History
Konoha is home to major shinobi clans, including the Uchiha, Hyuga, Nara, Yamanaka, Akimichi, Aburame, Sarutobi, and Shimura. Its Uchiha members operate the Konoha Military Police Force, while the village maintains an Anbu force and a protective barrier at its entrance. Departing shinobi register before passing through the barrier. 1 61 74
During the Third Shinobi World War, Konoha fought on western, northern, and eastern fronts. The western force initially numbered roughly 8,000 shinobi at Mount Kikyo against nearly 30,000 allied Iwagakure and Sunagakure troops. 228 Following Sunagakure's withdrawal, Konoha pushed Iwagakure out of the Land of Rain, though Iwagakure later retook Mount Kikyo in a surprise attack via Kannabi Bridge. 264
The war ended in stages: Sunagakure withdrew after severe losses, Iwagakure signed a peace treaty with Konoha, and Kumogakure withdrew to its own border after its northern-front defeat. Konoha and Kirigakure remained opposed across the former Land of Whirlpools and the Land of Waves. 259 308
Third Shinobi World War
| Event | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Western Front deployment at Mount Kikyo | Konoha positioned its western forces around Mount Kikyo, using the Land of Rain’s bottleneck terrain to limit the larger allied army of Iwagakure and Sunagakure. 228 |
| Opening battle in the Land of Rain | Konoha countered Sunagakure’s Wind Style attacks with Water Style and coordinated the Yamanaka, Nara, and Akimichi clans through Shikaku Nara’s command structure. 230 |
| Defeat of Sunagakure’s leadership | Uchiha Tunan routed the allied forces and killed the Third Kazekage; Sunagakure later withdrew from the war and sent envoys for peace negotiations. 233 234 259 |
| Battle of Mount Kikyo | Iwagakure used Kannabi Bridge to launch a rear assault, capturing Mount Kikyo, killing many Konoha personnel, and releasing its prisoners. Namikaze Minato led the counterattack. 262 264 |
| Northern Front | Kumogakure’s forces, including the Third Raikage and Killer B, pressured Konoha until Uchiha Tunan joined the front. Kumogakure later retreated from the Land of Soup. 255 257 259 |
| Postwar peace arrangements | Iwagakure formally made peace with Konoha; western-front personnel were reassigned to the northern and eastern fronts. 308 |
Governance and Administration
| Office or institution | Documented role |
|---|---|
| Hokage | Hiruzen Sarutobi served as Third Hokage through the war, then resigned amid criticism of wartime losses. Namikaze Minato succeeded him as Fourth Hokage. 316 317 318 |
| Hokage Advisor | Uchiha Tunan became Konoha’s sole Hokage Advisor after the dismissal of Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura. 318 |
| Anbu | The Anbu was placed under Uchiha Tunan’s control and later consolidated with major administrative departments. 316 318 323 |
| Root | Danzo Shimura’s clandestine organization competed with the Hokage’s administration for influence. Following a failed mission, Hiruzen ordered reductions to Root’s funding and personnel. 65 66 |
| Konoha Military Police Force | A village security force associated with the Uchiha Clan. Uchiha Genbo and Uchiha Nanako served in it. 1 |
| Four major departments | The Logistics, Medical, Interrogation, and Intelligence Departments were merged with the Anbu facilities under Uchiha Tunan’s administration. 323 |
After Minato and Kushina’s deaths during the Nine-Tails crisis, Hiruzen was temporarily reinstated as Hokage while the leadership searched for a successor. 346 347
Security
- Konoha Barrier — A village-wide barrier regulates entrance and departure; shinobi register at the gate before leaving. It is sufficiently formidable that Zetsu considers infiltrating Konoha through it likely to result in detection. 61 74 323
- Anbu surveillance — Anbu personnel conduct intelligence work, investigations, counterespionage, escort operations, and emergency deployment. 6 148 323
- Underground departmental complex — The consolidated Anbu and departmental facilities include secret passages between the Logistics, Medical, Interrogation, and Intelligence Departments. 323
- Uchiha Security Force — Uchiha guards protect the clan compound and enforce its internal security. 351
Uchiha Clan Relocation
Following the Nine-Tails attack, the masked assailant’s Mangekyo Sharingan created widespread suspicion toward the Uchiha Clan. Konoha’s leadership concluded that the clan should be moved to the village outskirts for monitoring. 346 347
Uchiha Tunan reframed the relocation as an expansion: the new territory would encompass Naka Shrine, provide substantially more land, and include Konoha-funded child-rearing and educational subsidies. Fugaku Uchiha accepted the arrangement, and the Uchiha’s former territory was slated for incorporation into Konoha. 349 351
Civil Institutions
- Welfare Institute — Uchiha Tunan’s welfare institution became the successor to the disbanded Konoha Orphanage, with Konoha providing funding for its operation. 162
- Memorial and compensation policy — When Uchiha Tunan returned from the war, he publicly requested that compensation for fallen Konoha shinobi be doubled; Hiruzen approved the request. 289
- Ninja Academy — Konoha trains children as shinobi, though clan children are often instructed privately within their own families before or alongside academy education. 185
- Wartime medical and logistics network — Mount Kikyo served as a transit point for supplies, wounded shinobi, medical staff, and prisoners after Konoha’s western advance. 264
Relations with the Land of Fire
Konoha operates within the Land of Fire’s one-country, one-village system. The village depends on the country for funding and missions, while the country relies on Konoha for military protection. 74 77
This relationship is politically significant: the Daimyo’s authority is treated with exceptional deference by Konoha’s leadership, and the Daimyo Naraku directly intervened in Konoha’s postwar leadership dispute. 315 316
Major Crises
Nine-Tails Rampage
The Nine-Tails was released into Konoha shortly after Naruto Uzumaki’s birth, causing civilians to flee and forcing the village’s shinobi and Anbu into an emergency defense. 328 329
During the attack, Hiruzen organized Konoha’s forces against the beast while the masked assailant used space-time techniques to negate their attacks. Uchiha Tunan later appeared publicly as Konoha’s apparent savior and took part in sealing the Nine-Tails. 342 343
Political Succession Crisis
Heavy wartime casualties and public dissatisfaction weakened Hiruzen Sarutobi’s position. Danzo promoted himself as a successor, Fugaku Uchiha was supported by Uchiha interests, and Hiruzen favored Namikaze Minato. 314 317
Uchiha Tunan’s support was decisive in Hiruzen’s impeachment vote and Minato’s unanimous confirmation as Fourth Hokage. 317
