Background / History

Hongjun became the first Saint of the Primordial Desolation and founded Xuanmen. From Zixiao Palace, he expounded the Primordial Great Dao to three thousand great divine-ability users. At the conclusion of his third lecture, he established Taiqing Laozi, Yuqing Primordial, Shangqing Tongtian, Nuwa, Jieyin, and Zhunti as the six Saints, distributed his remaining spirit treasures, and merged with the Dao. 10

After merging with the Dao, Hongjun exercised overwhelming Heavenly Dao authority. During a Witch–Demon battlefield clash, he swept tens of millions of combatants back to their respective territories with a single gesture, demonstrating power beyond the reach of ordinary cultivators. 14

Hongjun continued to intervene at major turning points in the Primordial World. He reforged the shattered Primordial Desolation and created the Earth Immortal Realm during the Investiture of the Gods calamity, then reprimanded the six Saints for the destruction caused by their conflict. 129 He later sealed the newly born Demon Realm, declaring that it would open in the following kalpa for Xuanmen disciples to seek opportunities. 186

His merger with the Heavenly Dao was not peaceful. Hongjun and the Heavenly Dao mutually devoured one another, each resisting complete assimilation; by the time Shen Ni escaped, Hongjun had consumed nearly sixty percent of its power. His repeated efforts to draw heavily on Heavenly Dao authority also damaged the Primordial World, draining spiritual energy and causing desertification across the Four Realms. 437 436

As the Saints and Hunyuans became less willing to obey him, Hongjun increasingly relied on coercion, bargains, and schemes. He offered rewards to secure aid against Shen Ni, attempted to divide Shen Ni and Yang Mei, and later refined Saint Annihilation Pills to control powerful Saints and Hunyuans. 438 441 501

Hongjun’s final attempt to restore unilateral rule ended in open rebellion. After threatening major figures with the Saint Annihilation Pills, he was trapped within the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation and fought the united Saints and Hunyuans. His Good Corpse was destroyed, the Jade Plate of Creation was shattered, and he was ultimately driven from the Primordial World after failing to reclaim Zixiao Palace. 502 503 505

Appearance

Hongjun is usually depicted as an elderly Daoist with white hair and beard, an ancient yet kindly face, and the composed bearing of a supreme immortal. He commonly appears seated upon the Dao platform of Zixiao Palace. 10 83 501

Hongjun initially presents himself as detached, serene, and impartial: he lectures on the Dao, appoints Saints, distributes treasures, and speaks with an ethereal calm after merging with the Dao. 10 62

Beneath that restraint, he is intensely ambitious. His ultimate objective is to devour or fully control the Heavenly Dao, surpass Pangu, enter the Heavenly Dao Realm, and become supreme across the myriad heavens. 437 501 He is also calculating and politically adept, attempting to manipulate Yang Mei and Shen Ni into conflict while preserving his own advantage. 441

As resistance grows, Hongjun becomes openly ruthless. He imprisons or puppeteers Demon Ancestor Rahu, prepares pills to enslave Saints and Hunyuans, and is willing to destroy the Primordial World rather than allow his enemies to inherit its benefits. 451 501 504
