Background / History
Four thousand years ago, Ovakain hatched in the Great Swamp where the Hoss Mountains met the Dili Plains. As one of many abandoned chromatic dragon eggs, he would likely have been eaten by magical creatures if an elderly half-dragon Priest had not recognized and rescued him. Rejecting the prejudice that Black Dragons were inherently evil, the Priest named him Ovakain and told him: “You will be a good dragon.” 380
Ovakain grew up concealed within the Priest’s half-dragon tribe. The Priest taught the hot-tempered young dragon magic and entrusted him with a dream: allow the cursed half-dragons to live freely rather than survive through plunder and isolation. After the Priest’s death, Ovakain inherited that purpose and eventually completed Breaking the Cage. 380
Three centuries before the events surrounding Punk’s mission, Ovakain emerged as the leader of the isolated half-dragon tribe in the Hoss Mountains. Under his leadership, the tribe developed into the Dragon Roar Kingdom. 325
Appearance
Ovakain’s true form is a colossal Black Dragon with densely packed scales, immense claws, wings, and a maw capable of projecting compressed corrosive Dragon Breath. His scales can show a faint golden sheen under sunlight. 354 357 377
When severely wounded, he uses Greater Polymorph to assume the form of a slender human youth.
- Short, choppy black hair.
- Handsome face and a lean but resilient build.
- Usually wears a thin, ornate long robe in human form.
- Finds his human body uncomfortable: it lacks wings, scales, Dragon Breath, and most of his natural regeneration. 388
Personality
Ovakain is a Lawful Good Black Dragon whose morality was shaped by the half-dragon Priest who raised him rather than by his chromatic lineage. He is compassionate toward innocents, regards the half-dragon tribe as his family, and feels personally responsible for protecting the sanctuary and kingdom built from his guardian’s dream. 380 401
He is also proud, stubborn, and emotionally intense. Even while fleeing Punk and suffering severe soul injuries, he refuses to accept a humiliating death by thirst or surrender. 388 His instinct to help others repeatedly overrides caution; he recognizes this weakness himself but cannot ignore suffering he witnesses. 435
After the destruction of the Dragon Roar Kingdom, grief and guilt harden into a desire for revenge against Punk and the Nightmare Cult. He becomes willing to enter an apparent trap rather than remain inactive while innocent people are harmed. 401 438
Abilities & Skills
Dragon Breath
Ovakain’s primary offensive weapon is a highly corrosive dark-green Dragon Breath, compressed into an extremely narrow beam.
- Can reduce matter and energy in its path to ash.
- Cuts through distant terrain even when it misses its intended target.
- Its speed and penetration increase when Ovakain is enraged.
- Cannot be used continuously; its expenditure leaves openings in battle. 357 377 378
Dragon Might
As a colossal Black Dragon, Ovakain can overwhelm weaker beings with Dragon Might.
- Paralyzes most common professionals on release.
- Can be incorporated into his mental attacks. 354 328
Spellcasting
Ovakain is a Level 19 Master Level spellcaster with formidable defensive and mobility magic.
- Mind Fusion Shield — absorbed Punk’s Master Level Mind Blade during their clash in Wayne’s Consciousness Space. 328
- Mind Roar — amplified by Dragon Might; destroyed Wayne’s Consciousness Space and overwhelmed Punk’s mental projection. 328
- Rapid Teleportation — a modified movement spell that allows sudden, supersonic bursts of speed. 355
- Spatial Anchor — prevents opponents from escaping through spatial movement such as Any Door. 355
- Blink — used as an emergency movement option during the Sleeping Dragon Volcano battle. 378
- Myriad Claws — a Master Level Enchantment spell used against Punk during their later confrontation. 453
Defensive Magic
Ovakain maintains extensive layered protective magic in addition to his natural scales.
- His defenses were strong enough that Punk considered direct spellcasting ineffective without first creating an opening. 357
- His protective layers and physical resilience allowed him to survive the eruption of the Sleeping Dragon Volcano, though he sustained catastrophic injuries. 381
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Legendary necklace — automatically protected Ovakain during the Sleeping Dragon Volcano eruption. 381
- Greater Polymorph enchantment — contained in the necklace; enables his human disguise and was originally intended to help him operate delicate alchemical instruments. 388
Relationships
- The old half-dragon Priest — Adoptive father, teacher, and moral guide. He rescued Ovakain’s egg, taught him magic, and entrusted him with the dream of freeing the half-dragon tribe from prejudice and isolation. 380
- Half-dragon tribe — Ovakain’s childhood home and family; their welfare became the foundation of his kingdom-building efforts. 380 401
- Punk Sai’an — Principal enemy and fellow spellcaster. Their conflict begins as a dragon-slaying mission and escalates into repeated battles, pursuit, and mutual attempts to trap one another. 303 328 354 390 438 453
- Joni-Zordas — Enemy who seeks revenge against Ovakain and joins Punk and Benraji in fighting him. 354 358
- Aisha — Desert caravan member who helps rescue Ovakain while he is injured. She becomes a confidante and urges him to act cautiously; public reports later announce her marriage to the new Master Level expert, Ovakain. 402 416 429 438
- Nightmare Cult — Enemy faction responsible for atrocities in Waibien; Ovakain resolves to pursue revenge against it. 438
Story Role / Major Arcs
Dragon Roar Kingdom Conflict
Ovakain is the target of Punk and Benraji’s Master Level dragon-slaying mission. He confronts Punk, Benraji, and Joni-Zordas as a Master Level Black Dragon nearing Legendary status, using overwhelming Dragon Might, layered defenses, corrosive breath, and spellcasting to resist them. 303 354 355
During the battle at Sleeping Dragon Volcano, Punk exploits Ovakain’s emergency movement options and triggers a catastrophic eruption. Ovakain survives through his Legendary necklace but is left with a critically unstable soul and discovers that the volcanic disaster has devastated both the Dragon Roar Kingdom and the Maple Leaf Kingdom. 378 381
Escape through the Raging Sands Desert
Unable to cast even simple spells due to soul damage, Ovakain assumes a human form and flees into the Raging Sands Desert while Punk pursues him through a Soul Mark. He collapses from dehydration before being rescued by a caravan. 388 390
He initially pretends to be a distressed noble, but Aisha recognizes his Master Level Soul Level. Ovakain remains with the caravan and reaches Rock Sand City, where he begins seeking assistance against Punk. 401 402 414
Waibien and the Nightmare Cult
Ovakain refuses Aisha’s request to remain in Waibien as its Protector expert because Punk is still hunting him, though he agrees to consult her great-grandfather and investigate the Nightmare Cult. 416
After witnessing the death of the young girl Yano at the hands of cult-controlled Ram-headed people, Ovakain abandons restraint. He resolves to turn the cult’s apparent trap against both the Nightmare Cult and Punk. 438
Failed Advancement
During the ensuing confrontation, Ovakain merges with a demonic minor lord’s projection and unveils his final measure: a deliberate attempt to advance to Legendary despite his damaged soul. The advancement is intended to fail. 462

“The flames of hatred have ignited my spine. From this moment on, my revenge needs no further waiting.” 438
