Background / History
Yiyuan Sect was an old orthodox sect based at Qingyun Flat, deep within Mount Hua. Despite its reputation and powerful Daoist magic, it historically remained tiny: even in its founding patriarch's era, it reportedly had no more than twenty-three members. Its disciples' preference for secluded cultivation and freedom left the sect severely understaffed rather than actively recruiting successors. 4 5
Before Li Feng's arrival, the sect had three generations and only sixteen members. Its five highest-ranking figures were the sect master and four fellow elders, while eleven second-generation disciples existed in total; most remained in seclusion, and two were traveling below the mountain. Li Feng became its sole fourth-generation disciple. 4
The sect's oldest known predecessors—Cang Yue, Tou Xing, and Pian Tian—had left for the Lesser Arctic Nether Sea to cultivate beneath its waters while approaching Void Transformation and their Heavenly Tribulations. Their absence contributed to later generations' lack of guidance and recruitment. 5
Xiao Longzi brought Li Feng to Qingyun Flat after recognizing his lack of attachments and cultivation potential. Li Feng was formally entered into the sect as Li Fengzi, nominally under Xiao Longzi and Chen Songzi's line, though the elders described him as a disciple of the entire sect. 4 5
Doctrine & Cultivation
Yiyuan Sect's central principle is “Model Nature.” Its members are expected to follow their hearts, remain free and unfettered, and preserve a natural, clear, tranquil state rather than submit to extensive rules and rituals. The sect forbids setting the mountain on fire and deeds that outrage Heaven and humanity, but otherwise gives disciples unusual freedom. 4 5
Its core Daoist method seeks communication and unity with Heaven and Earth. Practitioners gather pure primordial qi to remedy their own deficiencies, temper body and bones outwardly, nurture the Nascent Soul inwardly, and ultimately unite spirit and flesh to attain the Dao. 9 13
| Major Realm | Minor Realms | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation Establishment | Ordinary Qi Refining | The introductory stage focuses on tempering the body, training internal breath, and studying Daoist scriptures. 9 |
| Qi | Qi Induction; Qi Condensation; Qi Transformation | Practitioners draw spiritual energy into the Purple Mansion and cultivate Misty Violet Qi. 9 |
| Core | Core Brewing; Core Formation; Core Tempering | Completion of this path produces a life-bound Golden Core. 9 |
| Spirit | Spirit Breaking; Spirit Nurturing; Spirit Severing | The Golden Core develops into a Dao Embryo Nascent Soul, granting a Half-Immortal Body. 9 |
| Void | Void Glimpse; Void Penetration; Void Transformation | The highest documented realm; Void Transformation cultivators are rare and commonly remain hidden in remote regions. 9 |
The sect considers cultivation of the heart indispensable. Heavenly treasures and spirit pills can accelerate bodily cultivation, but without sufficient Dao attainment they produce an unstable foundation and endanger future progress. 7 13

Notable Disciples
- Xiao Longzi — Li Feng's nominal master; recruited him for the sect and later formed a Golden Core. 3 4 11
- Xie Yuezi — Xiao Longzi's senior brother; instructed Li Feng in the sect's Dao, elemental arts, and cultivation principles. 4 13 14
- Gu Lingzi — Elder disciple and alchemist; guarded rare herbs and taught Li Feng pill refinement. 6 15

- Ling Guangzi — A powerful but naïve disciple; fought alongside Liu Xingzi against the Right Saint and sacrificed himself in the defense of the sect. 20 28
- Zhao Yue'er — Qingbo and Lingwei's daughter; not formally entered in the sect rolls, but possessed great influence within it and took Li Feng as her disciple. 5 7
Qingyun Flat
Qingyun Flat was Yiyuan Sect's mountain seat, consisting of a central peak and five surrounding peaks. It contained simple bamboo huts and wooden houses for ordinary living, but its hidden facilities and formations could transform the site into an imposing immortal residence. 20 21
Facilities
- Shouyi Pavilion — Repository for Yiyuan Sect's Daoist books and introductory cultivation texts. 7
- Hun Yuan Yi Qi Cave — Seclusion site used by the Five Elders while refining the Chiyou Banner. 20
- Lesser Celestial Realm — Restricted scripture and cultivation realm containing the Purple Radiance Pavilion; it could not safely accommodate more than three people at once due to instability in its spiritual energy. 24
- Nine Yang Gathering Yuan Array — A formation of more than two hundred stone peaks raised by the elders to draw spiritual energy from within three hundred li and cultivate rare medicinal herbs. 6
- Pill-refining grounds — Protected by layered formations and inaccessible even to Little Cat, the mountain-guarding spiritual tiger. 5
Practices & Defenses
Elemental Arts
Yiyuan Sect teaches Wind, Lightning, Gold, Water, Earth, Wood, and Fire Control Arts to disciples who reach the later stage of Qi Induction. These arts are not solely combat techniques; they are also methods for communicating with Heaven and Earth and comprehending Heaven's intent. 14
- Wind Control Art — Directs the clear qi of Heaven and Earth; it may produce a gentle breeze or destructive winds comparable to superior sword light. 14
- Five Elements arts — Metal, wood, water, fire, and earth techniques used in combat, cultivation, and formation control. 14 20
- Palm Thunder and lightning arts — Used by Zhao Yue'er to discipline and pursue Li Feng during his training. 8
Great Five Elements Exterminating God Array
The sect's principal killing formation wielded the forces of the Five Elements. It could conceal Qingyun Flat, manifest devastating elemental attacks, and kill powerful intruders. 20 23 26
- The array annihilated seventeen Emei disciples during Old Daoist Wu Shen's assault. 23
- The Right Saint's forces mistook an incomplete formation for the sect's true defense and were drawn into a more dangerous, chaotic version of the array. 26 27
- Its elemental attacks did not follow the standard Five Elements cycle, combining opposing forces in ways that confused the invaders. 27
Concealment Techniques
- Ten Thousand Miles of Cloud and Smoke, Rivers and Mountains Painting — A sect treasure used by Zhao Yue'er to shroud Qingyun Flat in an illusion over an area of twenty miles and prevent intruders from locating its entrance. 25 26
- Peak-concealment formation — The disciples could raise and hide the central peak and five outer peaks, returning Qingyun Flat's sky and mountains to an ordinary appearance. 20
- Spirit-jade pavilion — By combining their arts, disciples could raise a grand three-story pavilion from the central pool, complete with bridges, rare materials, and more than a hundred seats for guests. 21
Alchemy & Spiritual Herbs
Yiyuan Sect maintained abundant spiritual herbs, pill furnaces, and medicinal treasures, largely because its sparse population left much of its mountain resources untouched. 5 6
- Candle Dragon Grass — A rare herb capable of assisting a Golden Core cultivator in forming a Dao Embryo Nascent Soul; Gu Lingzi guarded it. 6 7
- Vermilion Fruits — Spiritual fruits that greatly strengthened Little Cat's golden eye-light. 5
- Seven Treasures Rotation Pill — Restored Liu Xingzi's injuries and replenished his damaged Nascent Soul. 18
- Nine Revolutions Blazing Fire Pills — Refined by Qingbo. 5
- Fetus Gathering Pills — Refined by Chen Songzi. 3 5
Treasures
- One Yuan Pearl — A sect treasure capable of gathering Heaven and Earth spiritual energy; it could slowly restore the damaged Chiyou Banner. 20
- Chiyou Banner — A demonic divine artifact discovered during the Kongtong Mountain expedition. The Five Elders intended to refine away its baleful nature and turn it into a gate-guarding immortal treasure. 19 20
- Ten Thousand Miles of Cloud and Smoke, Rivers and Mountains Painting — Illusory defensive treasure used to conceal Qingyun Flat. 25 26
- Heavenly Mansion Daoist Scriptures — Ancient scriptures kept in the Lesser Celestial Realm. They contain powerful spell incantations, though many require Golden Core cultivation or greater and lack detailed Qi Refining methods. 24
Relationships
- Li Feng / Li Fengzi — Sole known fourth-generation disciple at the time of his admission; initially neglected by the elders but later trained and indulged by numerous senior disciples. 4 5 17
- Little Cat — Intelligent mountain-guarding spiritual tiger and the sect's only pet; accompanied Li Feng and benefited from the sect's spiritual herbs. 5 17
- Emei Sword Sect — Longstanding fellow righteous sect with historical ties to Yiyuan Sect, but conflict erupted after Ling Guangzi killed Emei disciple Qing He and Old Daoist Wu Shen attacked Qingyun Flat. 21 23
- Demonic cultivators led by the Right Saint — Invaded Qingyun Flat to seize the Chiyou Banner, ultimately destroying the sect. 26 28
- Mount Hua Sword Sect — A nearby sword sect repeatedly targeted by Li Feng and several Yiyuan disciples for theft, creating chaos and damaging Yiyuan Sect's reputation. 16 17
Story Role / Major Arcs
Li Feng's Admission
Xiao Longzi recruited Li Feng, and the Five Elders formally admitted him as Li Fengzi. The sect assigned him three years of Qi cultivation, firewood chopping, water carrying, and pill-furnace work, though its members largely left him unsupervised to pursue their own seclusion. 4 5
Training and Internal Disorder
Zhao Yue'er assumed responsibility for Li Feng's instruction, while Xie Yuezi, Gu Lingzi, Chen Songzi, and other disciples taught him cultivation, elemental arts, alchemy, and Daoist principles. Li Feng's influence also led several normally secluded disciples into stealing wine from Mount Hua Sword Sect, threatening the sect's orthodox reputation. 7 14 17 18
Demon Suppression and the Chiyou Banner
After demons injured Liu Xingzi, Yiyuan Sect mobilized to Kongtong Mountain. The Five Elders destroyed seven old demons and numerous lesser demons with only a fraction of their strength, while Li Feng discovered the Chiyou Banner in the demons' cave. 18 19
The Five Elders entered seclusion to refine the banner, leaving Liu Xingzi to oversee sect affairs. 20
Conflict with Emei
Old Daoist Wu Shen arrived with more than a hundred Emei disciples to demand justice for Qing He's death. Yiyuan Sect's disciples intimidated the visitors with their seniority, cultivation, formations, and the manifested pavilion of Qingyun Flat. 21
When Wu Shen's disciples' demonic practices were exposed, Wu Shen attacked Yiyuan Sect to silence them. The sect repelled him, but many members were injured in the conflict. 23
Destruction of the Sect
While the Five Elders remained occupied with the Chiyou Banner, the Right Saint and his followers infiltrated Qingyun Flat. Ling Guangzi and Liu Xingzi sacrificed themselves to wound the attacker, but the Right Saint destroyed the sect's cave dwelling and killed the Five Elders. 26 28
Li Feng returned to find the sect annihilated. Its Daoist scriptures, magical artifacts, and the One Yuan Pearl had been plundered, leaving him without the cultivation methods needed to continue beyond Qi Condensation. 29
