Background / History

Kushina arrives in Konoha as a red-haired transfer student at the Ninja Academy. Confident and spirited, she declares that she will become the village's first female Hokage; Hyuga Ao is the only classmate to applaud her ambition. 4

She quickly becomes close with Ao and Namikaze Minato. Although she initially suspects they may be a couple because Minato shares his family’s ninjutsu materials with Ao, both deny it; Kushina remains eager to join their friendship. 6

Following the death of her grandmother, Mito Uzumaki, Kushina becomes the Nine-Tails' Jinchūriki. The loss leaves her grieving and frightened, but Ao and Minato support her return to the Academy. Kushina later begins studying the scroll Mito left behind, recalling Mito's belief that a Jinchūriki's heart must be filled with love. 11
