History
Under Yahiko, Akatsuki sought to preserve peace and was originally friendly toward Konoha. A plot orchestrated by Danzō brought it into conflict with Hanzō of Amegakure. After Yahiko’s death, Nagato took control, and Akatsuki became a bounty organization willing to accept war commissions 207. Obito later admitted that he had orchestrated Yahiko’s death to keep the organization from straying from its mission 1094.
Akatsuki recruited powerful rogue ninja and generally operated in two-person teams. Its public leader was Pain, while Obito and Zetsu worked behind the scenes. Obito’s existence was concealed even from many members 161 303 322 331. The organization developed two internal factions: members recruited by Nagato and Konan, and members recruited by Obito. Pressure from the God Organization helped keep the factions cooperating for a time 680 1060.

Methods and Capabilities
Intelligence and Field Operations
- Members used black-market contacts for food, lodging, and intelligence. This reliance exposed information about them when Konoha swept up black-market personnel 211.
- Akatsuki normally deployed members alone or in pairs; seeing several apparent God Organization members together alarmed Obito and Zetsu because it broke the pattern they knew 161 692.
- Pain’s Rain Tiger at Will Technique and Zetsu’s numerous clones made an undetected assault on Akatsuki’s Land of Rain base difficult 331.
Tailed Beast Extraction
- Akatsuki pursued Jinchūriki and used the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and Phantom Dragon Nine Consort Seal to extract Tailed Beast chakra 507 1239.
- After Obito summoned the statue with Madara’s Rinnegan, eight Akatsuki members performed the seal together. Extracting chakra from the previous One-Tail and Two-Tails Jinchūriki opened two of the statue’s eyes 1239.
- Obito later became the Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki, but the Ten-Tails remained incomplete. Akatsuki sought the missing Tailed Beasts, particularly the Nine-Tails, to strengthen him 1258.
Large-Scale Warfare
- Akatsuki used thousands of White Zetsu clones and reincarnated shinobi in its war against the Five Great Shinobi Villages 1035 1273.
- Attacks on the five nations’ daimyō caused heavy casualties without killing the targets; Konoha interpreted them as a means of tying down village forces before a larger operation 1035.
Major Conflicts
- Setback against River Lord: Six members sent to capture a target failed, losing one member and suffering Orochimaru’s betrayal. Pain paired Sasori with Kakuzu and ordered at least two teams to assemble before pursuing further God Organization clues 161.
- Amegakure battle: Nagato fought the God Organization’s Yama. Obito and Zetsu’s arrival shifted the balance toward Akatsuki, but the organization ultimately retreated 357 360.
- Iwagakure assault: Akatsuki’s attack killed the Third Tsuchikage, took two Jinchūriki, and caused extensive shinobi losses 669.
- War against the villages: Akatsuki declared war on the Five Great Shinobi Villages. Its forces then lured the Allied Shinobi Forces into a trap while transferring tens of thousands of White Zetsu clones toward Konoha 1263 1273.
- After the Fourth Shinobi World War: Following Obito’s defeat and Nagato and Konan’s disappearance, Sasori remained with Akatsuki; Kakuzu and Hidan also returned under Obito. White Zetsu continued as a liaison and scout 1410 1411.
