Background / History

Tongtian first appears with Taishang Laojun and Yuanshi Tianzun as the Three Pure Ones. Amused that the Mystic Immortal Li Yunjing recognizes them, he accepts Li as his fifth true disciple, Chaos Child; he also accepts the Golden-Winged Roc into the sect as Winged Immortal. 4

At Mount Kunlun, Tongtian teaches his disciples the Supreme Clarity Great Dao, adapting principles he learned from Dao Ancestor Hongjun into his own doctrine. His original direct disciples are Daoist Duobao, Holy Mother Jinling, Holy Mother Guiling, and Holy Mother Wudang. 6

After receiving the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation from Hongjun, Tongtian establishes the Jie Sect and becomes a Saint. His doctrine welcomes all beings with the sincerity to seek the Dao, contrasting with Yuanshi Tianzun's strict selection of disciples by merit and roots. 11 24 25

Tongtian later moves the Jie Sect from Mount Kunlun to Golden Ao Island, establishing Biyou Palace as its headquarters. His teachings increasingly emphasize combat techniques and formations, partly to preserve the sect's advantage over the Chan Sect. 39

During the Investiture of the Gods conflict, Tongtian initially treats the deaths of disciples who descend the mountain without permission as consequences of their own choices. Guangchengzi's provocations and the deaths of Intercepting Sect disciples eventually drive him to deploy the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation at Jiepai Pass. 120 123

Four Saints—Taishang Laojun, Yuanshi Tianzun, Jieyin, and Zhunti—break the formation and overwhelm Tongtian. He later raises the Myriad Immortals Formation and creates the Six Souls Banner, but the calamity devastates his sect and permanently fractures the fellowship of the Three Pure Ones. 125 126 128

Following the calamity, Tongtian entrusts Li Yunjing with the position of Vice Sect Master and personally explains the Saint realm and the Pangu Great Dao to him. He later expresses regret over the disciples who were bound to the Investiture of the Gods, acknowledging that his own competitiveness contributed to their suffering. 130 286

Personality

Tongtian is proud, competitive, and intensely protective of the honor of his sect. His conflict with Yuanshi Tianzun begins as a doctrinal disagreement but deepens through repeated disputes over their disciples and the status of their respective sects. 25 63

As a teacher, he is notably permissive. He imposes few strict rules beyond fellowship among disciples and loyalty to their master, a leniency that allows many later disciples to become complacent in their cultivation. 53

His confidence can harden into stubbornness. He refuses to withdraw the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation even when opposed by his brothers and the Western Saints, leading to his defeat during the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. 125

Despite this, Tongtian sincerely values his disciples. He praises Li Yunjing's achievements, intervenes personally when Zhunti attempts to kill him, and later shows remorse for the suffering endured by disciples named on the Investiture of the Gods. 79 224 286
