Doctrine and Recruitment

The sect was founded to “elucidate the Great Dao,” following Heaven's will and responding to humanity. Its teachings claim the orthodox inheritances of Dao Ancestor Hongjun and Pangu. 24

History

Founding at Mount Kunlun

Yuanshi established the Chan Sect after invoking the Heavenly Dao, declaring himself one of the three divisions of Pangu's Nascent Soul. He attained sainthood as Primordial Heavenly Venerate and used the Pangu Banner to suppress the sect's fortune. 24

The announcement drew innumerable cultivators to Mount Kunlun. After a thousand-year journey undertaken by seekers from across the Primordial Desolation, only a fraction survived to reach the mountain. Primordial Heavenly Venerate established an exacting trial formation to select disciples. 25

Early notable disciples included Old Immortal Nanji and Yunzhongzi, both already renowned for their fortune and Dao methods before entering the sect. 28

Rivalry with the Intercepting Sect

The Exposition Sect and Intercepting Sect diverged immediately over recruitment and doctrine. Primordial Heavenly Venerate objected to Tongtian's broad acceptance of any being able to pass a test of Dao-seeking sincerity. 25

At the Dao Discussion Conference, the Intercepting Sect won eight matches against the Exposition Sect. Its disciples' greater magical power and combat-oriented training proved decisive against the Exposition Sect's focus on cultivation advancement. 36

The rivalry hardened into repeated disputes across the Primordial Desolation. Primordial Heavenly Venerate later sought Dao Ancestor Hongjun's judgment on the two sects' orthodox standing, but Tongtian publicly declared the Intercepting Sect to be Orthodox Xuanmen first. 63

Investiture of the Gods

Before the Investiture of the Gods tribulation, the sect's Twelve Golden Immortals planned to complete their own killing tribulation at the expense of Intercepting Sect disciples. 85

• True Person Taiyi engineered Niangniang Shi Ji's death, placing the first Intercepting Sect member on the Investiture list. 99

Following the calamity, several former sect members established dojos in the East Victory Divine Continent, while Buddhist influence infiltrated and divided elements of the sect. 120 132

The sect's peak Grand Unity Golden Immortals, including Guangchengzi and True Person Jade Cauldron, withdrew into seclusion to pursue enlightenment and vengeance against the defectors. 132

Guangchengzi and other experts later re-emerged to establish sects across the East Victory Divine Continent, contesting influence with the Human Teachings and Intercepting Sect. 133

Yunzhongzi eventually served as the sect's leader and sought an alliance with the Human Teachings and Chaos Dao Lord against the resurrected Chi You. 275

Later Era

During the conflict with the Witch-Buddha-Devil Alliance, seven Exposition Sect experts opened an escape route for the Human Teachings from the Grand Purity Sacred Realm, accepting the risk of retaliation to preserve their fellow Xuanmen sect. 391

After the Saints' return, Guangchengzi, True Person Jade Cauldron, and Yunzhongzi led the sect's re-establishment in the Earth Immortal Realm. Its activities in the East Victory Divine Continent and South Continent were heavily restricted by Intercepting Sect control of prime territory. 446
