In 1996, Kyoto, Island Nation, a pickup truck slowly drove down a country road on the outskirts.
The pickup's driver hummed a tune leisurely, enjoying this brief moment of peace away from the Zenin Family.
In the cargo bed at the back, a small head poked out from beneath a black plastic sheet, quietly observing the surroundings.
"It's around here."
With that, the black plastic sheet was carefully lifted. A Child who looked only six or seven years old stood up, clutching a bag nearly as large as himself. His eyes fixed nervously on the river beneath a narrow bridge not far ahead.
"Three, two, one, jump!"
Before the pickup reached the bridge, the Child hurled the bag in his hands off the truck with all his strength, then seized the moment and jumped into the river himself.
"Pfft—cough, cough. Good thing I learned how to swim in college."
The Child's name was Eiji. He was a transmigrator.
What depressed him, however, was that he had transmigrated into the Zenin Family from Jujutsu Kaisen.
There were plenty of hellish starting points in Jujutsu Kaisen, and Eiji had landed in one of them: being reincarnated into the Zenin Family without awakening a Technique.
People like that had only two possible outcomes in the Zenin Family:
The first was becoming a servant with a status lower than cattle, living out the rest of their lives in numb resignation.
The second was rising up in rebellion, after which either the rebel or the Zenin Family would disappear.
Cases like Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zenin were exceedingly rare in the Zenin Family's history. If Naobito Zenin had not been the most open-minded clan head the Zenin Family had ever had, Toji Fushiguro would likely have wiped out the entire family himself. Maki Zenin would never have gotten the chance.
Though Toji Fushiguro might not have been able to slaughter the entire Zenin Family alone in a direct battle, his combat instincts were incredibly sharp.
If he first dealt with Naobito Zenin, Ogi Zenin, and the others through assassination, the rest would pose no threat.
That was also why the Zenin Family driver had been taking his time on the road.
Who would willingly return early to the Zenin Family to be treated like a dog when they could stay outside a little longer?
Still, that had made Eiji's escape much easier.
After climbing ashore, Eiji found the bag he had thrown out. He changed into a clean set of clothes and headed toward the station in the outskirts.
Once he removed the clothes and the thin blanket wrapped around the outside for cushioning, the large bag contained only a small shoulder bag.
It was not that Eiji did not want to take more. His body was simply too young, and carrying too much would severely affect his mobility.
Eiji needed to find somewhere to hide for the night, then take the Train to Osaka the next morning before looking for a chance to get to Tokyo.
The Zenin Family's roots in Kyoto ran too deep. Their eyes and ears were practically everywhere.
A year ago, when Eiji had first escaped from the Zenin Family, he had been caught and taken back in less than three days.
The reason was that the shop where he bought food had been a Zenin Family business. After the owner reported him, two men quickly followed Eiji's trail and captured him.
At that moment, Eiji had bitterly hated himself for never learning counter-surveillance techniques in his previous life.
But what college student learned counter-surveillance techniques for no reason?
So after the people sent to capture him kicked him half to death, Eiji was dragged back to the Zenin Family.
If Eiji had not been only six at the time and still had a chance of awakening a Technique, he would likely have died under the Zenin Family's punishment.
Those who are not Zenin are not Jujutsu Sorcerers. Those who are not Jujutsu Sorcerers are not human.
This was the creed the Zenin Family had always believed in. Under such a creed, the Zenin Family was a true den of demons for ordinary family members without Techniques or strength.
Had he been indoctrinated with such beliefs from childhood, Eiji might have become numb like the others. But having received a red education in his previous life, he simply could not accept such a worldview. So after his mother committed suicide, he immediately ran away.
The experience of being beaten half to death after failing had not frightened Eiji. Instead, it had strengthened his resolve to escape.
Inside an abandoned shack not far from the station, Eiji looked with satisfaction at the place where he planned to spend the night.
The shack had not been abandoned for long. With a proper cleanup, it could even be lived in for an extended period.
More importantly, the station was nearby. Beside it was an old residential complex, complete with shops and other facilities.
Still, to be safe, it was best not to get too close to the residential complex.
Yet life was always full of surprises. Just as Eiji curled up in a corner and prepared to sleep, a voice outside left him stunned.
"Is this the place, Tarou?"
The sudden voice made Eiji's heart jolt.
"That's right. According to the Technique's feedback, that brat should be inside."
Outside, Zen'in Tarou held a Yukata in his hands. The Cursed Energy emanating from it pointed directly toward where Eiji was hiding.
"How is that possible? They caught up already?"
What Eiji did not know was that his previous escape had already put the Zenin Family on alert. If he had not been a Child, he might have disappeared from this world back then.
Having passed six without awakening a Technique, Eiji had little value in the Zenin Family. Combined with the fact that this was not his first escape attempt—
The Zenin Family had already decided to dispose of Eiji as soon as possible to uphold the family rules.
"That's the Yukata I wore during Family Study and while doing chores in the daytime?"
This was bad. Was it a Technique that could locate a person through their belongings?
Although Eiji had not awakened as a Jujutsu Sorcerer and could not see the effects of Cursed Energy, he knew a little about the bizarre abilities of Jujutsu Sorcerers.
Techniques were the unusual powers wielded by Jujutsu Sorcerers in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.
A Jujutsu Sorcerer's Technique was generally innate, and it was nearly impossible to comprehend one through later training or other means.
That was why they were called Innate Techniques.
Nearly impossible did not mean completely impossible, however. There were also ways in this world to gain a Technique later in life, such as Itadori.
Of course, some people possessed no Technique at all and instead relied solely on Cursed Energy and learned skills to Exorcise Cursed Spirits.
Kusokabe of the New Shadow Style was a prime example.
Barrier Techniques and certain Techniques used to command Shikigami could also be learned later.
In this world, having an Innate Technique did not necessarily mean one could use it. One also needed a brain capable of using a Technique.
In the original story, Junpei Yoshino possessed both a Technique and Cursed Energy, but his brain lacked the structure needed to use the Technique.
Therefore, before Mahito used Idle Transfiguration to alter Junpei Yoshino's brain structure, Junpei Yoshino could not use his Technique.
Cursed Energy originated from the Negative Emotions of Jujutsu Sorcerers. They needed to constantly train, extracting and accumulating Cursed Energy from those Negative Emotions while maintaining a stable output in battle.
Maybe that was why Jujutsu Sorcerers in this world were all a little insane.
With even the power they used being so negative, it was no surprise people went mad.
"Damn it, with such a useful ability, why not become a cop? Why be a dog for the Zenin Family?"
Eiji said angrily.
Pushing off with both hands, Eiji sprang to his feet, grabbed the small bag beside him, and ran toward the Window.
"That little bastard is still trying to run! Because of you trash, I have to work overtime again!"
Seeing Eiji run toward the back of the shack through the front Window, Yota Zenin snarled furiously.
Lu Xun once said: When the strong are angry, they raise their blades against those stronger than themselves. When the weak are angry, they raise their blades against those weaker than themselves.
Yota Zenin was that kind of person. And not just Yota Zenin—Naoya Zenin and the others who would later bully Maki and Mai were the same.
Under the influence of the Zenin Family's twisted ideals, everyone had their place in the hierarchy. Eiji, whose parents were both dead and who had not awakened a Technique, was undoubtedly at the very bottom.
Seeing Yota burst through the door, Eiji kicked a box from the corner straight at Yota Zenin's face.
"You bastard!"
"Argh! I'll kill you!"
The box contained dirt, dust, and broken stones Eiji had swept up while cleaning the room. There had been no trash can, so he had put them in the box. Now, they unexpectedly proved quite useful.
While Yota Zenin and Zen'in Tarou were blinded by sand and gravel, Eiji quickly climbed out through the rear Window and ran toward the bridge that crossed the Train tracks.
Beyond that bridge was a densely populated residential complex. He could use the people there to slow Yota Zenin and Zen'in Tarou down, and then...
Then he would take it one step at a time. If he could not shake off his pursuers, what point was there in thinking about what came next? He would definitely be thrown into a nest of Cursed Spirits as an example to others.
Casting aside the distracting thoughts in his mind, Eiji began sprinting at full speed. Yota Zenin and Zen'in Tarou rapidly closed in behind him.
Just as Eiji was about to get off the bridge, three strange figures came into view.
"More reinforcements?"
Eiji panicked. There were two people behind him and three more in front of him. He felt that he was doomed.
Gritting his teeth, Eiji fixed a determined gaze ahead, ready to make one last stand. It was then that he clearly saw the three people before him.
There was a Child with short white hair and a pair of sky-blue eyes, along with two burly men with gentle expressions who looked like Bodyguards.
"Satoru Gojo?"
Just as Eiji stared in shock, a strange force swept all six people on the scene into its grasp.
