After betraying the Galactic Republic during the Battle of Onderon, Pong Krell joined the Confederacy of Independent Systems and became Count Dooku's subordinate.
However, his circumstances were rather unusual. He had not abandoned the light side of the Force; he simply despised clones and hated the Galactic Republic's rotten politics, which was why he defected. In choosing to work with Dooku, he neither wanted to overthrow the old order nor establish an ideal new regime. He acted purely out of personal likes and dislikes.
For that very reason, Count Dooku did not trust him, and so he grew closer to Dawn Star Planet.
After the Confederacy of Independent Systems fell, Pong Krell joined the Twilight Covenant, yet he still refused to fight for the Kingdom of Dawn. He had always been searching for his own path—a path that belonged to him alone.
At the time, the Twilight Covenant was short on people, so having him serve as an instructor was not a bad idea. Given his considerable strength, Tang Xiao did not do anything to him. He taught Lightsaber techniques at the training camp. Tang Xiao knew that with someone like Pong Krell, it was enough as long as he did not cross the line.
Later, however, as the Kingdom of Dawn continued winning military victories, Pong Krell realized that it was time to choose a side. Otherwise, he would have no future in the Kingdom of Dawn.
That was why he began taking a more active role in the Kingdom of Dawn's affairs, participating in several operations against Dark Followers or Inquisitors who had infiltrated from the Galactic Empire.
