Background / History
Yuanshi encountered the newly transmigrated Ye Qing in the Great Desolation and initially intended to bring him to Kunlun as a boy attendant. After Ye Qing's respectful explanation of the term “Master,” Yuanshi divined their future master-disciple connection, accepted him as a disciple, and named him Nan Ji 1.
At Kunlun, Yuanshi presented Nan Ji to Laozi and Tongtian. Nan Ji's deference and gratitude for the Three Pure Ones Primordial Scripture convinced all three to recognize him as the first disciple of the Three Pure Ones 1 2.
Yuanshi helped establish Xuanqing Peak as the Three Pure Ones' Daoist dojo. When Nan Ji was injured attempting to breach its guardian array, Yuanshi arrived through a divine-sense connection he had left on his disciple, sternly reprimanding Nan Ji while ensuring his safety 3. After the Three Pure Ones broke the formation, Yuanshi shared in the discovery of the Verdant Creation Lotus and Chaos Spirit Fluid beneath Kirin Cliff 4.
Following Nan Ji's refinement of the lotus into treasures for his elders, Yuanshi contributed a drop of his vital blood to refine the Soul Slaying Staff, despite the strain it placed on him 5. He later received the Jade Ruyi created from the same lotus 5.
Yuanshi became a formal disciple of Hongjun Dao Ancestor after Hongjun's sermon at Purple Heaven Palace 27. He subsequently made Jade Void Palace the central residence of the Jade Void Dao Field built by Nan Ji on Xuanqing Peak 18.
Appearance
Yuanshi first appears as a middle-aged man 1.
- Carries a composed, severe bearing.
- Is typically expressionless or cold-faced when displeased.
- His demeanor visibly softens when dealing with Nan Ji or receiving proof of his disciple's filial devotion 18 20.
Personality
Yuanshi places exceptional importance on etiquette, decorum, and proper conduct. Ye Qing's respectful address and understanding of the master-disciple bond were decisive in Yuanshi accepting him as Nan Ji 1. He is highly conscious of appearances and initially resents actions that seem to undermine his standing, though he repeatedly chooses to support Nan Ji over minor concerns of face 20 22.
He is intensely protective of his disciple. Yuanshi leaves divine sense on Nan Ji for protection, intervenes when Nan Ji is endangered, helps refine the Soul Slaying Staff with his own vital blood, and openly distinguishes Nan Ji from others when discussing his cultivation and behavior 3 5 9 13.
Yuanshi is stern and exacting toward Tongtian, frequently criticizing his impulsiveness, laxity, and handling of disciples. Their disagreements can escalate into arguments and physical confrontations, but Yuanshi's anger is generally rooted in responsibility and concern for their shared standing 3 24 31 47.
