Background / History

Kakashi first appears as a gifted but dismissive Academy student who bullies Uchiha Tunan over Tunan’s parents remaining in the village rather than going to the battlefield 1. He initially considers Tunan, even after the latter awakens the Sharingan, to be far beneath him in practical combat. Tunan’s unexpectedly advanced Clone, Substitution, Transformation, and Fire Style techniques force Kakashi to recognize his potential during their sparring match 6.

Tunan begins visiting the Hatake residence to train with Kakashi. Although Kakashi maintains a lazy, indifferent front, he accepts the arrangement, and the two spar daily in the Hatake family’s training yard. At this stage, Kakashi already knows several ninjutsu and possesses greater stamina than Tunan 8. The partnership continues through their early graduation and assignment to Team Nine under Namikaze Minato 32 39.

Hatake Sakumo’s death destabilizes Kakashi. He initially directs his grief toward Tunan, who killed Sakumo in a duel, but Sakumo’s will identifies Tunan as the man who helped him die honorably and asks Kakashi to regard him as a lifelong companion 71. Kakashi later confronts Tunan again over the duel, only for Tunan to trap him in repeated genjutsu battles designed to expose flaws in Kakashi’s swordsmanship and training approach 109 110.

During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi develops rapidly. He receives a Seed of the Way Curse Mark from Tunan to unlock his potential, later awakening a Sharingan and then a Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Kakashi often presents himself as lazy, nonchalant, and emotionally reserved. As a child, he does not readily show praise or concern, though his willingness to train daily with Tunan reveals that he values a capable companion 8 14 16.

He is intensely driven to surpass his father and become a powerful ninja. This determination leads him to create Raikiri and repeatedly push his body beyond its limits, even when the technique is incomplete and harmful to use 39 61.

Kakashi is deeply protective of comrades. He rescues Obito during the Mount Kikyo battle, refuses to abandon Rin after learning she has become the Three-Tails’ jinchuriki, and ultimately bears the burden of killing her to protect Konoha 264 282 284. The losses of Sakumo, Rin, and Obito leave him guilt-ridden, but he resolves to continue protecting the village and those under his care 312 356.

His sternness is particularly visible as Hatake clan head. Yanbu and Yi fear his authority, yet he ensures their education and safety and leaves for duty only after ordering them to remain home 364.
