Background
Ace was raised in Dadan’s mountain bandit household and regarded Garp as his grandfather. When he first met Mo Xingchen, he accepted him as an uncle after Garp’s encouragement. 44
Mo Xingchen told Ace that both of his parents were dead, describing his mother as a great parent and his father as a hero to his comrades but an unqualified husband and father. Ace later learns that his father was Pirate King Gol D. Roger, while his mother, Portgas D. Rouge, delayed his birth for twenty-two months to evade the World Government’s purge of Roger’s descendants. 45 250
He grew up alongside Monkey D. Luffy. Garp arranged literacy, life-skills, and physical training for the boys through Bogard and Marine soldiers. 46
Appearance
Ace is first depicted as a black-haired child with freckles across his face. As a pirate, he is recognized by his cowboy hat and freckled appearance; by the time he returns to Marineford after the Summit War, he wears a captain’s coat reminiscent of Whitebeard’s and bears scars from battle. 44 151 280
- Black hair and prominent freckles. 44
- Commonly wears a cowboy hat. 151
- Later wears a captain’s coat similar to Whitebeard’s. 280
- Accumulates visible scars through repeated New World battles. 280
Personality
Ace is fiercely independent. As a child, he rejects Shanks’ invitation to join the Red Hair Pirates, declaring that he will begin his own legendary career rather than follow another captain. 106
He is compassionate toward civilians and gathers many future Spade Pirates after rescuing them from oppressive nobles. His hostility toward nobles earns him a bounty, but Marine intelligence considers his underlying nature kind despite his extreme methods. 146 202
Ace is also impulsive, proud, and prone to provoking stronger opponents. He confronts Doflamingo on the latter’s territory, openly taunts Katakuri while badly injured, and repeatedly challenges Whitebeard despite being effortlessly overpowered. 147 212 216
His loyalty is equally pronounced. He stays behind to let his crew escape from Katakuri, defends the Whitebeard Pirates before Mo Xingchen, and initially pursues Teach after Thatch’s murder. 210 225 238
Abilities & Skills
Flame-Flame Fruit
Ace is a Logia-type Flame-Flame Fruit user who can create, control, and transform into fire. 146 148
- Can elementalize to let ordinary attacks pass through him; Vergo’s initial staff strike splits his body without injury. 148
- Uses flames for ranged attacks, including fireballs, Fire Spear, and Divine Fire: Igniting Fire. 148 158
- Propels himself with flames from his feet for sudden bursts of speed and aerial repositioning. 148 159
- Creates defensive fire walls with Flame Barrier. 158
- Uses Great Flame Ring: Fire Emperor, a massive fireball attack that Mo Xingchen deflects with ease. 159
- Learns to prioritize flame temperature over raw impact; his refined flames can melt steel on contact. 160 162
- Produces white flames during his battle with Katakuri, including Divine Flame: Jade Break. 212
- Seastone suppresses his strength, while Teach’s darkness can absorb or negate Devil Fruit-based attacks. 152 245
Haki
Ace possesses all three forms of Haki, though his Armament Haki initially lags behind stronger opponents. 148 158 160

- Observation Haki — Detects danger from Vergo’s Haki-coated strikes and perceives Law’s ability field during training. 148 158
- Armament Haki — Awakens through Seastone conditioning and sparring with Law; coats his attacks against Katakuri and Teach. 158 212 245
Physical Combat and Mobility
Even when unable to rely on his Devil Fruit, Ace remains agile and resilient.
- Dodges Isca’s rapier attacks while restrained by Seastone, though he is ultimately injured. 155
- Combines fire-propelled movement with punches, kicks, and Haki-coated strikes. 159 245
- Switches to a trade-blow-for-blow strategy after recognizing Katakuri’s future sight. 210
- Endures Katakuri’s sustained assault and continues fighting despite severe injuries. 212 213

Story Role / Major Arcs
Formation of the Spade Pirates
After setting out independently, Ace rescues civilians and victims of noble oppression across the seas. His actions attract followers who become the Spade Pirates, while his killings of World Government-affiliated nobles make him a wanted pirate. 146 147
Conflict with the Donquixote Family
Ace enters Doflamingo’s territory near Sabaody and refuses both recruitment and intimidation. He reveals his Conqueror’s Haki, fights Vergo, and invokes Mo Xingchen’s name to force Doflamingo to contact his uncle. 147 148 149
Training Journey with Mo Xingchen and Law
Mo Xingchen joins the Spade Pirates’ voyage without interfering in Ace’s choices, then uses Seastone restraints and Law’s sparring to force Ace’s Armament Haki awakening. He later teaches Ace to develop the Flame-Flame Fruit through heat rather than brute-force spectacle. 152 158 160 162
Recruitment by the Four Emperors
Ace’s 500 million Belly bounty makes him a target for Whitebeard and Big Mom. Katakuri attempts to recruit him, then nearly kills him when he refuses; Marco intervenes, heals Ace, and introduces him to the Whitebeard Pirates. 163 210 213
Ace initially refuses Whitebeard’s invitation and repeatedly attacks him in an attempt to prove himself. He eventually joins the Whitebeard Pirates and becomes the Second Division Captain. 215 217 225 248
Pursuit of Teach and the Summit War
After Teach murders Thatch, Ace pursues him. Teach’s darkness negates Ace’s Devil Fruit advantage, while Doc Q’s poison incapacitates Ace; Teach then exposes his lineage and trades him to the World Government. 238 245 248
At Marineford, Ace initially accepts his expected execution. Mo Xingchen forces him to confront the consequences his death would have for Garp, Luffy, Whitebeard, and his crew, leading Ace to choose life and vow to personally settle matters with Teach. 250 262
Postwar New World Campaign
After Whitebeard’s death, Ace gathers most of the remaining Whitebeard Pirates and roams the New World to hunt Teach rather than claim territory. He later brokers a meeting among Shanks, Kaido, and Charlotte Linlin, contributing to the collapse of the Kaido–Big Mom alliance. 278
Ace later appears at Marineford with Shanks and Kaido to discuss the New World Sea Train project, having become the nominal leader of their cooperative arrangement. 280
