian’s instructions largely because Astapor had taught him obedience, not independent judgment. 172

History

Ian purchases 8,000 Unsullied from Astapor for 96,000 Gold Dragons. During the ceremony in Punishment Plaza, he rides through their formations holding the Harpy’s Finger as command is transferred; Daenerys recognizes that the army is now hers. 210

Kraznys later attempts to use the Harpy’s Finger to order the Unsullied to seize Femor and the Astapori nobles. The soldiers remain motionless because Femor had preserved his own authority over the 600 men he personally trained. 212

After Astapor’s internal struggle, Ian uses 3,000 Unsullied under Roar and Bronn to suppress resistance on the eastern bank of the Worm River. The operation secures farmland, pastures, logging camps, quarries, mines, and a large slave population. 214

Ian also discovers 6,000 “half-finished” Unsullied whose training is three years from completion. Rather than continue Astapor’s traditional eliminations, he considers them already elite enough for military service and uses them as the foundation of the Ghis First Legion. 217
