Background

As a child, Itachi was polite, serious, and unusually approachable for an Uchiha. He met the Kurama heir following Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki’s funeral, beginning a friendship that developed through rivalry and frequent sparring 4 8. Ming Jing’s teasing brought out Itachi’s more childish and sarcastic side, while their contests pushed him to train harder 8 9.

Itachi and Ming Jing later promised to pursue world peace through their own methods. Itachi remained skeptical that politics could solve every problem, believing strength ultimately determined outcomes 144. His interest in genjutsu also deepened through Ming Jing’s theories, which he brought to Shisui for discussion 56.

As the Uchiha–Konoha conflict escalated, Itachi opposed the planned coup alongside Shisui. Shisui’s death and final entrustment profoundly affected him, leading to Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan awakening 308 317. He subsequently served as a Konoha spy within the Uchiha Clan while also operating in Anbu 680.

During the Uchiha massacre, Itachi killed clan members while a masked Mangekyō Sharingan user attacked elsewhere in the compound 378. He presented himself to Sasuke as a power-driven murderer, publicly became the sole culprit, and was classified as Konoha’s second S-Rank rogue ninja after Orochimaru 382 384. Obito later told Sasuke that Itachi had acted under a Konoha order to eliminate the coup threat 679.

Personality

Itachi is disciplined, observant, and difficult to unsettle in combat. He studies opponents before committing himself, analyzes techniques during battle, and adjusts his tactics without panic 344. Even as a child, he did not underestimate opponents merely because they appeared foolish or unprepared 8.

His outward detachment conceals intense loyalty to people he considers important. He helped Shisui seek a way to stop the coup, repeatedly protected Sasuke despite encouraging his hatred, and embedded safeguards against Obito within Sasuke’s eyes 308 524 677. His choices leave him burdened by regret, particularly over failing to trust Sasuke more directly 679.

Akatsuki Service

After joining Akatsuki, Itachi defeats Jūzō to establish their partnership and undertakes missions involving assassinations, Kirigakure infiltration, and Tailed Beast intelligence 391 402 403. He later returns to Konoha with Kisame under orders to capture Naruto, where he overwhelms Kakashi and Sasuke before escaping Jiraiya’s pursuit 520 524.

Battle with Sasuke

Itachi confronts Sasuke at the Uchiha compound, manipulates him with the history of the Mangekyō Sharingan, and stages himself as a brother seeking Sasuke’s eyes 671 673.
