Background / History

Tongtian was already living on Kunlun Mountain with Laozi and Yuanshi when Yuanshi returned with the newly transformed celestial crane Nan Ji. He initially judged Nan Ji’s origins favorably but called him “a bit dull”; despite his bluntness, his complaint that Nan Ji had received no protective treasure reflected genuine concern for his new martial nephew. Tongtian ultimately joined his brothers in recognizing Nan Ji as the Three Pure Ones’ first disciple. 1 2

When the Three Pure Ones claimed Xuanqing Peak as their Dao field, Tongtian helped break its mountain-protecting formation. He later received the Qingping Sword from Nan Ji, who refined the Twenty-Four-Petal Verdant Creation Lotus into treasures for his three elders. 4 5

Tongtian repeatedly clashed with Yuanshi over disciples. Acting on impulse, he brought seven creatures from the East Sea back to Kunlun; after being confronted by his brothers and later learning that they had misrepresented Nan Ji’s treatment of them, he kept them only as attendant boys and withheld the Three Pure Ones Primordial Scripture and Yellow Court Scripture. 30 31 33

Nan Ji later brought Zhao Gongming, Yunxiao, Bixiao, and Qiongxiao to Kunlun as more suitable candidates. Tongtian formally accepted them, then elevated all four to personal disciples after Hongjun instructed him to protect Qiongxiao. He personally taught them the Shangqing mental cultivation method and gave individual sermons. 40 42

Personality

Tongtian is outspoken, impulsive, and competitive, often speaking before considering Yuanshi’s reaction. His attempts to challenge Yuanshi’s decisions, take disciples without preparation, or make flippant remarks regularly result in arguments or punishment. 24 30 31 47

Behind his unruly behavior, Tongtian is affectionate and emotionally invested in those close to him. He worried when Nan Ji was absent for five hundred years, was enraged when Ancestor Dragon threatened him, and accepted the Three Xiaos and Zhao Gongming as personal disciples partly so Qiongxiao would not be separated from her siblings. 24 35 42

He is also sensitive to Hongjun’s authority. After casually eating offerings placed before Hongjun’s statue, he was pulled into Purple Heaven Palace and subjected to Hongjun’s sarcastic “teaching,” leaving him far more cautious about his master. 31 32

Shangqing Cultivation and Teaching

Tongtian derived the Shangqing mental cultivation method from the Three Pure Ones Primordial Scripture and taught it directly to his four personal disciples. 42
