Background / History

Samui first appears at a Kumogakure encampment with Mabui and Yugito. When Yugito leaves to join the battle without permission, Samui reassures Mabui that Yugito should be able to handle the opponents ahead 89. After the Cloud forces’ defeat, all three become prisoners in Konoha. Their chakra is sealed, and Samui and Mabui undergo interrogation before the group agrees to provide information about controlling tailed beasts 110.

Yugito proposes that Samui gain Shin’s trust so they can rescue the imprisoned Raikage. Samui doubts that they can escape by force and advises patience rather than pursuing Shin too openly 110 116. Shin subsequently offers her a position as his assistant. Although Yugito sees the offer as progress, Samui worries that access to Konoha’s affairs may mean Shin never intends to let her leave 124. She becomes his secretary, handling documents and official business 129 249.

Shin later permits Samui, Mabui, and Yugito to visit the Raikage. When he demands that Yugito die for Kumogakure and calls the women traitors, Samui defends her and leads them away. She comforts Yugito afterward, and the three resolve to live for themselves 147 149. Shin then gives Samui a prison key and a scroll that can remove the Raikage’s seal, telling her to pass them to Yugito 149 150. Samui and Mabui later find Yugito unconscious in the prison during the Raikage’s escape attempt 153.

Samui remains at Shin’s side as his government becomes an empire. After Yugito’s tailed beast is removed, Shin lifts the seals on all three women 274. Samui continues to manage his work and personal needs, and takes a leading role in the household she shares with Mabui and Yugito 323 358. She also helps newcomers such as Hancock and Kaguya find housing and learn what is expected of them 396 429.

Samui is tall and slender, with pale skin, short golden hair, and an aloof bearing 89.

• As secretary, she wears a white shirt, black pencil skirt, and fishnet stockings; later outfits include black business attire 129 398.

Personality

Samui is composed and pragmatic under pressure. In captivity, she recognizes the limits imposed by their seals and questions Yugito’s plan to manipulate Shin 110 116. She maintains a distant manner with strangers but becomes protective of Mabui and Yugito, confronting the Raikage when he turns on them 129 149.

Her relationship with Shin changes from an attempt to secure her future into a desire for his approval. She is hurt when she believes he regards her only as a useful amusement, yet remains attentive to his work and preferences 150 323. She can also be exacting with others: she reprimands Yugito for what she considers a lack of devotion and reacts sharply to Kaguya’s dismissive treatment of Shin 323 428 429.
