Background / History

Kakashi first appears as a gifted but dismissive Academy student who bullies Uchiha Tunan over Tunan’s parents remaining in the village rather than going to the battlefield 1. He initially considers Tunan, even after the latter awakens the Sharingan, to be far beneath him in practical combat. Tunan’s unexpectedly advanced Clone, Substitution, Transformation, and Fire Style techniques force Kakashi to recognize his potential during their sparring match 6.

Tunan begins visiting the Hatake residence to train with Kakashi. Although Kakashi maintains a lazy, indifferent front, he accepts the arrangement, and the two spar daily in the Hatake family’s training yard. At this stage, Kakashi already knows several ninjutsu and possesses greater stamina than Tunan 8. The partnership continues through their early graduation and assignment to Team Nine under Namikaze Minato 32 39.

Hatake Sakumo’s death destabilizes Kakashi. He initially directs his grief toward Tunan, who killed Sakumo in a duel, but Sakumo’s will identifies Tunan as the man who helped him die honorably and asks Kakashi to regard him as a lifelong companion 71. Kakashi later confronts Tunan again over the duel, only for Tunan to trap him in repeated genjutsu battles designed to expose flaws in Kakashi’s swordsmanship and training approach 109 110.

During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi develops rapidly. He receives a Seed of the Way Curse Mark from Tunan to unlock his potential, later awakening a Sharingan and then a Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Its dynamic vision allows him to properly wield Lightning Spirit Wind Flash and slaughter a force of Iwagakure Jonin during the Kannabi Bridge operation 201 259 265.

Kakashi’s attempt to rescue Rin ends in tragedy when he kills her with Raikiri to stop the Three-Tails sealed within her from devastating Konoha. The trauma awakens his Mangekyo Sharingan, including the lightning-based Kenjutsu and Tsukuyomi 284 285. He conceals Obito’s survival and role in later events, a decision that becomes a lasting source of guilt and eventually brings Tunan’s trust in him into question 356 392.

After the war, Kakashi takes Hatake Yanbu and Hatake Yi into the Hatake family, acting as their guardian and clan head 312 364. He serves as an Anbu Captain and remains one of Tunan’s principal subordinates, though Tunan privately decides to keep him alive as a useful instrument after learning that Kakashi concealed Obito’s identity 392 393.

Appearance

Kakashi is recognizable by his white hair and the face mask he habitually wears 33 356.

  • Carries the White Fang sword inherited from Hatake Sakumo 109 265.
  • Possesses crimson Sharingan eyes, later evolving them into Mangekyo Sharingan 265 284.
  • Wears an Anbu mask while operating in Anbu service 356.

Personality

Kakashi often presents himself as lazy, nonchalant, and emotionally reserved. As a child, he does not readily show praise or concern, though his willingness to train daily with Tunan reveals that he values a capable companion 8 14 16.

He is intensely driven to surpass his father and become a powerful ninja. This determination leads him to create Raikiri and repeatedly push his body beyond its limits, even when the technique is incomplete and harmful to use 39 61.

Kakashi is deeply protective of comrades. He rescues Obito during the Mount Kikyo battle, refuses to abandon Rin after learning she has become the Three-Tails’ jinchuriki, and ultimately bears the burden of killing her to protect Konoha 264 282 284. The losses of Sakumo, Rin, and Obito leave him guilt-ridden, but he resolves to continue protecting the village and those under his care 312 356.

His sternness is particularly visible as Hatake clan head. Yanbu and Yi fear his authority, yet he ensures their education and safety and leaves for duty only after ordering them to remain home 364.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan

Kakashi awakens a Sharingan after Tunan’s potential-unlocking procedure and later manifests three tomoe during the Kannabi Bridge mission 259 265.

  • The Three-Tomoe Sharingan grants the dynamic vision required to use the high-speed Lightning Spirit Wind Flash effectively 265.
  • Its genjutsu capability allows Kakashi to attempt mental attacks against powerful opponents, though Tunan reflects one such genjutsu with Mirror Heaven and Earth Turning 266.
  • His Mangekyo Sharingan awakens after Rin’s death 284.
  • Kakashi can use Tsukuyomi, trapping a target in an illusionary space where time moves seventy-two times faster than reality 285.
  • He is also stated to possess Kamui, using it to send Obito into Tsukuyomi Space 285.
  • His Mangekyo abilities are highly dependent on ocular power; Madara’s Instantaneous Clone overwhelms Kakashi inside Tsukuyomi through superior ocular power 407 408.

Raikiri

Kakashi’s signature Lightning Style technique concentrates lightning chakra into his hand for piercing attacks.

  • His early Raikiri is a hand-signless technique with immense potential, but it damages his body and is not yet supported by sufficient speed 61.
  • He later uses Raikiri: Double Lightning Shock, splitting the technique between both hands while charging at high speed 266.
  • He uses Raikiri to save Obito and pierce enemy Jonin during the war 264 279.
  • The technique becomes the weapon with which he kills Rin when she forces herself into its path 284.

Kenjutsu / Raijin Kenjutsu

Kakashi’s lightning-based Mangekyo ocular technique manifests as autonomous lightning hounds.

  • Kenjutsu releases living lightning hounds that track and strike targets even when they attempt to evade 284.
  • He later refines the technique into Raijin Kenjutsu, reducing chakra consumption while increasing its power severalfold 404.
  • The technique is powerful enough that its sustained use terrifies Hanzo and Amegakure’s Anbu 404.

Hatake Style Swordsmanship

Kakashi inherits Hatake Sakumo’s White Fang sword and swordsmanship.

  • Combines Hatake swordsmanship with Lightning Spirit Wind Flash for rapid assassination-style combat 265.
  • Uses the White Fang to sever an enemy spy’s arm while protecting a civilian hostage 124.
  • Tunan’s genjutsu training teaches him that victory in swordsmanship depends on understanding an opponent rather than relying solely on technique 110.

Lightning Spirit Wind Flash

A nintaijutsu that cloaks Kakashi in lightning and dramatically increases his movement speed.

  • Requires exceptional dynamic vision; Kakashi’s Three-Tomoe Sharingan allows him to use it safely and effectively 265.
  • Enables him to cross a battlefield as a blur and rapidly eliminate multiple Iwagakure Jonin 265.
  • Supports his Raikiri and Double Lightning Shock charges 266.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • White Fang — Hatake Sakumo’s sword, later wielded by Kakashi in combat 109 124.
  • Special Flying Thunder God kunai — Given to Kakashi by Minato as a gift upon becoming a Jonin and leading the Kannabi Bridge mission 265.
  • Anbu mask — Worn during Anbu operations 356.

Relationships

  • Hatake Sakumo — Father and mentor. Sakumo’s death leaves Kakashi devastated; his will asks Kakashi to restore the Hatake family’s honor and treat Tunan as a lifelong companion 71.
  • Uchiha Tunan — Begins as a rival and sparring partner, then becomes a close but deeply complicated comrade. Tunan trains, manipulates, and cultivates Kakashi’s potential, while Kakashi later hides Obito’s identity from him 8 110 201 356 392.
  • Namikaze Minato — Jonin instructor and mentor of Team Nine. Minato repeatedly entrusts Kakashi with major missions, rescues him from Tunan’s torture, and supports his development 39 267 282.
  • Uchiha Obito — Teammate and rival. Kakashi saves Obito in battle, believes him dead, then discovers he survived after Rin’s death; their bond becomes strained by Obito’s hatred and betrayal 264 284 285.
  • Nohara Rin — Teammate whom Kakashi vows to protect. He kills her with Raikiri to prevent the Three-Tails from reaching Konoha, an act that awakens his Mangekyo Sharingan 282 284.
  • Hatake Yanbu and Hatake Yi — Younger Hatake clan members under Kakashi’s care. He brings them into the Hatake household and later oversees their upbringing and education 312 364.
  • Hatake Kabuto — Fellow Hatake clan member who expresses concern for Kakashi’s safety and the family’s future 364.
