Background / History

Sasuke is the last survivor of the Uchiha Clan's annihilation. From the beginning, he dedicates himself to restoring his clan and killing his elder brother, Itachi, whom he believes solely responsible for the massacre 36 87.

During the Forest of Death, Orochimaru tests Sasuke and pushes him into awakening the Single-Tomoe Sharingan. Orochimaru then brands him with the Cursed Seal and promises that Sasuke will eventually seek him out for power 87.

After witnessing stronger shinobi during the Chunin Exams, Sasuke becomes dissatisfied with his rate of growth. He accesses the Uchiha Clan's restricted chamber, activates the first form of the Cursed Seal, and chooses to leave Konohagakure with the Sound Four to train under Orochimaru 159 160.

Orochimaru's training rapidly improves Sasuke's physical condition, chakra, Cursed Seal control, Fire and Lightning Release, and dōjutsu. He also comes to rely on Menma's advice, accepting criticism after Menma decisively defeats him in a sparring match 176 192 247.

Menma's revelations cause Sasuke to question the story surrounding the Uchiha massacre. He learns that Itachi acted alongside Konoha's forces and an unidentified Uchiha, and that the destruction was tied to the long-running conflict between the Uchiha Clan and Konohagakure 252 261 514.

Sasuke later defeats Orochimaru when Orochimaru attempts to take his body. He takes command of Orochimaru's remaining forces and sets out to confront Itachi for the truth rather than pursuing revenge blindly 477 479.

When the brothers finally meet, Sasuke fights Itachi with the Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo. Realizing that Itachi is deliberately accepting death and did love him in his own distorted way, Sasuke spares him, intending instead to take Itachi's eyes for the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 529 535 536. He eventually accepts the transplant after Menma emphasizes that strength is necessary for his future goals 540.

Following the conflict, Sasuke chooses the Village of Light as the base from which to rebuild the Uchiha Clan and restore its standing 585. He later joins Menma, Naruto, and Toneri in confronting Ōtsutsuki Isshiki 638.

Personality

Sasuke is intensely proud, cold, and impatient with weakness—especially his own. His desire to avenge the Uchiha Clan and surpass Itachi initially drives nearly every major decision he makes, including his defection to Orochimaru 36 159.

He seeks strength as quickly as possible and struggles to accept defeat, but he can acknowledge genuine shortcomings when offered a practical path to improvement. Menma's guidance gradually makes him more patient and objective, particularly regarding Itachi and the Uchiha massacre 192 479.

Though his feelings toward Itachi remain full of hatred, grief, and resentment, Sasuke ultimately refuses to let his brother escape accountability through death. He considers a lifetime of atonement more fitting than execution 536.
