Background & History

The Wei Dao Si is a martial-artist organization independent from secular dynasties. Its members operate in every country, and its influence can surpass that of imperial authorities; secular governments consequently grant its personnel special privileges and free passage. 2

The organization has endured for more than three hundred years. Its core purpose is to protect ordinary people from demons, monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural threats, though its branches also handle crimes involving martial artists. 2 9 48

The Wei Dao Si was established to oppose the Demonic Ancient Path, an ancient alliance of demons, spirits, heretical martial artists, and demonic cultivators. Despite centuries of conflict, the organization has not eradicated the Ancient Path. 16 42

The Wei Dao Si can intervene when martial artists threaten public order, even in matters otherwise handled by secular forces. During the Black Wind Stronghold campaign, Xia Qi'an invoked this authority against the stronghold's martial-artist leaders. 12

Its members are officially recognized by secular dynasties and may receive privileges unavailable to ordinary citizens, including unrestricted entry into Jinling City during a refugee lockdown. 2 9

Local branches may resemble government yamen and can be supplied with government personnel for routine administration. In Jinling, a government-appointed chief clerk handled minor affairs, while internal Wei Dao Si personnel dealt with demon- and monster-related matters. 2

Operations

Demon and Monster Suppression

The Wei Dao Si investigates and eliminates supernatural threats, including ghosts, blood corpses, fox spirits, and demonic beasts. Its operating rules permit the killing of mortals whose supernatural bewitchment cannot be broken. 16 40

• Su Mu's death and resurrection — Wei Dao Si intelligence agent Su Mu died while investigating a strange incident. He later returned as a Blood Corpse connected to the Demonic Ancient Path and was destroyed by Hound Guards Jiang Feng and Lin Beihai with Xia Qi'an's assistance. 1 16
• Tiger Demon operation — Xia Qi'an, Su Changqing, and Bata killed a powerful Tiger Demon, then faced a jurisdictional dispute with Xiaoxiang Prefecture personnel over its remains and collection. 31 33 34
• Fox Spirit case — A Snake Guard investigation sent Xia Qi'an to villages afflicted by disappearances. He and Bata pursued a fox spirit that had bewitched villagers and drained their vital essence. 38 39 40

Intelligence and Investigation

Snake Guards gather intelligence, conduct covert surveillance, and use specialized methods involving poison, medicine, gu, hidden weapons, and business. 5 23

The organization tracks the Demonic Ancient Path but cautions lower-level members against confronting its experts directly; confirmed threats are to be reported so headquarters can deploy stronger personnel. 42

County Expansion

The establishment of Executive Officer posts reoriented Wei Dao Si deployment toward county-level coverage. Each Executive is required to lead subordinate Hound Guards in the counties under their jurisdiction, addressing the former concentration of personnel in major cities. 48

Xia Qi'an was assigned to establish and lead the Lishan County branch, located opposite the county yamen. He recruited martial artists to improve local protection against demons and monsters. 48 50

Jinling Branch Events

• Su Mu's final intelligence — After Su Mu died in the wilderness, Xia Qi'an delivered his tokens and letter to Jinling's Wei Dao Si, bringing him into contact with Snake Guard commander Chu Shiqing. 1 3
• Xia Qi'an's recruitment — Chu Shiqing initially permitted Xia Qi'an to become a reserve member if he reached the Blood Refining Realm. Following an assessment, training camp, and tournament victory, Xia became a formal member. 3 5 8
