Background / History

Yae Sakura was born into a Shrine Maiden family in Yae Village of Shinano during the Warring States era. Her inherited bloodline allowed her to communicate with gods. She had a frail younger sister, Rin, and was raised to regard ritual duty as her predetermined purpose; this gradually left her feeling like a puppet defined solely by the role of Shrine Maiden. 4

While living in Yae Village, Sakura met Kallen Kaslana and Ye Ming by the village river. During a mission to hunt a corruption-infected beast, she was overwhelmed by an enemy beyond her expectations. Ye Ming intervened emotionally, insisting that she could rely on him and Kallen rather than facing everything alone. His support gave Sakura a sense of salvation and restored her desire to live for herself. 4

Her happiness with Ye Ming and Kallen ended when Ye Ming’s chronic illness worsened. He eventually died after suffering severe coughing and vomiting blood; Okita Souji later identified the illness as tuberculosis. 4 7

After arriving in the modern world, Sakura retained both her memories and her Valkyrie powers. She spent roughly three months quietly observing and guarding Ye Ming, whom she recognized as her beloved despite his apparent loss of past memories and supernatural power.
