Background / History

Cloud Retainer’s disciple

Cloud Retainer adopted Shenhe in childhood and raised her on Mt. Aocang. She was fitted with a red string by the Adepti to restrain the malevolent aura within her. 67 79

Cloud Retainer sent Shenhe down the mountain to experience the mortal world shortly before the Rite of Descension. Shenhe departed carrying her spear, marking her first independent journey beyond Mt. Aocang. 45

Nantianmen incident

Repeated attacks by Treasure Hoarders drove Shenhe into a prolonged series of fights near Nantianmen. She initially defended herself without killing anyone, sending attackers flying and having uninvolved Treasure Hoarders bind the injured criminals. 67

As further Treasure Hoarders and Fatui assaulted her, Shenhe’s restraint deteriorated. When Hammer Bro attempted to strike her from behind, the red string snapped and her malevolent aura erupted; she shattered his armor with a single punch and nearly killed him with a second. 68

Cloud Retainer and Bai Ye arrived in time to prevent fatalities. Under Cloud Retainer’s Adeptal Arts, Bai Ye absorbed Shenhe’s accumulated malevolent aura, leaving Shenhe conscious of what had occurred and deeply worried when he collapsed from exhaustion. 69

Life in Liyue Harbor

Following the incident, Shenhe became Bai Ye’s bodyguard under Cloud Retainer’s orders. She remained close to him during his meetings and travels, framing her duty as protection rather than paid employment. 78 79

She gradually adapted to life among mortals: Bai Ye taught her that meals eaten outside must be paid for, and her use of the family’s inherited curse technique led Chongyun to recognize her as his aunt. 72

Journeys and later battles

Shenhe joined Bai Ye’s journey to Inazuma after declaring that she would accompany him. She continued to seek his help in removing the malevolent aura from her body, though the amount she generated had become manageable for him. 143

During the battle against Apep, Shenhe was assigned to damage Apep’s body and prevent its energy from reaching Bai Ye. She repeatedly drove her Cryo-infused spear into the dragon’s flesh, then shielded Bai Ye and Lumine from Apep’s attempted self-destruction. 329 330

Personality

Shenhe is reserved, literal, and direct. Having spent much of her life in the mountains, she initially finds ordinary social customs unfamiliar, though she makes deliberate efforts to learn them—such as knocking before entering Bai Ye’s home rather than simply walking in. 72 143

Despite her overwhelming strength, Shenhe does not wish to kill. During the Nantianmen incident, she repeatedly restrained herself, fearing that fatal violence would let her malevolent aura consume her. 67

Her loyalty to Bai Ye is uncomplicated and intense. She treats protecting him as both her assigned duty and her personal priority, readily placing herself between him and danger. 71 78 330
