History
Li Shaolin awakens naked in Mirror Lake Orchard after playing World of Warcraft while leaving Diablo II open. He realizes he has transmigrated into Azeroth with a level-one Necromancer character, fashions a grass skirt from tea branches, and begins searching for food and shelter. 1
His class activates after he encounters a Forest Wolf. The Book of the Dead manifests as his class item, allowing him to raise Skeleton Warriors from corpses. Although his first summon is destroyed, Li survives through improvisation, kills the wolf, and reaches level 3. 2
After reaching Goldshire, Li joins Jack, Mogaban, and Moni on a kobold expedition into Fargodeep Mine. There he develops his summoning tactics, gains Clay Golem, defeats Goldtooth, and eventually becomes the mine’s owner through an agreement with the Stonefield side. 7 8 11 23
He later navigates the feud between the Stonefield and Makrolen families, helping negotiate an arrangement over Fargodeep Mine and agreeing to assist in reclaiming Jerod’s Dock from the Defias Brotherhood. 25 26
His travels bring him into contact with Archmage Seokreitus, who recruits him to infiltrate Ilgarra Tower and recover Ul’s Shadow Magic Research Papers and a Shadow Pendant from Morgans. Seokreitus equips him with an eight-slot Space Belt and potions for the task. 14 15
As Li’s undead forces evolve, he travels through Westfall, Duskwood, Shadowfang Keep, and Stormwind. He survives Onyxia’s Dragon Breath when the Book of the Dead automatically transforms him into a colossal black-armored figure wielding a curved greatsword. 33 73 108
After defeating Mobent, Li creates a sentient Death Knight/Lich from his corpse. Upon reaching level 20, he gains command over an expanding undead force; by the Ogre Mountain campaign, his army includes thousands of Abominations, Skeletons, and Golems. 112 117 128 130
Appearance
Li Shaolin usually presents himself as a lightly equipped human mage, often wearing a plain mage robe despite possessing physical strength comparable to a trained warrior. His appearance can change drastically when he assumes his Half-Undead form. 101 132
- Human form — retains a heartbeat and normal appearance after reverting from undeath. 58
- Undead form — muscles sink inward, his heart stops, and he gains enhanced vision in death mist. 132
- Emergency black-armored form — the Book of the Dead can manifest him as a colossal armored figure carrying a massive curved greatsword when he is near death. 108
Personality
Li Shaolin is highly adaptive under pressure. He repeatedly compensates for incomplete magical knowledge with improvisation, using terrain, summons, equipment, and enemy weaknesses rather than relying on direct confrontation. 19 112 126
Despite his necromancy and growing ruthlessness toward hostile forces, he shows compassion toward civilians and companions. He helps Tommy after a gnoll attack, protects a farmer’s grandson from a Ghost, and repeatedly risks himself to save Phili. 28 73 83
He is cautious about exposing his necromancy, often dismissing summons or disguising his abilities around strangers. This secrecy becomes increasingly difficult as his undead army and unusual powers grow. 2 33 143
Abilities & Skills
Necromancy and the Book of the Dead
The Book of the Dead is Li Shaolin’s class item and the core of his power. It records his skills, stores and manifests summons, maintains mental links with undead servants, and can react autonomously when his life is threatened. 2 108
- Raises Skeleton Warriors from monster corpses; the initial mana cost is 10. 1 2
- Can withdraw summons into the Book and redeploy them when needed. 32
- Its evolved form allows Li to transform into an Undead without physically holding the book. 132
- Its automatic defense recalled his summons and transformed him during Onyxia’s attack. 108
- At level 40, it unlocks identity pages capable of bestowing Diablo-based professions on inheritors. 125
Undead Summoning
Li commands a varied force of undead and constructed servants that become stronger through combat, corpse absorption, death energy, and Book of the Dead advancements.
- Skeleton Warriors and Generals — melee servants that can wield Bone Blades and Bone Shields; upgraded Skeleton Generals can receive White Bone Armor. 26 29
- Skeleton Assassin / Shadow Skeleton — a mutated stealth unit with twin blades, capable of disappearing into shadows for reconnaissance and assassination. 34 133
- Skeleton Mages — elemental undead created from suitable corpses, including an Electric Mage Skeleton. 41
- Clay, Golden, Steel, and Blood Golems — durable constructed servants used for frontline defense, corpse handling, and absorbing attacks. 7 23 83 91
- Abominations — later fielded in the thousands as Li’s main undead army. 117 130
- Death Knight/Lich — created from Mobent’s corpse; inherits Mobent’s memories and alchemical knowledge. 112
Bone Magic
Li’s bone-based spells provide his most reliable offensive and defensive tools.
- Bone Fang — rapid, low-cost projectiles that can lock onto targets. 5 73
- Bone Spear — his strongest single-target physical-damage spell; he defeats Mobent through consecutive instant casts. 112 135
- Bone Spirit — a tracking soul-targeting spell that damages and devours vengeful spirits. 133 135
- Bone Shield — a rotating defensive barrier; multiple shields can be summoned for stronger protection. 19 64
- Bone Armor Conversion — temporarily equips Skeleton Warriors with bone armor using bone material and 50 mana. 26 29
- Corpse Explosion — detonates corpses for area damage but rapidly drains mana. 91
Curses and Debilitation
Li uses curses to weaken enemies who outmatch his undead in speed, defense, or resistance.
- Lesser Blindness — impairs a target’s vision; particularly useful against agile opponents. 34 39
- Aging Curse — reduces targets’ defense and attributes by 20% within a four-yard area for four seconds. 126
- Lower Resistance — learned alongside Aging Curse to counter resistant enemies. 126
- Venomous Dagger — applies poison to a weapon or Skeleton General’s attacks. 26 32
Half-Undead Physiology
The Death Potion partially transforms Li into an undead being. He can switch between human and undead states, eventually doing so by thought alone. 54 58 132
- His Undead form resists mental domination; Will of the Undead lets him break free from Aras’s control. 66
- He can see clearly through his own death mist while in Undead form. 132
- He remains unaffected by the Succubus’s enchantment while his companions are incapacitated. 141
- The transformation initially causes stiffness, an absent heartbeat, and uncertainty over how far his body is changing. 54 66
Warrior and Paladin Techniques
Although a Necromancer, Li possesses exceptional physical strength and can fight with swords. He later demonstrates warrior transformations and Paladin-style techniques. 101 134
- Punches apart a Fireball with his bare hand and counterattacks its caster. 101
- Uses a greatsword and Paladin skills including Cleanse and Hand of Freedom while fighting a Tauren Shaman. 122
- Transforms into a warrior-like combatant and employs orthodox Paladin techniques against a Death Knight. 134
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Book of the Dead — blood-red/black necromantic class item bearing a skull motif; stores his skills and summons. 2 108
- Eight-Slot Space Belt — storage equipment granted by Archmage Seokreitus. 15
- Undead Amulet — increases necromancy strength, grants immunity to low-level physical attacks, and adds four Skeleton Warrior and four Skeleton Mage summon slots after level 20. 117
- Moonfang Scythe — powerful Night Elf artifact recovered from the ancient well with the Book of Ul. 120 123
- Book of Ul — shadow-magic research artifact whose interaction with the Moonfang Scythe alters Li’s spiritual sea and Book of the Dead. 120 123
- Archeus — pitch-black greatsword that occasionally flickers with starlight. 142
Relationships
- Archmage Seokreitus — powerful mage who monitors Li’s activity, initially suspects him of raising an Army of the Dead, then hires him for the Ilgarra Tower mission. 14 15

- Aili — Warlock companion who travels with Li and helps him fight Defias bandits. 16 18
- Sulonna — traveling companion and Defias-associated Warlock; the two cooperate during several dangerous journeys. 39 41
- Greyson — former ghost whom Li grants a physical Abomination body; Greyson becomes fiercely loyal and kills Bloodsail Pirates to rescue him. 46 49
- Phili — companion Li repeatedly tries to protect; he later grants her the Druid identity through the Book of the Dead. 83 125
- Altaia — Paladin ally who fights alongside Li against Duskwood’s undead and helps identify enemy abilities and equipment. 91 94
- The Lich / Death Knight — sentient servant created from Mobent’s corpse; inherits memories and alchemy knowledge, advises Li, and commands undead forces under him. 112 117 130
- Onyxia / Countess Katrana — black dragon antagonist who recognizes Li’s death energy, manipulates him through threats and deals, and nearly kills him with Dragon Breath. 101 103 108
