Failed Infiltration
Barbara picked up the cute tote bag in her hand and said, "Could you open the door for me? I want to leave it in his room as a surprise."
"This..." Old Gary hesitated.
Barbara pleaded, "Please."
Old Gary lowered his voice and said mysteriously, "You should know, he keeps a cat in his house."
"I know. A Tabby Cat named Kitty. You wouldn't say this little kitten is mischievous and will mess up all the surprises I put in the house, would you? I want to see Kitty and say hello to her too."
Old Gary's expression was strange. He looked Barbara up and down for a while before saying, as if giving up, "Forget it, no matter how I try to persuade you, you probably won't listen. I'll open the door for you so you can peek at Kitty, and then you can decide for yourself."
Barbara was puzzled by old Gary's actions, but she was still pleased that her plan had succeeded. As long as she got into the room and installed a few listening devices, Nick Fury would be satisfied.
Although the older man dressed in a feminine manner was a relative he had casually met, it must be said that old Gary was a very nice person.
The landlord went into his apartment, took out a set of keys, and said to Barbara, "Come with me." The two walked up the stairs together.
Unlike most apartments in non-affluent areas, where stairwells and hallways are often dirty and messy.
The apartment building that old Gary manages has tenants whom he personally selects, and everyone cooperates in maintaining the cleanliness of the common areas. As a result, the environment is much cleaner.
Henry's rented room was on the third floor, in a corner room at the very end of the corridor. A wooden sign was nailed to the door, with a hand-drawn cute cat standing up like a bear, making a threatening gesture and expression.
The wooden sign also reads "Bad Meow Inside," which doesn't seem threatening at all.
However, old Gary didn't just open the door and walk in casually. Instead, he pressed his ear to the door, listened for a while, and then nervously inserted the key into the lock and gently turned it open.
Then he turned the doorknob, opened it a crack, and peeked inside. Old Gary made sure to check the angle of view several times.
But he didn't see the "cat" he had imagined, so he pushed the door open a little more.
Barbara, standing behind him, couldn't stand his effeminate manner. Old Gary, dressed in a coquettish, womanly style, was even more fussy and nagging than she, a real woman, could be.
So Barbara ignored everything and pushed the door open!
The yellow-and-black-striped "cat" that Old Gary had been searching for was sitting not far from the door, its back to the outside. Its size was comparable to a small single sofa, and under its large paws was the suppressed core robot BB.
It was just because of the angle that I couldn't see it.
The sound of the door opening made Kitty turn her head, her large, bell-like eyes meeting the two people standing in the doorway. She let out a tiger's roar, then turned and charged towards the door!
New friend.
Old Gary scrambled backward, until he bumped into the corridor wall and couldn't escape any longer. He stared in horror at Kitty, who was about to rush out.
Barbara, true to her agent skills, remembered to close the door despite the chaotic scene and gripped the handle tightly. She completely forgot that the people inside weren't human and wouldn't turn the handle to open the door themselves. This was a mistake born of haste.
They thought the matter was over and that what they saw inside the room was just a dream. But the powerful pounce from behind the door made their hearts feel as if they were about to burst out of their chests.
Barbara could even faintly hear the roar of a tiger behind the door. Terrified, she didn't dare hide behind the door and instead went to the other side of the corridor to sit with old Gary, who was burying his head in his hands like an ostrich.
"That's Kitty?"
"Yes..."
"A tabby Tabby Cat?"
"Yes."
"A cat that weighs five or six hundred pounds? Are you serious!" Barbara asked, raising her voice.
"No! I absolutely refuse to believe that my tenant is keeping a Tiger!" Old Gary was indulging in self-hypnosis, trying to escape reality.
Barbara was about to say something when another heavy slam came from the door of Henry's rented apartment! Startled, the two women, seemingly possessed by some inexplicable strength, turned and ran frantically downstairs. They couldn't stay in that corridor any longer.
Even after leaving the apartment building, both of them were panting and leaning against the railing. Although Barbara Morse would later become an excellent agent, at that moment she was just a college student and hadn't experienced many life-or-death situations.
It's fair to say that the eye contact Barbara just had with Kitty was the first time in Barbara life that she felt she might be dead.
Seeing her equally shaken and pale-faced landlord, Barbara asked, "Gary, can you keep pets in your apartment?"
Old Gary said with a mournful face, "Actually, it's forbidden, but as long as it doesn't cause trouble for others, it can be lenient. But now I dare not say it's forbidden to keep..." His legs were still trembling, and he could barely stand.
"So now you know why I had you hand over the things to me, and then I passed them on to Henry," old Gary said, forcing a very unpleasant smile.
"I understand..." Barbara was panicking. Damn it! She couldn't beat this rival!
I don't even have the courage to confront it. It's obvious that I'll be the one to end up in pieces.
"So, Henry keeps a Tiger in his apartment?" Barbara asked.
Old Gary said, "No, I heard it's a male."
"A male Tiger? Named Kitty?" Barbara asked in surprise.
"Call it whatever you want, Washington or Bush, Victoria or Joan of Arc. I don't think it matters."
"That's true." Barbara looked at the cute tote bag she was carrying, thankful she hadn't left it in the house. She handed it to old Gary and said, "Then please give this gift to Henry. I have to catch my flight."
Forcing himself to stay alert, old Gary took the bag and said, "It's a pity you couldn't give it to him yourself, otherwise he could have taken you to the airport."
"Yes, what a pity," Barbara said insincerely. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself and then said, "I have to go, Gary."
"Okay, take care. Be careful on the road."
"Goodbye."
Barbara, who had left alone, went out onto the street to hail a taxi to the airport. But while waiting for a taxi, she first used her cell phone to call Nick Fury.
As soon as the call connected, Barbara said, "The mission failed."
The voice on the phone said, "Couldn't you get the landlord to open the door?"
"No, the target kept a Tiger in the house. I didn't dare go in."
"... According to the information, the target only owns one Tabby Cat named ' Kitty '."
"It's Kitty. Fuck the Tabby Cat, it's a Tiger. A five or six hundred-pound behemoth, I'm not even enough for one of its meals."
Nick Fury really wanted to swear, but he held back. Who in their right mind would keep Tiger as a pet?
Oh, no, that guy's Mutants, bullets can't damage him. So he's capable of Tiger, if he can afford it...
With no other option, Nick Fury could only manage to squeeze out, "Okay."
