With the combined efforts of several low-ranking members of the Gale Mercenary Group, everyone retreated back within the range of the cargo trucks. The trucks provided cover, successfully limiting the Wind Wolves' wind blade attacks.
The Wind Wolves roaming the perimeter, seeing they couldn't reach the humans with their wind blades, lifted their heads and howled at the sky.
Instantly, all the wild wolves, as if receiving an order, charged forward fearlessly. Even when pierced by spears, they bit down on the spear shafts, refusing to let go.
"Damn it, do these things not feel pain?"
Baki cursed as he looked at the ever-growing pile of wolf corpses. With the wolves' suicidal attacks, everyone was forced to retreat step by step.
At the front of the encampment, over two hundred wolves had gathered. Under the relentless assault of wild wolves and Wind Wolves, the cargo trucks at the forefront had been reduced to piles of broken wood, and many mercenaries were already severely wounded.
"Wells, this isn't working. We'll be wiped out before dawn," the leader of the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group shouted while swinging his greatsword.
Wells surveyed the state of the camp. The entire area looked like it had been blood-soaked. The pack of wolves seemed to have lost all sense of pain; even when cut in half, their upper bodies still moved to bite.
"Ada! Batila! We need to break out. We have to kill or drive off Death's Howl. Otherwise, with it buffing the wolves, we'll be dragged to death."
He watched the giant white wolf, which was continuously howling at the wolf pack not far away. He then raised his shield to block a lunging wild wolf. The other two mercenary group leaders, also fighting on the front lines, understood Wells's point.
"You're right, Wells, but there are too many wolves now. We can't break through!"
Wells looked at his side, which had already lost thirty men. He gritted his teeth and said to a subordinate beside him, "Go tell Mr. Dida to pull out some carriages. We'll use the carriages to charge through."
Upon receiving his leader's orders, the subordinate quickly left the battlefield and returned to the center of the camp to find the caravan supervisor. Before long, the portly Dida arrived at the front lines, protected by two guards.
"Leader Wells, your subordinate said you needed carriages. What are you planning?"
Seeing Dida approach, Wells raised an eyebrow and beckoned to a reserve mercenary to take his place.
"No, you've misunderstood, Mr. Dida. It's like this: the current situation is too passive for us. Do you see that giant white wolf? That's a mid-tier magical beast. With it here, our plan to wear them down and retreat is unlikely to succeed."
Dida glanced at the giant white wolf in the distance, then at the bloody remains on the defensive line. The pungent smell of blood made him feel a bit nauseous. His face pale, he continued, "I understand, Leader Wells. Death's Howl, a mid-tier wolf-type magical beast with extremely powerful attack capabilities. But, but, my shipment is worth three thousand gold coins. I can't afford to lose it. I can't compensate for that."
Wells was momentarily stunned, not quite understanding what the caravan supervisor meant. After a few seconds, he seemed to realize something.
"Mr. Dida, we won't abandon the caravan to break through. We plan for the three of us leaders to take about ten men and launch an assault on Death's Howl. Only by killing or driving off that mid-tier magical beast can we ensure our safety. Otherwise, if we continue to stall like this, even if we're not completely wiped out, our casualties will be heavy."
Seeing Dida still hesitating, the leader of the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group, who was blocking attacks nearby, suddenly became enraged. He unleashed several sword energies towards the wolf pack, then turned and walked towards the two of them.
Aka, covered in blood, wielding his greatsword like a warrior from hell, grabbed Dida by the collar and lifted him up.
"Prepare the carriages and do as we say. Damn it, if we wanted to run, we would have run already. If you keep whining, I'll kill you."
Wells quickly stepped forward to separate them, forcefully pushing Aka aside. Whether he was stunned or something else, the caravan supervisor's legs went weak, and he sat down on the ground.
"Mr. Dida, please excuse him. Commander Aka didn't mean anything by it."
As mercenary groups who had cooperated several times, Wells didn't want any rift to form between the caravan and the mercenaries in this situation.
Dida, who had been sitting on the ground for a while to recover, stood up with the help of his guards. He gave a deep look at the Blood Wolf leader, who had returned to the front lines to block attacks, then turned and took Wells's hand, saying meekly, "I understand, Leader Wells. It's just that this shipment is too important. My entire fortune is in it. I'll prepare the carriages for you right away. Please be careful."
After speaking, he left the front lines under the protection of his guards. Wells stood there, watching the caravan supervisor's retreating back, and sighed helplessly. He turned back to the defensive line to find the other two leaders and begin discussing the surprise attack.
On the other side
As everyone retreated behind the defensive wall formed by the cargo trucks, the defensive pressure on the Gale Mercenary Group significantly decreased. Havent, able to catch his breath, turned to look for Paimon. He saw Paimon standing there blankly, as if he had lost his soul.
He glanced at the defensive line, which seemed stable enough. He quickly walked up to Paimon and patted the young man's cheek.
"Hey! Paimon, what's wrong? We're in a fight! Don't space out."
Paimon slowly raised his head upon hearing the voice. His eyes were bloodshot and red, filled with complex emotions: a mix of dread, fear, and anger. His voice tinged with a sob, he said to Havent, "Will, Will, Adai is dead. Adai is dead. He was saying he wanted to buy a gift for Lily in the Imperial Capital..."
Havent patted Paimon's shoulder in comfort, feeling helpless as he watched the incoherent young man. Just as Havent was about to say something more, he heard a scream from behind him.
Havent quickly turned around. Three Wind Wolves had leaped onto the top of a cargo truck and were attacking the defending mercenaries.
"Damn it!"
Forgetting about comforting Paimon, Havent grabbed the longsword stuck in the ground and charged forward.
After spitting three wind blades at the defending crowd, the three Wind Wolves leaped down and began attacking wantonly within the throng. Baki, who was at the forefront, quickly turned to engage the Wind Wolves.
"Okro, hold them! I'll take care of these three beasts quickly."
With that, he swung his great axe in a charge and cleave towards the hindquarters of a Wind Wolf. The Wind Wolf, which was tearing at a mercenary, seemed to sense danger and quickly let go, dodging to the side.
Baki's powerful strike only managed to cut a long gash on the Wind Wolf's flank. The Wind Wolf yelped in pain and turned to face its attacker.
Baki swallowed hard as he looked at the Wind Wolf baring its teeth at him. He then remembered the tall man's instructions, gritted his teeth, let out a loud roar, and raised his great axe to strike the Wind Wolf again.
