Ada Wong didn't entirely believe Green Arrow Duck's story. "Can I see the computer? Can I use the keyboard now?"
Retracting the cable connecting the SB interface, Green Arrow Duck made way, gesturing for Ada Wong to begin operating the computer. The lab's computers didn't use IS systems, but rather a desktop version of LI, and it was a system designed and integrated in-house by Umbrella Corporation. It wasn't the more common RE_, SSE, or similar systems found outside.
However, the advantage of a desktop system over a text-based system is that it's easy to learn. Most operations can be completed with just a mouse. Therefore, Ada Wong encountered no difficulty in searching the files.
Alice, who knew the objective from the beginning, approached and asked, "Didn't you find anything on the computers here either?"
Green Arrow Duck patiently explained, "Although this computer belongs to the lab's local area network, rather than the administrative computer previously found on the office floor, I still couldn't find any valuable research data among the network nodes I could scan."
"I further examined the login files and discovered that the computers and files in these labs were all centralized on a host located at a private intranet IP address."
"However, this host is currently offline. I've tried everything but haven't received a response, and I can't use the wake-up call function, so it's impossible for me to hack into it. I speculate that there are only two possibilities that could cause this."
"One possibility is that the network connection of this host has been physically disconnected. Another possibility is that the computer has been damaged, or that the plug is not plugged in, or something more extreme. Of course, I would never remotely hack into this host."
Upon hearing the explanation of the Duck Plushie, Alice lowered her head and remained silent, lost in thought.
Have you considered any possibilities?
Alice looked up, a hint of hesitation on her face. "The last time I went in with Umbrella's security forces, their technicians shut down the Artificial Intelligence controlling the entire base. I'm wondering if it's related to this."
Recalling the movie's plot, Green Arrow Duck nodded. "The hardware requirements for Artificial Intelligence are quite high. What If...? it's intentionally shut down, it's entirely possible that the entire server cluster will go offline." "Then do we have to turn it back on? That bitch is the murderer who killed everyone in this base; many people could have survived."
The Green Arrow Duck pretended to be seriously evaluating the situation, but it already had a decision in mind. "It seems that if we want more information, we'll have to restart that Artificial Intelligence. But we can't be sure of the details without seeing it for ourselves."
"Aren't you afraid of being locked up in the Hive Base?"
"Since we were able to physically shut it down twice, I believe we can do it a third time too. What If...? that doesn't work, we'll just blow up the server room and destroy it completely."
Alice shrugged. "Okay, I don't really know much about that. Good that you have an idea. Shall we go over now?" She asked, seeing Ada Wong still buried in her computer screen, even though she really wanted to leave her temporary companion behind.
Upon hearing this, Ada Wong immediately stood up. "Let's go. We can't find any important information. But according to the lab's inventory records, there should be the pathogen and Antiviral Serum here."
With a look of disgust, Alice reluctantly said, "It was taken out by a corporate spy, and the item is no longer here. We did manage to retrieve it the last time we went in, but I don't know who it's in now."
"Okay, I guessed so." Ada Wong, having given up on searching the laboratory, put her Trench Coat back on and adjusted the weapons and equipment stored inside.
The group set off again, entering a vertical elevator that also served as a control room, and descended deeper. When they reached the bottom, Alice's lingering fear made the others hesitate and pull back from their feet as they approached a passageway.
"Is something wrong here?" Jill Valentian asked, glancing warily around.
Pointing to the only passage directly ahead, he said, "This passage contains high-energy laser beams. The last time I entered, they killed many members of Umbrella Corporation's security forces. It's the last line of defense before the Artificial Intelligence mainframe."
Upon hearing this, Jill Valentian asked worriedly, "Is this passage still usable?" "It's under Artificial Intelligence control. I don't know what it will do after we wake that bitch up. Maybe it will take care of us all while we're gone."
Although it was unclear whether the laser beam from this tunnel could cut through metal armor, Green Arrow Duck didn't want to test such a thing in combat. He stepped forward directly. "If you're worried about that, it's not difficult to solve."
The other three women all looked at the Duck Plushie, waiting to hear his insightful opinion.
Without a word, Green Arrow Duck took two sticky bombs from its Duck Butt and stuck them to the metal door at the entrance. The others, with their sharp eyesight, immediately hid behind the control panel for cover.
With two muffled explosions, the rickety iron door was ripped off by Green Arrow Duck and held in his hand. Then, Duck Butt opened two more missile bay doors, unleashing another salvo of Multi-Directional Combat Rounds! The inner walls of the laser tunnel were blown to smithereens.
This was also the last salvo of the air-to-air missiles, although they hadn't run out of ammunition yet, with five rounds remaining. The only way to use another salvo would be after leaving the Hive Base and resupplying.
Amidst the smoke and dust, Green Arrow Duck used the large iron gate he had just dismantled as a shovel to enter the smoke-filled passage and destroy the still-intact laser heads that were visible.
The entire dismantling process took only a few minutes, leaving the laser channel completely destroyed.
After emerging, Green Arrow Duck waited for the smoke and dust in the tunnel to settle, explaining, "What If...? it's a one-time trap, it's useless once triggered. What If...? it's a permanent, fixed trap, then you just need to dismantle it. Unless it has a self-repairing function."
Alice witnessed the entire process, was dumbfounded. Only when the smoke and dust in the passage gradually settled, revealing its dilapidated state, did she look at the other person with a complicated expression.
"Okay, I really didn't expect that. But who would carry heavy firepower and use themselves as a demolition squad?"
"I learned this from a friend's advice: when you have the ability, don't worry about whether the costs will exceed your budget. Ensuring personnel safety is the most important thing; that's the responsible approach. I've also said that if I bring you down, I can guarantee you'll get out." This "killing a chicken with a dragon-slaying sword" analogy comes from my long-lost friend Jack Reacher. I wonder if he's retired from the military yet? But given his lone wolf personality, it's best not to contact him unless absolutely necessary. He's not the kind of friend you can call out for a F.R.I.D.A.Y. night beer party.
