Background / History

Eye of the Moon Plan

Madara operates from underground ruins while physically deteriorating, relying on the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and Hashirama Cells to survive. He has already entrusted his Rinnegan to Nagato and is preparing the Eye of the Moon Plan, which requires a successor to gather the Tailed Beasts and eventually revive him. 118 204

After learning that ten-year-old Uchiha Katsuo possesses the Mangekyo Sharingan, Susanoo, and the strength to defeat the Third Raikage, Madara considers him an ideal executor for his plan. He orders Black Zetsu to investigate Katsuo but hesitates to recruit him directly because Katsuo is too powerful, violent, and difficult to control. 118 125

Conflict with Katsuo

Madara gives Katsuo a recently harvested Three-Tomoe Sharingan and a scroll containing the hand-seal sequence for absorbing its dōjutsu power. He suggests that further Sharingan power could restore Katsuo’s damaged eye, intending to tempt him into a path of ruthless power accumulation. 132

Their encounter escalates into battle. Madara manifests a blue, four-armed Susanoo and uses Yasaka Magatama against Katsuo’s black Susanoo; although he survives Katsuo’s assault and a Tailed Beast Bomb, he is injured and resorts to Wood Release against Matatabi. 133 134

Madara later comes to admire Katsuo rather than resent him, believing Katsuo accomplished what he himself could not: overwhelming Konoha through force. He compares Katsuo’s ambition and ruthlessness to his own. 204

Death, Reanimation, and Resurrection

Before dying, Madara transfers his name and will to Obito, ordering him to act as his proxy while Black Zetsu prepares to revive him. 247

After Obito’s death, Black Zetsu uses Impure World Reincarnation to return Madara temporarily. Madara then revives Obito as an Edo Tensei and uses the Human Path to search his soul, learning that Katsuo knows the Eye of the Moon Plan, Mangekyo Sharingan weaknesses, and other secrets that should have been hidden. 273 274 275

Black Zetsu later controls Nagato into using the Outer Path’s Rebirth Technique. Madara regains a youthful living body, reclaims his Rinnegan from Nagato, absorbs Dragon Vein power, and revives the Ten-Tails. 317

Infinite Tsukuyomi and Defeat

Madara prepares the Eye of the Moon Plan by using the Ten-Tails and Infinite Tsukuyomi to force the world into an artificial peace. He sends White Zetsu to disrupt the major villages while conserving his own strength for Katsuo’s eventual intervention. 319

He battles Konoha’s forces, including Minato, Hashirama, Tobirama, and Uchiha Sage practitioners. Madara initially underestimates them, then overwhelms their elite fighters with Limbo Shadows and releases the restrained Ten-Tails. 320 321 322 323

After becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, Madara activates Infinite Tsukuyomi. Katsuo awakens from seclusion, wounds him with the Three Calamity Instant Slash Technique, and removes both Madara’s Nine Tomoe Rinne Sharingan and Ten-Tails power after Black Zetsu betrays him. 325 332 333

Alliance Against the Otsutsuki

Rather than execute Madara, Katsuo offers him a new purpose: joining an interstellar campaign against the Otsutsuki Clan. Madara ultimately remains with Katsuo and Kaguya after regaining his freedom and Rinne Sharingan. 335 345

Madara gradually sets aside his pride and asks Katsuo to teach him true Sage Arts. He accepts that learning them would require abandoning his chakra cultivation and Ten-Tails power, intending to begin only after the Otsutsuki conflict if he survives. 416

Appearance

Madara’s appearance changes repeatedly through death, reanimation, resurrection, and transformations. In his final elderly years, he is emaciated, partially fused with White Zetsu-like Hashirama Cells, and impaled by black rods connected to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. After resurrection, he regains a youthful body. 204 317

  • Possesses a blue Susanoo with four arms in his earlier battle with Katsuo. 133
  • As a Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, wears Sage robes and manifests Truth-Seeking Balls and a Sage Staff. 325 333
  • Later bears a Golden Rinnegan and a Nine Tomoe Rinne Sharingan following eye transplantation. 438

Personality

Madara is proud, contemptuous of perceived weakness, and accustomed to treating other shinobi as beneath him. He dismisses Minato’s Flying Thunder God as little more than an escape technique and initially refers to Konoha’s assembled elites as “small fries.” 320

He is also patient and strategically minded. He delays direct assaults when he lacks certainty about Katsuo’s strength, analyzes unfamiliar dōjutsu in battle, and uses his Limbo Shadows creatively to break spatial confinement and hinder escape. 125 319 429 432

His pursuit of peace is sincere but authoritarian: Madara believes the Infinite Tsukuyomi can create lasting peace by imposing a dream world on everyone. 321 322

After repeated defeats and exposure to Katsuo’s Sage Arts, Madara becomes more self-critical. He recognizes that his pride has limited him, bows to Katsuo as a wiser teacher, and accepts the need to continue learning. 416

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan, Rinnegan, and Six Paths Techniques

Madara’s dōjutsu forms the core of his combat style, granting access to the Rinnegan’s Six Paths abilities and advanced ocular techniques.

  • Uses the Preta Path to absorb large-scale Fire Release attacks. 321
  • Uses the Human Path to seize and search Obito’s soul for hidden memories. 274
  • Uses the Naraka Path as a threat of eternal torment to force Obito’s cooperation. 274
  • Reclaims his Rinnegan from Nagato after being resurrected. 317
  • His eyes and spatial techniques can be affected by superior Otsutsuki dōjutsu, including spatial confinement and time manipulation. 427 429

Limbo

Madara creates invisible shadows in a separate space to strike opponents who cannot perceive or defend against them.

  • Uses Limbo to sever Tobirama’s Edo Tensei body and incapacitate Konoha’s elite fighters. 323
  • Can project a distant Limbo Shadow outside Yuchen Otsutsuki’s spatial confinement, allowing him to break her seal from the outside. 429
  • In God Realm, his Limbo Shadows become faster, stronger, and more numerous. 430
  • His shadows can be temporarily frozen by time-based ocular techniques. 432

Susanoo

Madara can manifest several Susanoo stages, from a blue four-armed form to Complete Body and semi-ultimate forms.

  • His blue Susanoo uses Yasaka Magatama as a long-range attack. 133
  • His Complete Body Susanoo fights Hashirama’s Wood Golem and serves as a major battlefield weapon. 321 322
  • His semi-ultimate Susanoo is approximately 600 meters tall but is heavily damaged by Number Ten’s Tailed Beast Bomb. 325
  • Katsuo’s Kamui can twist and destroy Madara’s Complete Body Susanoo. 280

Wood Release

Madara employs powerful Wood Release techniques inherited through Hashirama Cells.

  • Wood Dragon Technique restrains and suppresses Matatabi. 134
  • Deep Forest Emergence creates rapidly multiplying trees that overwhelm Katsuo’s conventional attacks. 134
  • Flower Forest Emergence produces poisonous flower buds that threaten the wider battlefield. 322

Ten-Tails Jinchuriki Mode

After sealing the Ten-Tails into himself, Madara gains a Six Paths transformation commonly called Sage Madara.

  • Gains Truth-Seeking Balls, a Sage Staff, tremendous regeneration, and the power to withstand Tailed Beast attacks. 325 326
  • Activates the Infinite Tsukuyomi to place the world under a dream genjutsu. 332
  • Can lose this power if the Ten-Tails chakra is extracted; Katsuo strips him of it after Black Zetsu’s betrayal. 333
  • His Ten-Tails power later becomes inert during the Otsutsuki battle, severely reducing his combat level. 456

Golden Rinnegan: Spatial Confinement

Madara receives a Golden Rinnegan through transplantation and gains the ability to immobilize targets by sealing their surrounding space.

  • Uses the technique to stop Kōshiki and Yangshiki Otsutsuki long enough for Katsuo to act. 456
  • The ability consumes dōjutsu power rapidly when restraining several powerful targets at once. 456
  • Its effectiveness can be weakened when the affected space is shattered. 453

Haki

In later battles, Madara wields the three colors of Haki and manifests a distinctive Crimson Haki.

  • Opens a duel with Katsuo using Conqueror’s Haki. 412
  • Uses Armament Haki in prolonged close-quarters combat. 413
  • Learns Observation Kill, allowing him to interfere with an opponent’s Observation Haki. 413
  • His Crimson Haki manifests as a fierce tiger. 413
