|---|---|---|
| Level 6 Clay Golem | 7 | First summoned after Li Shaolin unlocks the skill at level 6. It is dwarf-sized, physically durable, and capable of regenerating damaged clay with surrounding earth. |
| First-Tier and Fourth-Tier Clay Golems | 20 | Li Shaolin's Book of the Dead records both a First-Tier and a Fourth-Tier Clay Golem; the precise cause of the fourth-tier advancement is not established. |
| Golden Golem, Level 17 | 23 24 | A lost Clay Golem mutates after absorbing the blood and souls left by the Fargodeep Mine massacre. It exceeds Li Shaolin's level, cannot be recalled into the Book of the Dead, and exists beyond the normal one-golem limit. |
| Stone-hardened body and enhanced Slow Aura | 66 | The standard Clay Golem grows larger, its muddy exterior hardens toward stone, and its slowing aura becomes markedly stronger against Old God tentacles. |
| Failed advancement attempt | 131 | Clay Golems enter an absorption state but cannot advance because the undead base lacks sufficient Death energy. |
Background / History
Li Shaolin first summons the Clay Golem while stranded in Fargodeep Mine. The roughly meter-tall construct immediately proves itself against Kobolds, crushing two with its fists while ignoring a mining pick embedded halfway into its body; the wound closes as earth flows back into place. 7
During the battle for the mine's side tunnels, the golem serves as Li Shaolin's main defensive summon. Its footsteps churn the ground into mud that slows enemies, allowing Skeleton Warriors and Bone Fangs to finish immobilized Kobolds. It withstands repeated wounds while fighting Goldtooth and regenerates even after being cut open by the Kobold's shortsword. 8
After the Fargodeep massacre, one lost Clay Golem returns transformed into a Level 17 Golden Golem. Li Shaolin concludes that it likely absorbed the blood essence of the countless Kobolds killed in the mine. Though it recognizes him as “Master,” it cannot be stored or fully directed through their mental link. 23 24
Li Shaolin assigns the Golden Golem to guard Fargodeep Mine. It can hide within the earth as flowing mud, understands simple spoken orders, and is introduced to Homor as an additional guardian. It later intervenes when a masked Defias child overwhelms Li Shaolin's Skeleton Generals, driving the intruder away. 24 29
The ordinary Clay Golem remains one of Li Shaolin's most reliable travelling summons. It protects him from Murlocs, Ghouls, undead, spiders, and other threats; clears difficult terrain; and continues to operate when Skeleton Warriors must rest in the Book of the Dead. 13 45 73 86
Moram destroys a long-serving Clay Golem with black energy from Archeus, reducing it to ordinary soil and causing Li Shaolin severe backlash. Li Shaolin later summons a new Clay Golem, confirming that the summon can be replaced after destruction. 96 112
Appearance
A standard Clay Golem is a compact humanoid formed from earth and mud. Its body can shift between dense clay, soft mud, and increasingly stone-like material as it develops.
- Initially about one meter tall, roughly the size of a Dwarf. 7
- Possesses thick arms and a broad, sturdy chest. 7
- Can appear brown or mud-covered; absorbed blood may leave green liquid flowing through its damaged body. 10 39
- Later develops a larger frame and a rocky outer surface. 66 83
- The Golden Golem is nearly three meters tall, green-skinned, and identified by a golden name designation. 23
Abilities & Skills
Earth Body
The Clay Golem's earthen composition gives it exceptional endurance and allows it to repair itself using nearby soil.
- Regenerates wounds as earth flows back into damaged areas. 7 8
- Can reform after being cut apart, provided sufficient earth and Death power are available. 89
- Absorbs toxins without apparent harm. 89
- Can be destroyed by sufficiently powerful attacks, such as Moram's black energy. 96
Hard Mud and Soft Mud Forms
The golem can alter its physical state according to Li Shaolin's needs.
- Hard mud form — delivers heavy punches capable of crushing flesh, bone, and armored targets. 7 31
- Soft mud form — moves silently, bears weight, and can spread across the ground. 13 31
- Cushioned Li Shaolin's jump from a haunted house by flattening into a soft mud landing area. 13
- Can merge into earth and re-emerge, making it useful for ambushes and mine defense. 24
Slow Aura and Terrain Control
The Clay Golem manipulates nearby ground into adhesive mud that restricts enemy movement.
- Turns the ground around itself into mud or swamp-like terrain. 8 21
- Slows Kobolds, Murlocs, Gnolls, and undead opponents. 8 21 37 89
- Its improved Slow Aura substantially hinders Old God tentacles when combined with frost magic. 66
- High-level opponents may resist or greatly reduce the slowing effect. 31
Corpse Absorption and Looting
The golem can dissolve corpses into softened earth, leaving carried valuables behind.
- Absorbs bodies within roughly five yards while moving through softened ground. 8
- Cleans battlefields and leaves behind coins, gold sand, ore, weapons, and other loot. 8 33 35
- Can erase spiritual imprints on certain spatial items through absorption. 35
- Cannot absorb every corpse; Mobent's body remains unaffected. 112
Guardian Functions
The Clay Golem routinely acts as Li Shaolin's shield and forward defender.
- Blocks thrown spears with its yielding body. 13
- Holds enemies in place for Skeleton Warriors and Li Shaolin's spells. 17 32 89
- Clears weeds, roots, and narrow passages during travel and exploration. 37 93
- The Golden Golem guards Fargodeep Mine while concealed beneath its floors. 24
Limitations
- Avoids entering water and will retreat from damp mine entrances. 13 29
- Refuses to approach strong Holy Light after becoming saturated with Death energy through corpse absorption. 64
- Standard Clay Golems require sufficient Death energy to advance. 131
- The Golden Golem can only understand simple commands, cannot speak, and has intelligence comparable to a young child. 24
Relationships
- Li Shaolin — Summoner and master. The standard Clay Golem follows his commands through a mental link and functions as his most consistent defensive summon. 7 73
- Golden Golem — A mutated Clay Golem that recognizes Li Shaolin as “Master” but cannot be fully controlled or recalled. 23 24
- Homor — Entrusted with the Golden Golem's mine-guarding role; the Golden Golem is instructed to obey him within Fargodeep Mine. 24
- Skeleton Warriors — Frequent battlefield partners; the golem slows and restrains enemies while Skeleton Warriors deliver finishing attacks. 8 21 32
Story Role / Major Arcs
Fargodeep Mine
The Clay Golem gives Li Shaolin the durability and crowd control needed to survive the Kobold tunnels. It fights Goldtooth, clears corpses, and helps Li Shaolin escape after the mine is overrun. 7 8 10
Early Travels
Li Shaolin relies on the golem as a guard while fleeing haunted locations, fighting Murlocs, confronting bandits, and travelling through dangerous wilderness. Its soft-mud form also saves him from a high fall. 13 17 31
Guardian of Fargodeep Mine
The Golden Golem becomes Fargodeep Mine's hidden protector. Its ability to merge with the ground makes it an effective deterrent and allows it to repel dangerous intruders without exposing itself to workers or visitors. 24 29
Later Undead Campaigns
As Li Shaolin's undead forces expand, the Clay Golem remains a valuable independent summon because it can replenish itself from earth rather than relying entirely on the Book of the Dead's Death energy. It participates in battles against Ghouls, Old God tentacles, Worgen, undead elites, and Duskwood monsters. 45 66 83 89
