Background / History
As the eldest of the Three Pure Ones, Laozi approved Yuanshi's decision to accept Nan Ji as a disciple after assessing the celestial crane's origins and connection to Yuanshi. He praised Nan Ji's conduct and accepted the latter's formal respects as a martial nephew 1.
Laozi personally transmitted the Three Pure Ones Primordial Scripture to Nan Ji. After Nan Ji declined compensation for the Three Pure Ones' lack of protective treasures and expressed gratitude for their guidance, Laozi declared him the Three Pure Ones' first disciple with Yuanshi and Tongtian's agreement 2.
At Xuanqing Peak, Laozi recognized that the location was fated to become the Three Pure Ones' Daoist dojo. He joined his brothers in breaking its Innate Guardian Array and later used the Chaos Spirit Spring to temper his Primordial Spirit 3 4. In recognition of Nan Ji's restraint in refusing the spring water, Laozi supported giving him the Twenty-Four-Petal Verdant Creation Lotus 4.
Nan Ji later refined the lotus into three treasures and gave one staff to Laozi. Though moved by the gift, Laozi accepted it after sensing its Heavenly Dao-ordained connection to him 5. He also entrusted Nan Ji with the Heaven and Earth Mysterious Yellow Exquisite Pagoda while the Three Pure Ones recovered from the exertion of empowering the Soul Slaying Staff 6.
After Nan Ji built the Jade Void Dao Field, Laozi named Yuanshi's central palace Jade Void Palace and accepted Nan Ji's name for his own residence, Eight Sceneries Palace 18. Within that palace, Laozi advised Nan Ji that the chief disciple's destiny was tied to the Three Pure Ones and entrusted him with mediating the future disagreements between Yuanshi and Tongtian 19.
Laozi refined and sealed Pangu's essence blood within Nan Ji's Soul Slaying Staff rather than allowing Nan Ji to use it immediately to reshape his body. The seal both safeguarded the essence blood and strengthened the staff 19 35.
At the Purple Heaven Palace, Hongjun accepted Laozi, Yuanshi, Tongtian, and Nuwa as disciples after his sermon on the realm above Da Luo 27. Laozi later received the Purple Gold Gourd and the four banana fans Nan Ji had asked him to refine, promising to find Nan Ji a better treasure in return 22 24.
Appearance
Laozi is depicted with an elderly appearance and a beard, which he frequently strokes while observing others or considering a matter 1 17 24.
- Often wears a calm or faintly smiling expression when speaking to Nan Ji 1 17.
- His normally placid demeanor can turn stern when Tongtian's conduct threatens the Three Pure Ones' dignity or Nan Ji's safety 28.
Personality
Laozi is composed, observant, and deliberate. He evaluates Nan Ji's conduct before acting, values proper etiquette, and favors measured decisions over impulsive conflict 1 2 19. His understanding of the Dao is reflected in his naming of the Jade Void Dao Field and his inclination toward the Way of Non-Action 18.
Though often quiet, Laozi is deeply protective of Nan Ji. He gives the young disciple cultivation guidance, lends him powerful treasures, refines his artifacts, and explains the responsibilities that accompany the Three Pure Ones' protection 6 19 24. He also acts as a stabilizing force between Yuanshi and Tongtian, warning others not to intervene recklessly when their conflict must be resolved by the brothers themselves 47.
Laozi has a dry, understated sense of humor. He laughed when Nan Ji jokingly requested the Heaven and Earth Mysterious Yellow Exquisite Pagoda after gifting him the banana fans, calling him a “little rascal” 24.
