Background / History

Laozi is the eldest of the Three Pure Ones, alongside Yuanshi and Tongtian. As a being formed from Pangu's Primordial Spirit, he is considered one of heaven and earth's favored great powers. He attended Dao Ancestor Hongjun's sermons at Purple Heaven Palace and secured one of the foremost seats with his two brothers 6 11.

During Hongjun's first sermon, Laozi was the first attendee to ask about the Dao, asking, “What is the Dao? Where is the Dao?” 11. At the second sermon, all three of his flowers bloomed at the ninth grade. He later used the White Jade Flat Crutch to sever an incarnation and advance to the peak of the early Quasi-Saint stage 15 16.

Hongjun subsequently granted Laozi the Taiji Diagram, one of the Three Treasures of Creation, in recognition of his status as Hongjun's eldest disciple 20.

Human Race and the Failed Human Religion

After observing Li Wu's Martial Dao and the Human Race's development, Laozi concluded that his path to sainthood lay in introducing Immortal Dao cultivation to humanity 35 36. He spent centuries devising the Golden Core Great Dao, a method suited to human cultivation, then publicly preached it among the Human Race 36.

Laozi attempted to establish the Human Religion with the Taiji Diagram as its treasure, intending to secure the Human Race's Destiny. The attempt failed because he lacked the approval of the Human Race, Li Peng, Nuwa, and Li Wu 36 37. Fuxi subsequently established the Human Religion with their collective authorization and ascended to sainthood, leaving Laozi bitter and resentful over the lost opportunity 37.

Li Peng intercepted Laozi after his failure, and the Three Pure Ones intervened to protect their eldest brother. Laozi was injured in the confrontation and ultimately surrendered the Earth-Leaving Flame Light Banner to Li Peng as compensation 37 38.

Establishment of Daoism

Laozi later attained sainthood by establishing Daoism rather than the Human Religion. He declared that Daoism would enlighten all beings in the Primordial Era and designated the Taiji Diagram as its destiny-guarding treasure 39.

Although Daoism later sought to spread among the Human Race, it competed for destiny with the Chan Sect, Jie Sect, Human Sect, Confucian Teachings, and other forces 81 82.

Investiture of the Gods

During the Investiture of the Gods tribulation, Laozi attempted to preserve Daoism's limited number of disciples. He sent his Good Corpse to take Xuan Du's place on the Investiture of the Gods list, leaving Daoism largely outside the main calamity 113.

He nevertheless allied with Yuanshi, Zhunti, and Jieyin against Tongtian and the Jie Sect, judging that the Chan Sect could not withstand the Jie Sect's vast number of disciples alone 114. During the tribulation, Laozi's Good Corpse was placed upon the Investiture of the Gods Scroll, while his Evil Corpse was destroyed while protecting Xuanjizi 124. This prevented him from using One Qi Transforms Three Pure Ones, which required both corpses to remain intact 124.

Daoism's Later Expansion

Following the tribulation, Laozi acted to weaken the rapidly expanding Western Teachings without openly confronting Jieyin and Zhunti. He took the reincarnated Daoist Duobao as a disciple and guided him through the human world as part of a broader plan against Western Buddhism 141.

Laozi later accepted Li Xuan—who became known as Iron Crutch Li—as a disciple, bestowed him three Spiritual Treasures, and elevated him directly to Grand Unity Golden Immortal. Together with seven other converts, Iron Crutch Li formed the Eight Immortals and spread Daoism among humanity 142.

He also accepted Kong Qiu as his most accomplished human-world disciple, entrusting him with the dissemination of Daoist teachings and passing the Classic of Virtue to him 143. Laozi eventually aided Duobao's reincarnation as Siddhartha Gautama and later bestowed Daoist and Buddhist doctrines upon him, enabling Duobao to establish Lesser Vehicle Buddhism 143 151.

Personality

Laozi is generally composed, deliberate, and difficult to provoke into open action. He values destiny and fortune as foundations of cultivation, rather than treating them as incidental luck 10.

He follows the Great Dao of non-action and often distances himself from minor disputes, though this detachment does not prevent him from acting decisively when Daoism's destiny or his disciples are threatened 109 141. He repeatedly attempts to mediate between Yuanshi and Tongtian, invoking their shared origin as the Three Pure Ones, but ultimately sides with Yuanshi when the Investiture of the Gods conflict escalates 73 112 114.

Laozi is also politically calculating. He sought the Human Race's Destiny through the Human Religion, attempted to use rogue cultivators to ease the Investiture's burden on the Three Sects, and later arranged Duobao's path to undermine the Western Teachings indirectly 36 112 141.
