Background / History

Nuoding Academy

Yu Xiaogang first appears at Nuoding Academy, where he verifies Tang San and Gu Xuan's Spirit Hall certificates and admits them into the academy. Tang San immediately kowtows three times and asks to become his disciple; Yu Xiaogang accepts him. 5

He becomes intensely interested in Gu Xuan after seeing the Scythe of Shadows and measuring Gu Xuan's Level 10 Soul Power. Believing the martial soul to be a mutation that could validate his theories, he attempts to recruit Gu Xuan as a disciple, but Gu Xuan repeatedly refuses. 11 12

Yu Xiaogang puts Tang San through special training and provides pills that he claims have no side effects, allowing Tang San to reach Level 10. He then leads Tang San and Gu Xuan into the Soul Hunting Forest to obtain Tang San's first Spirit Ring. 12

During the expedition, Gu Xuan sacrifices Yu Xiaogang through his system, leaving him unconscious. Yu Xiaogang later suffers severe injuries in the forest, including the loss of a kidney, but remains focused on securing a ring for Tang San. He directs Tang San toward an approximately eighty-to-ninety-year Blood-Patterned Morning Glory, from which Tang San obtains his first Spirit Ring. 13 15 16

Shrek Academy

Six years later, Yu Xiaogang arrives at Shrek Academy after learning that Tang San failed its entrance examination. He is shocked by the academy's younger and stronger students—particularly Gu Xuan, now Level 38—and regrets failing to secure Gu Xuan as his disciple. 33 35

Flender permits Yu Xiaogang to remain at Shrek, but warns him not to reveal his martial soul or Soul Power to the students. Yu Xiaogang nevertheless introduces himself as Tang San's master and offers cultivation guidance, despite drawing little respect from Zhao Wuji, Li Yusong, and several students. 36 37 43

His relationship with Flender deteriorates as Yu Xiaogang repeatedly relies on their old friendship for assistance. Flender eventually declares that he will no longer help him after resolving Tang San's admission problem. 42

After Tang San is seriously injured, Yu Xiaogang promises to cover his disciple's treatment and surgery costs. He unsuccessfully attempts to turn Shrek's voluntary donation drive into a larger source of funds, and Flender assigns him to supervise toilet cleaning until the academy relocates. 105 108 110

He borrows 10,000 Gold Soul Coins from a Black Market lender, using compromising collateral. He later returns to Shrek in expensive clothes with a large amount of money described as having been stolen from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect. 118

Yu Xiaogang and Tang San arrive at Lan Ba Academy seeking work after being turned away from Heaven Dou Royal Academy. Yu Xiaogang fails the teaching assessment because he is only Level 29, below the Level 40 requirement, and accepts a cleaner position with Tang San. 161 165

When members of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect accuse him of stealing from the sect treasury, Yu Xiaogang insists that he only took 30,000 Gold Soul Coins. Liu Erlong intervenes and pays the 30,000 Gold Soul Coins, allowing him to remain at Lan Ba Academy. 173 174

His unpaid Black Market debt leads to his private photographs being distributed throughout Heaven Dou City. Liu Erlong purchases the photographs and resolves the immediate issue for him. 174

Yu Xiaogang continues investing Liu Erlong's resources in Tang San's cultivation. Tang San reaches Level 35 under his guidance, then temporarily reaches Level 38 after taking two more Spirit Medicines before a tournament match. 176 204
