Background

Tsunade is the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju and a disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi. She is recognized as one of Konoha's Sannin and possesses medical ninjutsu regarded as unsurpassed within the ninja world. Her standing allows her to confront even the Fourth Hokage, Orochimaru, without restraint. 146 248

After returning to Konoha, Tsunade questions Orochimaru over whether he has harmed the village. Hiruzen subsequently shows her documents exposing Orochimaru's attacks on the Daimyo, murder of Danzō, and human experimentation. Disgusted by Konoha's corruption and Orochimaru's conduct, she destroys the First and Second Hokage's faces on the Hokage Rock. 146

Debt and Service to the Hokage

Tsunade accrues a gambling debt of fifty million ryō. Unable to raise the money through friends and colleagues, she considers fleeing Konoha but rejects the idea because of the damage it would do to her reputation and Shizune. 244 245

Hyūga Shin arrests creditor Otsuka Kōgorō on charges including tax fraud and extortion, and the Central Ministry of Justice confiscates Tsunade's IOU. However, her financial problems continue to affect Shizune's family and circle of friends. 245 246

When Tsunade asks Shin for a fifty-million-ryō loan, she is forced to admit that it is for gambling debts. Shin agrees to provide the money under the condition that she work as his personal assistant for eight days at five million ryō per day. 248

Her purported assistant duties are largely personal service: serving tea, cleaning, preparing food, and providing massages, while Samui handles official secretarial work. Tsunade initially considers the work beneath her status, but gradually adapts to the office routine. 249 253 254

Her gambling habit repeatedly conflicts with her pride. She is humiliated by having to admit the cause of her debt and seek Shin's help, yet she ultimately accepts difficult conditions to avoid dragging Shizune further into her problems. 244 248

Despite her resentment toward Shin and Konoha's leadership, Tsunade is deeply loyal to Jiraiya. She repeatedly petitions Shin for leniency after Jiraiya is branded a rogue ninja and later captured, refusing to abandon him even when doing so costs her dignity. 235 280 285 286
