Background / History
The Northern Garrison Command maintains a guarded compound in Black Rock City, marked by stern vermilion gates and staffed by saber-carrying Imperial Brocade Guards. Its low-ranking officers receive court-assigned housing within or behind the command grounds; Lin Feng and Lin Wan lived in such housing after Lin Feng was specially recruited following his adoptive parents' deaths. 3 4 11
Lin Feng returned to the command in the aftermath of an assassination attempt and killed gate guard Zhang Kuang, who had poisoned him on Wang Teng's orders. He then discovered that another gatekeeper bore the Fierce Tiger Gang's tattoo and was planted as an informant within the command. 3 4
The command's early response to the killings exposed internal factionalism. General Banner Chen Jiong attempted to arrest Lin Feng, while Battalion Commander Zhou Gang defended the killing of Zhang Kuang as self-defense and accused Chen of acting under outside orders. 5 Zhou later promoted Lin Feng to General Banner after he proved capable of killing a General Banner. 7
After Lin Feng's suppression of the Fierce Tiger Gang, Lord Qianhu exceptionally promoted him from General Banner to Battalion Commander. 11 14 The command's corruption became more overt when Qianhu Sun Dehai rejected Lin Feng's evidence of treason by the Zhao and Wang families and ordered his arrest. 20
Lin Feng killed Sun Dehai in the Imperial Prison after the Qianhu tried to bribe him into serving the Wang Family. Commander Shen Mo reviewed Lin Feng's letter and ledger documenting the Wang Family's contacts with the Black Wind Wolf Riders and secret provision of armor and supplies, declared Sun Dehai deserving of death, and promoted Lin Feng to Qianhu. 23
Under Shen Mo's authority, the Northern Garrison Command became central to the response against Black Wind Stronghold. Shen Mo ordered Lin Feng to obtain soldiers and supplies from the Wang Family, then dispatched the Third Banner—about one hundred armored command soldiers—to receive and support Qianhu Lin. 23 28
Following the destruction of Black Wind Stronghold, Shen Mo rewarded Lin Feng with access to the command's armory and granted him Earth-grade movement and saber techniques. 40 41 Shen Mo was later reassigned to the Prefecture, while Lin Feng was promoted to succeed him as Northern Commander of Black Rock City. 47

Operations and Authority
Law Enforcement and Internal Discipline
The command enforces Imperial Brocade Guard law, including capital punishment for harming fellow officers. Chen Jiong invoked this rule when seeking Lin Feng's arrest for killing Zhang Kuang and another guard. 5
Its authority is nevertheless vulnerable to personal influence and corruption. Zhang Kuang acted on Wang Teng's orders; a gate guard worked as a Fierce Tiger Gang informant; Sun Dehai protected the Wang Family; and Zhou Gang was later implicated in an attempted assassination of Lin Feng. 3 4 20
Raids and Seizures
Under Lin Feng, Imperial Brocade Guards surrounded the Fierce Tiger Gang headquarters, seized its property, correspondence, ledgers, and valuables, and killed armed resisters. A detachment remained behind to guard the site while the remainder escorted the confiscated property back to the Northern Garrison Command. 7 11
The command also held evidence relating to the Wang Family's alleged treason, including secret correspondence with the Black Wind Wolf Riders and records of armor and provisions supplied to them. Shen Mo judged the evidence genuine but stated that action against the family required authorization from the capital or central authorities. 23
Bandit Suppression
Black Wind Stronghold's siege of Black Rock City prevented the command from sending its evidence to the capital. Shen Mo therefore tasked Lin Feng with lifting the siege and required the Wang Family to contribute five thousand soldiers, provisions, and military supplies. 23
The Third Banner later assembled under Lin Feng's command alongside private troops provided by local aristocratic families. When the Imperial Inspector attempted to have Lin arrested, the Northern Garrison Command soldiers immediately formed a defensive saber formation around their Qianhu, demonstrating that they recognized Lin Feng's authority over the Inspector's orders. 28
After Lin Feng cleared Black Wind Stronghold and executed Cao Meng, command soldiers returned with him to Black Rock City and the command yamen, where the result of the operation was formally reported to Shen Mo. 37 38
