Background / History

Origin and concealment

Gu Chen was originally the Golden Dragon King. To avoid detection by the God Realm, he placed eighteen seals on his own power and became a six-year-old human. Gu Yuena likewise sealed her strength, and the two began living in human society together. 2

After sealing himself, Gu Chen converted his remaining divine power into Soul Power. His Golden Dragon King power became the Golden Dragon Martial Soul, while a golden spear formed from his body became the Golden Dragon Spear. 3

Nuoding Academy and Shrek Academy

At Nuoding Academy, Gu Chen defeated Xiao Wu through the suppression of his superior beast Martial Soul and became the work-study students’ boss. He chose to befriend Tang San rather than make an early enemy of him, sharing information about his Golden Dragon Martial Soul and acquiring the Mysterious Jade Hand through the System. 4

His strength and abrasive humor quickly became apparent. He publicly humiliated and defeated older students who insulted Gu Yuena, while his body was durable enough that a full-force staff strike would have shattered against him. 5

Gu Chen later entered Shrek Academy with Tang San and the others. When Tang Hao confronted Zhao Wuji, Gu Chen fought Tang Hao in a spar, forcing the Clear Sky Douluo back and using the Golden Dragon Spear to devour his Soul Power. Tang Hao subsequently entrusted Tang San’s future safety to him. 18

Rise within Spirit Hall

After breaking his fourth seal in the Star Dou Great Forest, Gu Chen gained a 90,000-year fourth soul ring and further purified his Golden Dragon King bloodline. Di Tian acknowledged him as master during this journey. 33

Gu Chen inherited Yuan Ge’s legacy, experiencing Yuan Ge’s life on another plane. The inheritance made him more calculating, ruthless, and willing to use deception and control to achieve his aims. 39

He became Spirit Hall’s Holy Son and was later appointed Hall Master of the Spirit City branch. While publicly accepting Qian Xunji’s arrangements, he concealed his plan to use Spirit Hall’s structure to secure a future for soul beasts. 96 142

When conflict with Qian Xunji became open, Gu Chen rejected titles offered by the Spirit Hall Emperor and demanded the position of Regent King. He killed the level 98 Super Douluo Miao Yuheng after Miao intervened to defend Qian Xunji. 265 266

Gu Chen later infiltrated the Sun Moon Empire under the identity of the immortal Mu En. By curing Xu Zheng’s ailments and raising him to Super Douluo with a Longevity Pill, he gained the title of Imperial Tutor and access to the imperial palace. 303

By the time of the Year Beast invasion, Gu Chen was the emperor of the Spirit Hall Empire and the common ruler of Douluo Continent’s soul beasts. Under his rule, humans and soul beasts lived together in divided urban districts rather than entering the expected war of extermination. 416
