Background / History

Luffy was raised between Windmill Village and Dadan's mountain-bandit base alongside Ace. Garp and Mo Xingchen placed the boys in Dadan's care, while Dadan brought them to Makino for cultural education; Luffy also trained in the mountains with Ace from a young age. By the age of seven, he could defeat an adult man. 52 53 105

He befriended Shanks after recognizing that the Red Hair Pirates treated villagers well and did not resemble the cruel pirates described by Garp. When bandit king Sig insulted Shanks, Luffy stood on a stool to demand an apology despite being only seven or eight years old. 105 106

Shanks taught Luffy that the Pirate King was the freest person on the sea. Luffy immediately embraced the goal of becoming Pirate King, made a pinky promise to compete with Shanks, and received Shanks' straw hat as a pledge to return once he achieved that dream. 106 107
