Background / History

Cassif was a registered disciple of Dreamy Sea, one of the Five Great Holy Lands. He colluded with Venerable Wutian, defected to the Dark Faction, and betrayed his master, Nan Wuya. Lanling helped lure Nan Wuya into a trap; Nan Wuya was severely injured and imprisoned beneath Lanling's manor while Wutian sought the Nine Nether Chapters from him. 32 34

His manor concealed Dark Magic restrictions, a secret underground chamber, and a collection of puppet-like men whose souls had been extracted. Nan Wuya remained chained in the underground chamber until Qi Bei infiltrated the estate and the conflict with Wutian ended in Wutian's death. 31 32 33 34

After discovering Wutian's corpse and the breached restrictions, Lanling concluded that an unknown Dark Faction expert had entered his estate. He concealed the incident from his household and sought Elder Weir's assistance in examining the Giant Sun Elephants that had rampaged through the manor. 35

Qi Bei later summoned Lanling to Lanhe Town under the guise of the same mysterious expert. Terrified by Qi Bei's dragon energy, Lanling submitted without resistance and allowed Qi Bei to place a controlling trace of inner force in his Heavenly Aperture. 45 47

Appearance

Marquis Lanling presents himself in an overtly ornate, effeminate style that contrasts with his formidable Battle Qi.

  • Often wears a pink robe and heavy makeup. 24
  • Has a delicate, “woman-like” hand and carefully styled hair. 25 35
  • His eyes turn red when enraged. 25
  • Can move rapidly enough to appear as a blur or shadow. 25

Personality

Lanling is arrogant and socially protected by his rank, openly provoking people beneath his status and disregarding the Nord Family's reputation. He is known across the Golden Leaf Dynasty for preferring men and takes a predatory interest in Vajra. 24 25

Behind his public confidence, he is pragmatic and fearful when facing overwhelming power. After Wutian's death, he immediately suppressed his panic, concealed the evidence, and sought to preserve his position. When confronted by Qi Bei's disguised identity, he readily offered himself as a servant rather than risk death. 35 47

Abilities & Skills

Battle Qi Cultivation

Lanling is described as a peak King Grade warrior, placing him far beyond Qi Bei's strength during their first confrontation. 25

  • Evaded Vajra's punch through high-speed movement. 25
  • Pressured Qi Bei with killing intent intense enough to leave him physically shaken. 25
  • Condenses Battle Qi in his hand before handling potentially dangerous objects. 45
  • Was still vulnerable to Qi Bei's concealed Black Sword strike, which cut a strand of his hair. 25

Dark Faction Connections

Lanling was bound to Venerable Wutian through a Netherworld Mark and remained connected to a network of Dark Faction-controlled figures. 34 35 47

  • Helped imprison his former master, Nan Wuya, beneath his estate. 32 34
  • Maintained a manor protected by a triple-layer Invisible Dark Soul Seal that used thirty souls and ten high-grade magic crystals. 31
  • Identified Elder Weir, the Fox Family patriarch, and the deputy commander of the Imperial Palace Guards as people controlled by Wutian. 47
  • Does not know the full scope of Wutian's plans or all of his subordinates. 47

Qi Bei's Heavenly Aperture Control

Qi Bei implanted a trace of dragon energy into Lanling's Heavenly Aperture while posing as a mysterious senior. 47

  • The energy causes severe headaches when Qi Bei activates it. 47
  • Lanling believes it to be an inescapable method of control and addresses Qi Bei as “Master.” 47 48
  • He was ordered to investigate the necromancer connected to Princess Mingyue's kidnapping and place an informant near Emperor Hanmos. 48

Estate and Resources

  • Marquis Lanling's manor — A heavily guarded residence containing hidden Dark Magic protections and an underground secret chamber. 31 32
  • Soul puppets — Puppet-like men kept in a concealed cabinet; their souls had been extracted. 27 32
  • Giant Sun Elephants — Two fourth-tier magical beasts sent to him by Qi Bei as an insult; they later rampaged through his estate after being drugged. 25 27 34 35

Relationships

  • Qi Bei Nord — Initially targeted Qi Bei and Vajra on Fifth Avenue, apparently in connection with his friendship with the Fox Family patriarch; later becomes Qi Bei's secretly controlled subordinate. 24 25 47 48
  • Vajra — Lanling develops an unwanted interest in Vajra, prompting the conflict with Qi Bei. 24 25
  • Nan Wuya — His former master from Dreamy Sea; Lanling betrayed him, helped trap him, and imprisoned him beneath the manor. 32 34
  • Venerable Wutian — Dark Faction superior who controlled Lanling through a Netherworld Mark and used him to lure Nan Wuya. 34 35
  • Elder Weir — Fellow person marked and controlled by Wutian; Lanling calls upon him after Wutian's death to investigate the Giant Sun Elephants. 35
  • Patriarch Fox — Close friend whose connection gives Lanling a likely motive for confronting Qi Bei after Young Master Fox's humiliation. 24
  • Emperor Hanmos — A target of Qi Bei's intelligence-gathering order; Lanling is instructed to plant an informant at the Emperor's side. 48

Story Role / Major Arcs

Conflict with Qi Bei

Lanling confronts Qi Bei and Vajra on Fifth Avenue, dismissing Nord authority while trying to take Vajra. He attacks Qi Bei, but Qi Bei's surprise Black Sword strike cuts his hair. Lanling's attempt to retaliate with killing intent is interrupted by an unknown person's cold snort. 24 25

Qi Bei sends Lanling two Giant Sun Elephants in deliberate mockery. Lanling accepts them rather than destroy valuable fourth-tier magical beasts, refusing to let Qi Bei make him a laughingstock. 27

The Secret Manor

Qi Bei infiltrates Lanling's estate while the Giant Sun Elephants create a diversion. He discovers Dark Soul Seals, the hidden puppet collection, the underground chamber, and Nan Wuya's imprisonment. 31 32

The intrusion results in Wutian's death and Nan Wuya's release. Lanling finds the aftermath, fears the unknown intruder, and orders total secrecy within the manor. 34 35

Submission at Lanhe Town

After receiving Qi Bei's anonymous letter, Lanling travels to Lanhe Town seeking the mysterious figure he believes killed Wutian. Qi Bei overwhelms him with dragon energy, implants control in his Heavenly Aperture, and extracts information on Wutian's network. 45 47

Qi Bei then leaves Lanling in the Imperial Capital as an intelligence asset, assigning him to investigate the necromancer and spy on Emperor Hanmos. 48
