First Appearance Chapter 39

Background

The Senju clan had largely integrated into Konoha over generations, leaving Tsunade as the only person broadly regarded as a true member of the family. Though she does not use the Senju surname, she remains its most prominent living representative and the granddaughter of the First Hokage. 1 40

Tsunade left Konoha after losing Nawaki and Dan Katō during the wars. Their deaths left her with severe hemophobia, making her unable to reliably fight or perform surgery despite her exceptional medical talent. She travelled with Shizune, accumulated gambling debts, and avoided returning to village service. 42 160

Kanda Kyoichi encountered her in a casino while she was being pursued by debt collectors. She recognized his awakened Senju traits and considered him a distant relative, comparing his temperament and diligence to Tobirama Senju. 39 40

Kyoichi's letters and medical discussions drew Tsunade back toward Konoha. His suggestions for adapting to hemophobia—fighting without visual triggers, using genjutsu, and limiting the Living Slug's shared vision during treatment—gave her practical ways to function despite her trauma. 67 78

By the time she returned to Konoha, Tsunade had resumed medical work, begun research into psychological medicine, and gradually overcome the mental block that had kept her from surgery. 79 80 112

Appearance

Tsunade is a tall woman with golden hair, often seen in a green robe. 128 200

  • Known for immense physical strength; ordinary furniture and even buildings frequently fail to withstand her blows. 112 156
  • Her imposing presence and status are recognizable even outside Konoha. 410

Personality

Tsunade is blunt, forceful, and impatient with indecision. She openly criticizes Konoha's elders and Danzo when she believes their caution weakens the village, and she is willing to use her authority directly rather than seek approval. 74 75 216

Her temper and gambling habit contrast with a deeply protective nature. She worries intensely when Kyoichi takes unnecessary risks, supports her allies and students, and treats Konoha's long-term safety as a personal responsibility. 87 156 159

Although initially reluctant to become Hokage because of the losses associated with the title, she accepts the office to protect Kyoichi's reforms and guide Konoha's development. 201
